The Voiceattack Discussion Thread

It will give an ease and a speed of additional execution to use the voice command. It will also be the grail for the lazy people...:)
LOL, cheeky, but I don't think lazy people would take the time and effort needed to work out and programme in the commands. ;)

I like the idea of voice attack of a number of reasons.

1. It helps older gamers (Myself included) who's reactions have become somewhat glacial over the years to multi-task in an environment saturated with stimuli.

2. It'll help improve accessibility for gamers with physical disadvantages or disabilities.

3. The use of an Occlusion Rift means you cannot see the keyboard. Using speech input solves this conundrum to a greater extent. (I'm definitely factoring in a Rift as a future purchase now!)

4. All that and it's just so cool to use :D.

Love it :)

Voice Attack

I'm having trouble making VA interact with ED.
I wanted the deploy landing gear thing and so I bought VA. It seems to work great with everything other than ED.
The key sequences are fine. They pop up splendidly in Notepad.
I followed the sequence laid out by Helhawk666 in this thread: Frustrated disabled alpha tester with all the delays etc...
I've reassigned the original bindings for the panels and when I use the keys on the physical keyboard they work fine.
When VA "presses" the same keys nothing happens. I get the acknowledgement at the end that I added, "undercarriage deployed", but no actual deployment and no changing of panels and selecting of options.

I've tried VA set to send commands to the currently active window and also to ED specifically. No joy.
The key bindings are in the right hand of the two vertical columns inside ED. I usually move around the menus with a joystick hat and a couple of joystick buttons so that's the left column binding. The default keys WSADQE for up, down, left, right, panel left, panel right are in the second column.

Doesn't seem to interact with ED at all.
Anyone got a clue what I'm doing wrong ?

VA requires admin privilege to interface with ED properly. (run the program as Admin)

But curious as to how you think to get the gears via VA as there is no assignment right now, and there is no "default" position on the panel to macro the movements...

There doesn't need to be an assignment.
If you can navigate through the menus with keys you just do that with VA. It's all in the thread.

Running VA as admin makes no difference.

Could be timing; you sometimes need to allow a period for the game to react before sending another command, most noticeably when the interface response is not instant e.g. when a menu deploys or a panel changes.

I see, you use single inputs (ie left panel leaft panel up / down / etc). Takes a long time. :(

Now, for the commands, make sure that the keypress time is at least .5 seconds and that the key input method is for window games ( Directx).

OK. Maybe I'm not making myself understood.

I am getting no response in ED using VA.
At all.
None.
Zero.
Doesn't matter what key I add as a VA command.
Doesn't matter what the delays are. They're all correct as per the original thread I posted up there anyway.
Even a single key press does not work.
No response.
No panels come up.
No scoops deploy.
No lasers fire.
Nothing.

That was it.
Excellent.
Thank you.
I don't have to blame my migraine for being a drongo now.

The delays are OK. It only takes two seconds to open the menu, select the item and make the menu go away.
Much, much faster than I can do it with the stick.

Throat Microphone for VA

I was wondering if any of you guys have tried using VoiceAttack with a throat microphone. A throat mic may perhaps work better with a surround sound external speaker setup.

I really like how VoiceAttack works in Elite, but it's only effective when using headphones. I prefer playing most of my games in true surround sound with external speakers rather than using a 5.1 headset.

I see there's a throat mic available for the xbox which comes with a standard jack that can plug into a PC (£5 on amazon)

Great Video Spiggs, not seen it before. Hamerstein has recommended VA to me a while ago, so I will certainly be looking at this soon.

"glacial" reactions gave me a chortle :D

Voice Attack Random

Hi all, my very first post after lurking in the shadows for a while. 57 year old Brit here who played Elite 1 on a C64 all those years ago. You have made this a great place to hang out.

Signed up for the Premium beta yesterday and I have been setting up the mighty Voice Attack today in the alpha 1 single player, that FD give you so you don't go completely bazo waiting for the beta launch.

I got in touch with Gary (the developer of VA) earlier on their support forum and asked him to consider a new feature "Random text to speech phrases"

Currently you can have VA replay a phrase following recognition of the command. Example: I say "Power to Engines" VA comes back with "Power to Engines" or what ever phrase you type in the profile.
Thats all great but it gets old quick hearing the same computer phrase over and over. So I suggested to Gary to allow multiple phrases that VA could randomise.

Example..
I say "Power to Engines"
Voice Attack says..

"Power to engines"
"Engine power increased"
"If your sure you can afford the fuel"
"Enhanced engine power"
"Put your foot down, big boy"
It picks a different random phase everytime.

cool idea right?

What really blew me away was within about 10mins of my post he replied saying he thought it was a cool idea and he had implemented it and would be in the next build, how flipping amazing is that?

So when you enter the play back phrase in VA you will be able to enter things like
Power to engines;Engine power increased;If your sure you can afford the fuel;
Enhanced engine power;Put your foot down, big boy

separating the phrases by a semicolon

Looking forward to the next VA build, what a great developer

Best Paul

You have to love devs like that, they give you that warm fuzzy feeling inside!

I'm waiting on my thrustmaster to arrive before setting up additional features but voice attack and IR tracker are on my list

That is cool, whether I'd use it or not is another matter however. I kinda like having austere, utilitarian, responses - helps my immersion I guess :) As to VoiceAttack - very impressed.

Ask your new mate Gary to work harder on recognising joystick commands - I've got flight assist toggle mapped to both a joystick button and keyboard press so I can use Joystick or VoiceAttack, and though the joystick button press is easiest, i get no verbal confirmation of command issued. VoiceAttack responds to 'Flight Assist off' and 'Flight Assist On' commands well and gives verbal confirmation, but I'd like the best of both worlds please :) Joystick button press and VoiceAttack verbal confirmation of command carried out.
