After watching from my SRV as my clipper was destroyed by someone seemingly very anti science.. I have switched ships and am providing escort cover at site 1 in Merope. Anyone passing through say hi

So I thought the barnacles were supposed to avaible in all modes I can only see it in open no in a private group or solo anyone else expierancing this?

Huh, so whatever the case is with this main structure of the barnacle, I'd hoping its either planting roots or seeds into the ground and having those seeds/roots grow into the barnacles we see outside. Which then those barnacles absorb the minerals in the ground to become a meta-alloy.

Here's to wishful thinking.

Yup, that's my thinking too.

The spikes are a wonderful mashup of visual design elements : texture like mussels growing on a worn pier support -

- but when you see the 'mussels' up close, they're not sea creatures at all, they're fruits!
The 'unripe' ones look like cocoa pods growing from a tree trunk, but as they ripen, they look more like cape gooseberries (physalis) wating to open.

The skin of the pod is more like snakeskin though - not unlike the salak fruit in fact -

It's clear the metal-bearing pods ripen as the 'tree' grows, and the ripe pod contains meta-alloys.

Which leaves the barnacle - what is its purpose?
I believe it's a combination of hopper and control centre. First, the barnacle is planted, then it causes trees to sprout around it. The trees mine metals, refine them, then combine them in the fruit pods.

Finally, the barnacle collects the ripe meta-alloy fruits and stores them in the armoured central structure, waiting for the farmer to return and collect the harvest.

So basically the Barnacles are just alien mining camps.

At least Meta-Alloys are more valuable than all this damn rutile I keep finding.

Hey, maybe I'll be the first to find an alien tea factory.

More like mining farms, but the premise is nice and interesting.

I'd say either a refinery, or a plant.

Edit: Maybe this is also how the UAs are potentially made or may be a key role in its creation?

I don't know if anyone has discovered this yet.

Full speed boosting into the main structure does no damage to your ship; no shield damage, no hull damage. The same is true if I boost into the spines; no damage.

what the hell?

You're entirely right.

Perhaps indicative of the Meta-Alloy's healing properties? Has there been any indication that the Meta-Alloys are helping Obsidian Orbital?

I am debating selling my Meta-Alloys at Obsidian, but would it be better to sell it, or if I see a mission, take it? Unsure.

when you 'ram' the center it doesn't even indicate you rammed it at all.

It's probably a bug. Since it isn't being classified as an entity maybe?

Edit: Invisible wall?

The symbols on the Barnacle remind me a lot of Barnard's Loop, although the two shorter lines don't really match up with that:

A similar concept to the mining camps, except you get 50+ assorted materials including a few very rare materials (depending on the planet it seems, one was spawning Mercury fairly reliably, then on a different planet I was getting a lot of Yttrium) and two commodities worth nearly 90,000 credits each.
