The Sidewinder-SRV-Explorer Challenge

Oh man, that sucks! Sorry to hear that.

Would love to meet you out in the black in a sidey...are you trying again?

Frawd

Certainly keen to give it another go.

Been experimenting with as part of landing overrides setting vertical thrusters to one of the radials on the x-55 for very fine control for landings, combined with A thrusters should make landings on even moderate G worlds possible.

Good to hear you're back at it Cmdr.

So is the frame rate drop you experienced only associated with AMD cards and Windows 10? I have AMD but have stayed on Windows 7. Haven't experienced anything like you described thankfully....

I did some short testing on landing without shields and found it was impossible to land repeatedly without taking damage. Infact it seem to be bugged. The damage seemed to occur just when the gear is about to be planted on ground and control is removed from player, it automatically is setting your ship lower with a sudden drop, no matter how slow and featherly I tried touching the surface. Damage seemed to happen randomly.

I did the test with a normal Eagle.

Attempt two begins

The Kereru is refitted again, A PP A Thrusters and a pair of HSL now they can be deployed in SC
Drops the jump range a bit though

Screenshot_0760.png

HD 168675 had no planets so moved on to HD 167815
Screenshot_0763.png

Lots of downed probes but nothing Alien on this Metal rich world about a Blue Giant

With MB saying Barnacles can be found in Nebulae, am now on the way to NGC 4463 SECTOR RY-R E4-5 a planetary nebula around a neutron star.
I am working on the new theory that the meta-alloys and Space Barnacles can be found in nebulae that are Nova remnants as they are harvesting/grow/eat what ever rare heavy materials a Nova/Super Nova produce

One the way found a system with FOUR water worlds, lacking a Detailed surface scanner cant tell if any are terriformable, but a bounty of life none the less.

326 Jumps in since departure, crossed 10,000 total career so far.
NGC 4463 SECTOR RY-R E4-5 still 2764 light years away
Screenshot_0786.png

Moved to below the Brown dwarf belt, as with an average 2 jumps per tank, striking one is enough to reevaluate a route and we average 68 jumps per 1000 light years, none of this 2.5Kly an hour nonsense here.
Screenshot_0785.png

So far
1 Emergency Heat sink deployment due to a contact binary
1 ELW
6 WW
and several Metal worlds that looked like Ammonia ones

No further landings until NGC 4463 SECTOR RY-R E4-5

But lots of jumps

Love the new skin Cmdr...looks awesome. At some point are you heading out past the core/joining up with distant worlds?

Frawd

My Buckyball racing livery - seemed appropriate
After NGC 4463 SECTOR RY-R E4-5 I have a system to survey for the Pioneers' Collective out between the Lagoon and Triphid Nebulae
This will be a good test to see how crossing the inter arm expanse goes
From there I have 3 more candidate systems in the Plaa Ain Sector.

That is all heading in the same direction as the Distance Worlds Expedition but as it takes me about 2 hours to travel 1,000 light years I doubt I will be able to keep up or rendezvous with them at any point.

Plaa Ain will put me close enough to make a trip to the Great Annihilator, which I have never been to thus far, and at that distance, I have surveyed a few other Planetary nebulae from my last trip, to see if they have landables, that will get me to the Core or past the half way line.

Whilst the Barnacles have been found in Merope and the surrounding nebula, I still think it is worth while to survey other nebulae for their presence

Nice to see your own name on a system...while I know they're out there I have never seen one of mine

Frawd

Cheers, with luck I'll run into one of yours

Zinc Zinc Zinc and Chromium seems to be the metals of choice for NGC 4463 SECTOR RY-R E4-5 3 A

Lots of crash sites

Screenshot_0789.png

Prettier at night
The terrain in the chasms seems rather smooth and sand like - old volcanic flows, might explain the mountain peaks being a different colour as well

For the fellow mortals who simply must have shields on their SRV Sidewinder explorer,

You can slot a class 1 prismatic shield if you are OK with not having a DSS.

http://coriolis.io/outfit/sidewinder/02A2A2A1D1A1D1C----2ov6p62f.Iw1-EA==.Aw1-EA==

Yeah, I had noticed in the shipyard tools the class 1 shields but never tried them in game, I think the Bi-Weave is also an option as a class 1 C, 25 ton optimum which is the Sidewinders hull mass.

Shields would have been nice but I wanted the cargo racks

I have read the Barnacles do not show up as Blue PoI so the plan has been, after a bit of surface operations
Fly inverted

Screenshot_0797.png

Using the Top canopy window to view the ground at 2 kms and fly down a longitude line

Screenshot_0796.png

Everything I have spotted so far has been debris and distress beacons

Screenshot_0789_1.png
Which are getting easier to spot as one practices
Even if it is annoying little piles of junk in dark craters you need the ships lights to ID

Screenshot_0798.png

The problem is the Sidewinder needs to be refueled every 5 hours - outside the system - and so can only fly a quarter of the diameter of the planet in that time, so I am looking a weeks and weeks to survey the one planet starting at the -14.8 line

Screenshot_0795.png

Are there any Geological features I should focus on, to help narrow down my search?

Many many many hours of Searching the surface of NGC 4463 SECTOR RY-R E4-5 3 A at about 2 Kms height, no Barnacles
Of course i think it would take over 8 weeks to actually survey the whole planet

This was the closest formation that looked promising from 2 km up :(
Screenshot_0800.png

Rocks, and not even in a stone circle when I got close....

So now to see if I can cross the abyss between the arms/spirals core ward

Red Gas Giant Type IV as I like them

Where are you in the galaxy Cmdr?

Frawd

With the survey of the planet, Not far in, but crossed the first gap towards the Core

Did find this nice ELW

But no Rings or belts so not a submission for the Walt's Colonization plans

And over the Polar Cap of an Ammonia World

Contrary to Rumour, I have not collided with a rogue comet
Just been making the most of summer

Current location is 3320::83::13,120
The Gap before the inner most arm and the Core, though it has stars a plenty so no worries
Screenshot_0815.png

Well maybe a worry or two, almost a Brown Dwarf too far...
