When will the game be finished?

I am also in the software development business and I wish that I could get my clients to pay upfront and then pay an extra amount when I want them to test my applications when I appear to be running behind schedule!
Perhaps your software is not exiting or aspirational, otherwise your clients would pay upfront and pay extra for testing.

If I was being cynical I would say that you are milking things a little bit by asking people to pay 200+ euros/ pounds to participate in the alpha phase.

hi robert

you have found your way around already and got some decent answers it seems.

just one point for me to pick up on. it is becoming a "urban legend" fast this "milking the backers for 200 GBP" idea. NOTHING will make FDEV more money then getting ELITE : DANGEROUS released to the PUBLIC.

selling 200GBP spots for alpha testing will eventually mean that FDEV end up a very crash strapped company.

just saying ;)

On the contrary, I think the release date is already fairly well surmised (September anniversary), so any additional 'up-selling' between now and then is money in the bank.

Let's hope it isn't so blatant that they lose some of the goodwill people have for the project.

you little devil - i though that was our dirty little sekrit

however, if what you say is common knowledge, then anyone "buying up" is just a fool with more money then patience ;)

and i have been a big fool

I am a digital 30€ backer and as such will just have to wait.

damn! I got it even cheaper. But being cheap comes with a price: feeling like the filth under the doormat in front of the Frontier office door. In case there is a doormat.

See if they would release a "spinning ship in space" demo for every backer, out of good will and backer appreciation, I would easily pay 50 bucks on top for the expansion pass. Maybe more. Because I´m a self made millionaire with too much time at hand.

I never told anyone, but what I really want is landing on planets.
Now you know my weak spot.

/hug

i love you like a lost brother*

*not that i have ever had the urge to land on a planet...

That´s the nicest thing anyone ever said to me in a forum. *sniff*

btw, got any spare souls you want to sell? You know where to find me.

Now trading in Alpha access for souls, PM if you´re interested

Hi Robert

As you're in software development you should know that things can slip and fall behind schedule. The game (ED) was funded by means of a kickstart campaign and there it was stated as "estimate" March 2014. Alpha was on time, but with various issues being found the process is taking longer than expected.

AFAIK there are at least 4, probably 5-6 Alpha main rounds (4 being trading) then it's onto Premium Beta. That should last a few months then regular beta, then release.

For what it's worth I find the alpha quite fun - loads missing (check the DDF Archives for threads on features to come) but slowly coming together.

Patience will definitely help keep you sane :)

Yeah its somewhat risky and feel unprofessional for a company to tell a date when they aren't sure they can reach it. I prefer not knowing any date than feel deceived in the end.

I recently upgraded to alpha because I have more free time now and I want to help find and report the bugs. And believe me, there are bugs. Ships flying through the Dreadnaught without actually hitting it, lag and stuttering when various things happen, etc. It's not at a "playable" stage, where "playable" is defined as "hey, this is fun and I'm not upset because the ship I was just attacking and almost destroyed has suddenly disappeared and shown up right behind me." Because that's where it is right now.

But it looks great and it's coming along. It's a hell of a job to program something this big, and an even bigger job to make sure it works near 100% so things like disappearing ships don't happen anymore.

I ran a Neverwinter Nights server for several years, and I caught more hell when I decided to add an entire Drow & Duergar races and Underground that covered the entire stretch of what I already had above ground. It kept getting pushed back (mainly because of time as it was a part-time thing for me), but also because of production, building, more enemies added, scripting for new areas with unusual things, and lots of testing, retesting, and more retesting. I finally started telling my players, "It'll be done when it's done. Stop asking. Because I want it done and available as much as y'all do."

So I understand what our programming team is up against. Let's let them make sure that they get it right, and with plenty of testing, so the masses will be happy.

Its Goonswarm btw. And they only do all that heinous stuff because they love you. They are also, despite what you may have heard, exceedingly poor at internet spaceships. You have absolutely nothing to fear.

Cheers matey. Tis all about numbers with them or something?

Yes. But having published an estimated date, most reputable companies will publish revisions to that estimate as and when they become known.

doesn't kickstarter require an estimated delivery date for rewards? it would seem so as its on all the pledge levels.

as for updating the ETA they have, it now says 2014. giving a more accurate date would just be setting themselves up to miss it and disappoint the backers all over again.

My dear Jezzah, at some point in the future, you will beg for our intervention, you will subconsciously hope for our presence and our influence.
Who else will be your eternal foes? Scripted NPC ships? Come one. You need real antagonists. Frontier needs us. You know you want us. And we want you.
Our plan is not to destroy the game, we will make the game feel real, more dangerous. Become one of us. Incredible riches await you.

Let my pal Harrison sum it up for you:

That mostly came about because of the way the EvE skill system works. You accumulate skill points in real time, so the older the character is, the better the ships it can pilot.

A corp of new players couldn't hope to match a more established corp ship for ship, so goonfleet resorted to mass wave attacks of cheap disposable ships instead. Surprisingly, it worked, leading to much gnashing of teeth from the "elite" of that game.

Goonfleet weren't all that bad, they genuinely started out as the plucky underdogs. Once they got really big they stared into the abyss a little, but even at their height they were no worse than any other alliance... and watching them repeatedly implode was always good for a laugh.
