Oculus SDK 0.8 + Horizons 64bit + Win 7 64bit + SteamVR = Formula for success finally!

The current SteamVR beta only has Vive and Chaperone stuff? Unable to calibrate the DK2 due to it looking for different inputs.

Can confirm, got it working. I did not use a SteamVR Beta, just the normal one.

In regards to my post above, you can configure SteamVR with a DK2, you dont need a Vive.

edit: What about best possible settings (gtx970)? Is the "Getting the Best DK2 VR Experience: Guide/Compendium for NVIDIA Users" still valid when using this method with SteamVR and Runtime 0800?

Yes I use a lot of Dr. Kai's compendium even with using this setup. Still the best thread ever created for this by far. Follow the first ten items but use the resources for 0.8, win 10, elite launcher best experience yet

OK, I am actually getting very good framerates inside stations. NO DSR, I have used most of Dr Kais copendium, besides DSR and Nvidia color correction (not applicable when using runtime 0800, due to Rift not being 2nd display), I have used a Sweetfx setting that included Nvidia Color correction. Also some custom Elite settings, from Nvidia panel, see screenshot. Turning down "HMD quality" (a slider ingame), two notches from the far right, makes this a very pleasant experience for me. Also I have the rest around high or medium. On a GTX 970. Big thanks for the guide!!!

For those of us still having issues with monitor refresh rates locking the ones on the Rift, simple solution:

Change your monitor display ratio to any 16/10 resolutions - Ex 1680/1050

Problem solved.

Longer answer: The SteamVR wrapper somehow carries the monitor refresh rate when the monitor is in a 16/9 display ratio. Setting it to a different display ratio solves the problem.

Do you mean set your Windows Desktop resolution to 16/10 ratio before starting ED?

Or do you mean in ED, change the resolution to a 16/10 ratio in options after starting ED?

---

Just want to clarify as I'll experiment with this myself, even though I know I get 75fps even with a 16/9 Windows desktop ratio as I'm still curious if it will help (By using performance HUD and Afterburner).

Cheers
Tim

I tried all this yesterday but every time I mess with the Nvidia control panel I always get worse results.

The only thing allowing me to run this 0.8 runtime with a GTX970 is to change the Nvidia screen resolution to the highest possible that accepts 75fps. I think it's 1280 by something. It's a shame as I have to change screen resolution each time I want to play Elite and then remember to set it back afterwards. (I believe my monitor is not up to 75fps at 1920 screen res). I would have thought having 2 Win 7 log in accounts would let me get away with it but unfortunately not.

I also tried the 0.5 to 0.8 switch - it didn't work, and also the GUI colour change - that didn't work as well. Maybe I'm missing things that you computer savvy people know inside out!

Gutted that I can't run HL2 on 0.8 either!

I did not really see any increase from the Nvidia settings either, but picture quality is subjective. I have to change resoultion ingame as well, it loads up to 1280x768 by default in the rift, always. I could not get the switcher to work either, and this road actually somehow led to my Windows 10 crashing. So using this method with Runtime 0800 is better for me, then it just works.

Did you create the custom resolution and after selecting it from the invidia control panel applying it? The monitor Screen didn't do nothing or flicker?
You have to select it from the Nvidia control Panel, if you select it from the desktop it will reset the refresh to 60hz

Guys just ignore this custom resolution stuff. Just use any existing 16:10 display ratios at 'any' refresh rate, it doesn't matter!

320x200-----16:10
640x400-----16:10
1280x800-----16:10
1440x900-----16:10
1680x1050-----16:10
1920x1200-----16:10
2560x1600-----16:10
3840x2400-----16:10
7680x4800-----16:10

The oculus ignores the refresh rate using any of those above and automatically defaults to 75hz

I still get wicked low frame rate and serious judder. 980ti, dual Xeon x5450's, 16gig ram, windows 10, DK2. Xeons are unparked so they are ready to crank whenever needed - this sped up the frame rate by about 5fps. I run anywhere from 20fps to 50fps in game. The only time it is ever at 75 is during the loading screen. Ugh. 20fps is very barfy in case anyone is wondering.

Thanks for this thread! Repped. But I was really struggling to get things smooth. Changing resolutions/refreshrates did not help. But I think I finally figured it out. Every time I close game, I need to change back to fullscreen mode. For some reason, when game is started in windowed mode, tracking is stuttering. And when choosing fulscreen, game starts in fulscreen but then changes automatically to windowed, without stuttering.

I don't have VR gear yet, but respect (and rep) for documenting a process for those that do.

Taking the time to document your experience in detail may help others.

Will not the change to 16:10 skiew (dont know the word) the ingame assets on a DK2 display? Make planet oval etc.

No, as it's not the Oculus resolution that is being changed. The game plays on the Oculus at 1080p regardless of the settings in the primary monitor. The SteamVR refresh rate "bug" only happens when the desktop (primary monitor) is set to a 16:9 ratio. However no matter the resolution on the monitor, it does not affect the Oculus otherwise.

Instead of using win 7's resolution settings, I went to the Nvidia one and scrolled down the list until I picked up a 75hz refresh rate and selected that. I didn't program a custom one, I didn't know I could? My monitor looks terrible but the rift works nicely. If I reduce super sampling to 0.8 then it's pretty smooth- and the in game res is the best I've found it so far.

So is there a way of telling Elite to to run those settings but nothing else?

Ill try this next time, thanks. What I did find was every so often the game would decide to mess up the refresh rate and I had to start the whole process again. One time fps dropped to something like 10 so I could barely control the mouse, and other times just like the initial set up where I couldn't do a thing. I don't know why it would change settings without me doing a thing!?!

If you go in the resolution page and select a res. , you won't be able to costumize. Go out from the page, go back in ans select Costomize. From there you can do what ever you want. If you do a error, just don't touch nothing for 15sec. It will go back to normal

Well, had a couple of days of testing various runtimes and windows versions.... sorry to report that on my i7 4790k and gtx 970 runtime 5 in extended is still much, much better than using runtime 8 and steam VR. Ran a dual boot windows 7 and windows 10 and tested with my ship in the same spot, sitting on a landing pad at a settlement on a planet (probably the most graphically intensive situation) and can report that with steam/runtime 8 on both windows version I had to completely turn all settings to low and turn shadows off completely to get 75 fps... with runtime 5 on both versions of windows it was butter smooth with medium shadows and various settings ranging from low to med.

Conclusion - If your system isn't super powerful and you need every last FPS, then runtime 5 and extended still wins.

EDIT 1 - I suspect it's due to rendering the second monitor window.

EDIT 2 - I also obviously had horrible smearing on runtime 8 as you cant alter the nvidia colour settings in direct mode.

I'm looking in to upgrading my computer but your report suggests I may not have to. runtime 5 I was hitting 75fps easy (low graphics mode but since DK2 is so low-res anyway...). With runtime 8 I'm down to absurdly low FPS and though I know my processor is outdated it all worked fine before. So maybe I'll hold off for "official" operation of Rift before I worry too much!

I had the opposite. I ended up giving up with 0.5 and revisited the Rift with the release of 0.8.

Using a stock 4790K and 780ti (about the same spec as a 970) , I could not get jagger free use.

With 0.8 and SteamVR I was set to Ultra, shadows on medium, Bloom Off, Ambient Occ off and it gave me my first truly smooth encounter with ED in the rift . It was still no good on planets tho.

Seems like a one size fits all will never apply to this evolving technology.

I've since upgraded to a 980ti and using Ultra with only Ambient Occ turned off. Planets are now much better behaved, but I still feel like it's border line performance at Ultra on planets. There's room to lower things when my CV1 arrives.
