Newcomer / Intro buying a fuel scoop

I have the starting Horizons ship, and want to buy a fuel scoop. Do I have to pick a currently installed system to get rid of before I can install it? I chose the shield generator, went to buy and equip, and saw the fuel scoop. But it looks like I would have to get rid of the shield generator first?

Any suggestions on what to get rid of if this is the case? Kinda want the shields...

You should give us a bit more info there. What ship are you flying, what internal compartments do you have installed... You can use the coriolis.io site to make your build and link it here. We can then advise the course of action or someone will build you an example of your Horizons ship.

Generally, though, I wouldn't recommend getting rid of the shields. Galaxy is dangerous and even if you wouldn't have encountered someone hostile, you will need shields for planetary landings because you WILL take damage upon landing. It's never completely smooth.
You can go for smaller one in one of your lower-class compartments, but DO keep one.
That said, you will also need the vehicle hangar (obviously) and some cargo rack for whatever you find on surface.

when you are installing a new module, you will get the money back for the one that was previously there, so don't be afraid to experiment.

If you are trying to equip a Sidewinder, you will have to make some sacrifices, but if you have at least a Hauler or Adder, you should have enough internal compartments for everything.

Yes, you only have so much internal compartment space. By default, if I recall, you have a shield, a cargo rack, and a Basic Discovery Scanner. You have to give one of those up to put in a fuel scoop, since the beginner ship, the Sidewinder, is small.

Deciding what to give up depends on what you want to do. If you want to explore the galaxy, then I would give up the cargo rack for the fuel scoop. If you want to run delivery missions or do some trading, then I would skip the fuel scoop as you'll be going from station to station. You just need to make sure you can make it there on a tank of fuel. If you want to do combat, you can get rid of both the cargo rack and the BDS.

The bright side is that you can sell whatever you buy back to the outfitter at 100% of the cost, so you can mix and match depending on what you want to play. If you decide to do something else, just swap out the components as you see fit.

best idea is to farm some money 1st then get something like the old cobra. then upgrade that instead of the side winder. just be sure to cover the insurance.

Thanks - I suppose I'd like to just "get started" and make some money for a better ship. I am leaning towards exploration, as the small capacity of the Sidewinder doesn't lend itself to hardcore trading.

problem with exploring is, to make money in proportion to the time spent you need an adv discovery scanner.. and those aren't cheap.

I started exploring immediately, and made my first 2 million with the Basic Discovery Scanner. The money really starts rolling in when you add the Detailed Surface Scanner. I found a 400,000 credit system during my first outing with the BDS+DSS. :D The Advanced Discovery Scanner just makes scanning systems go a bit faster. Honk up enough money to get an Adder, then get the fuel scoop.

Missions can be hard to decipher at first. The problem with missions is they usually attract extra hostility from NPCs. That's a rough way to start out, but YMMV.

you dont want to do the assasinate ones. (they will usually need you to have a fsd interdicter)
just delivery ones for now..

also if you want to kill things. fly to a nav beacon and target some one. wait till the box in the bottom left is fully populated. If it says "wanted" then you can kill them. if it says "clean" do not shoot them..

after you kill a few fly back to a station and go to contacts to claim your bounty money. the side winder is not the best ship to kill stuff in, but it is possible to do. you can get good money doing it. but just dont get carried away and remember to go collect your bounties form the outposts every so often.

but if you want to do exploring the above poster seems to think is viable.
Personally though i have never made more than 300k doing 600ly round trip journeys and thats with an adv discovery scanner.

Are you scanning all the higher value planets and stars individually with the DSS? My first two big expeditions out of the bubble I went out 250 ly for 1.4 million and out 650 Ly for 3.2 million (66 systems), average jump something like 15-20 Ly. The DSS can double the value of the best systems, IIRC - Earth-Likes, high value rings, etc. On shorter "day trips" before I got the A-rated FSD I was making 200k-800k BDS+DSS for a couple dozen systems, by which time I had developed a more efficient scanning method. System value on the edge of the bubble varies from about 2500 (one star) to 400,000 (a big system with an Earth-Like). Some people like it, and some people get bored wth it fast.

People who prefer to trade rares are probably chuckling...

On those 80-120 Ly courier missions I often make a bit more money honking systems along the way than from the mission reward itself. ;)

I just honk on my way through lol.
i also dont trade rares though, although i have been known to do 1 jump back and forth trades for a few 100k profit for 2 jumps. i made most of my money smuggling in the bubble then from robigo, now i mostly hit the combat zones for a mill here or there and try to get a few 100 merits in power play a day.
i try to mix up what i do so i dont get tired of doing it. one of these days il go on one of those trips in to the middile of no where. il probably invest in a detailed scanner when i do if they add that much money to the pot.

It really helps to have both the ADS and the DDS with you when going out far from the bubble. I have made 1 Fast trip to Sag A and had both with me on my Asp and made around 40 mio on that trip alone only scanning suns black holes and gasgiant if they were <1000 ls from main sun and ofcause the earthlike planets and a few waterworlds.... and I just took the straith line towards the center and 1 small sidestop on the way back to a blue nebular I kept seeing in the horison...

So even though it's not the fastest way to make profit it still can make you some money and it's totally without risks if you don't make any mistakes along the way, like falling asleep while jumping to the next system... :D I did once and was glad that I took a module repair kit with me.... ;)
