UAs, Barnacles & More Thread 5 - The Canonn

can't help but have it in the back of my mind.

Also they are very hard to spot above 2.5km, and that's maxed settings

Question. I've been doing canyon runs at about 200 -400m Do you see them as you approach, or do they spawn after your ship flies over a trigger perimeter? Wasn't sure if I needed to double back on the canyons I've flown, or if they'd be visible from that low height.

I haven't seen the barnacles yet. Flying around Maia A7, just because - it's green, misty, and has a few mis-colored canyons. And at 1.96g's, it makes me keep alert, unless I want to pancake.

Wait... they cause ship damage? Thanks! That may have been why my ship exploded on my first play through. I was just sitting waiting to finish a mission, and BOOM.

IIRC I may have had a UA on board... :p

Awwwww. :(

Meta-alloy deployed in space, I was really hoping to see the same/similar model you get when you pick it up, and in space for it to seem like a "baby UA".

Like it's leaves unfold or summut.

And it exploded with a standard canister pop.

Must say, I have no idea if the barnacle is a UA factory, gathers materials then "grows" them or whatever, but I love the idea of grown organic technology. And I love that Frontier is taking it in this direction, bring it on guys. :D

Also, with this technology, this to me does not seem like a Thargoid thing any more.

Theory time !

Barnacles are mining installations (the barnacle grows spikes around it with pods containing refined elements)

UAs are vessels from the mining installations to wherever the minerals must be delivered (stored in those cylindrical pods along the spine and the meta alloys is contained in the bulb)

The most interesting thing about the UAs for me is the size of their 'bubble'.

They surround a volume of a sphere 300ly across. This is half the diameter of the human bubble on it's longest axis. Since the UA shell is a perfect sphere, it's volume, while smaller, is comparable to the volume of the galactic human civilization!

What if an entire alien civilization warps in and enjoy their own bubble one day, with our helpless Obsidian Orbital smack in the center :D

Wow so 4 different barnacle sites found, two within close proximity to the crashed anaconda, one further away, all on the same planet, then the site on Merope 5c. This has turned into one epic day

Huh, really? I spent SO much time scouring those! Oh well, it's a shame they weren't found sooner but I'm glad they have been now :)

Other CMDRs are referencing the logo on the barnacles and making a connection with Barnard's Loop. It does look strikingly like it - I'm going to set out myself this evening towards it and see what's out there.

great my srv is stuck INSIDE the planet... whenever i log in off..

Load the non-Horizons version of Elite and it'll pop you out into orbit.

Well nothing renders beneath the surface at least...was half expecting it to be a buried vorlon ship when I clipped the srv debug camera through the soil. The humming and rumbling is really loud when you are inside the central structure btw. So if you want to get nice recordings use the debug cam.

I think it's almost time to make the UA # 6 thread.
Gotta be honest this is getting bloomin stupid.

It's got the the point where you cannot have a discussion any more.

How can anyone possibly engage in a thread that gets 5500 posts in 6 days??

Seriously?

Or we could just maybe get a UA subforum. Call it Elite Area 51 ;)

Really though, we need it, I love following this thread but this is pandemonium! UAs, barnacles, exploding SRVs, allegations of bugs, theories, etc etc etc. This thing is all over the place.

A commander claims to see "UFO's" flying over the barnacle (this is in solo). I believe they're just the particles emitted from the barnacle though...

Either you remove the station or it's WAR !

Sure, no worries, en route, gone in a day, you can keep the materials, bye !

I really have to say.

This is really LAME!

We were all searching for them for days. Hour after hour.
Now we finally found them and the game crashes all the time. Sometimes the barnacles are there, sometimes they aren't.

@Frontier:
Did you test this before? I know it's a lot of server load. But don't you do load testing? This was expectable....

I am now at exactly the same location were the first barnacle after merope5c was found. No barnacle for me here. Just a sentry with a beacon nearby...
Perhaps it turns into a barnacle in some hours... :( :( :(

ok so I uploaded my case with the unknown module damage near a barnacle now:

maybe it's just a bug, but I don't know :/

I'm leaning to the theory that these are some sort of semi organic mining station (Thargoid tech ?) and the UA's are "shipment " canisters - maybe going to Barnards loop ?
Be someone/thing there wondering who has been hijacking their meta-alloy shipments - lets blame the guys blockading Obsidian if any aliens come asking ;)
