UAs, Barnacles & More Thread 5 - The Canonn

ATTENTION COMMANDERS:

There is a team blockading Maia and destroying any explorer they find, without any warning. Extreme precautions. A defense team is being formed, you'll have support pretty soon.

Dont get me wrong its nice to get support but dont forget they want the combat. There were reports earlier in the thread with some of the protagonists claiming to have billions of credits to spend on griefing the area.

With this in mind I'd really recommend playing in solo or in trusted private groups.

They want attention so the best way (imo) to dissuade them is to avoid them. It'll get pretty boring camping a station with no traffic

JUST A SUGGESTION AND A REMINDER ABOUT SOUND ANALYSIS:

Remember that all the audio breakthrough we made in the past could have been done SIMPLY using EAR, PEN and PAPER.
The software we used (i.e. Sonic Visualizer), was just to help spot morse's dashes and dots, visually. Nothing more.

I don't think FD wants us to use professional tools or similar, to find some hidden content.
Everyone should be able to solve any mystery in game.
It's been like that in the past, it MUST be like that even now.

REMEMBER, and don't become mad about it ;)

Not sure if that made any sense my friend. We used in the past, but we shouldn't use it now?
Agree with the things you said about finding it in the game though.

Still it doesn't prevent us from
a) taking screenshots, map / galaxy / logos - and rotating these using tools . Either looking at UA's or Barnacles.
b) recording sounds and listening to them, perhaps looking for patterns aka morse. Both UA and Barnacles.
c) using tools to plot positions and make ship diagrams. Both UA, and now diagrams for Barnacles.
It's what we've done in the past, same as we're doing just right now.

Anyway, I'll try not to sidetrack too much. It's probably not making any sense to argue about these things. :)

I have solved it and have an image of the aliens. It all fits , the barnacle are their incubators which use the metals in the ground to nourish their offspring. the metal alloys are the pupal stage of their race.

Indeed - broken things

I did a bit of testing on this, yesterday. It looks very much like a transaction server connection quality issue.

What I found:

- Cabled internet. no problems in any mode.
- Wifi close to router. Few problem.
- Wifi, medium signal strenght. Several problems with Solo mode. 60/40% channce of fail. Other Modes are OK if other commanders are in inctance.
- Wifi, low signal strenght. Spawns only when other commanders are at location before me. Can't even connect to Solo (Transaction server).

Thats all :)

This thread really does deserve the name 'threadnaught' doesn't it?

Two things I want to talk about:

One, with the capability and ambition of FD in sound design of the game, there is simply no way they would use the same sound clips for both the barnacle and the UA if they were not related. They design a different sound for everything in game. Why would this be the first time they cut corners and recycle sound assets?

Second, from the first time we heard of the term 'Large Barnacle', I'm hang up on the word 'large' here. I don't think there are different sizes of barnacles and these happen to be the large ones. I think, with the weird coincidence(?) of the barnacle logo fitting almost perfectly to the negative image of the in game 'LARGE' Magellanic Cloud, it could be the space game design equivalent of a Freudian slip.

They could have called them large barnacles for short of 'LMC barnacles' during their design process and that term somehow made it into the mission description.

End of tinfoil hattery.

I like it =D

It really troubles me how much it fits..

This actually makes sense...if it needs to be from an RP perspective, its just using the ship's computer to record/rotate/play back/etc with audio and visual logs.

Allow me to throw my current thoughts in this thread. If anyone is new to Elite or only plays a couple of hours per week and he/she prefers to play Solo. Is he/she still able to do all these events in there own pace? I mean the artifacts (already discovered and figured what they're doing), the barnacles... I mean for all I know within 3 months a really new player does his/her first trip and encounters thargoids because they were triggered by the barnacles event already, but that player never knew about it let alone took part in it. How does all this work for solo players now, and for those who perhaps might start over in a few months?

I think rizal72 here was just saying "don't overthink the sound message" and "likely it can be solved without professional tools", not really trying to forbid anyone using the tools they have at their disposal.

Look more closely and there's quite a few areas it doesn't fit, plus there's the already stated trouble with it being a negative pattern that arbitrarily stops some distance away from the LMC. I don't think the LMC or Barnard's Loop are good fits to be honest.

I'm cabled - wifi would seem like a very bad idea.

The overall backstory of the game waits for no one. It's what it means to be a living, breathing galaxy. New players get to play whatever the current story status is when they join and that's it.

If they want to learn about the past incidents, there are sources, both official and third party, on the internet but the game itself doesn't care one way or the other. Even the current events are not apparent if you are not actively looking for them and participating with the community. It's just like real world where you don't have any idea about anything if no one tells you or you go looking for information yourself. This is what I like about this game. I, personally, wouldn't have it any other way.

BTW, this is imho the meaning of 'cutthroat galaxy' as well. It's not that the game is hard or it's free for all in Open as many other players are trying to make it to be. Cutthroat galaxy just means the game doesn't really care about anyone.

But haven't they lost their RP justification for shooting on sight with the meta-alloys apparently helping the station? What could possibly be motivating them?

Maybe they are worried than when a station hits critical mass of Meta-Alloy parts the ownership of said station will flip to the new unknown species's.
New base problem solved.

If that happens who would bear the responsibility, anyone who sold Meta-Alloy to a station.

Can we even get to the LMC in game, it's like 163,000 light years away?

This is fairly convincing:
https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDange...cation_of_emblem_on_top_of_barnacle_has_been/

I also wanted to say before I'm away from the gam/forums for the weekend that it looks to me after a quick glance like the barnacle audio does have morse in it. There's just a lot more background noise.

Oh my screen x)
I should have posted it to reddit, forgot it.
How can we add cmdr tag with our ingame name on reddit? didnt find it.
