Worth buying now?

There is certainly enough wiggle room for Frontier to fulfill the letter of their commitment rather than the spirit, if they so choose. Make your guess based on your own assessment of their performance to date.

I don't even think it needs wiggle room; the qualifier "major" is clear.

I reckon it's been put there to head off people demanding that every piece of extra content (including cosmetic or trivial items such as might be offered to help fund the ongoing game) should be free at that level. That's not IMO in the spirit of the KS promise, but it's arguably in the letter ... and some people are pretty entitled.

I'm one of those £100 Premium Beta Backer and that is quite alot for my budget. Never had done it before and I know David Braben & Ian Bell do make an excellent game whenever they are commit to thiers project.

They are no "indie" and if you don't know Bell & Braben then you were not even born yet, if not in your mommy pram. :D

Im looking to buy the game for 50 bucks (not the alpha access, just the regular game).

Is there any good reason to purchase it now, rather than wait until it comes out?

Like, will the price go up?

Thanks

IMO: don't preorder. In the absence of an nda, wait for videos and reviews of gamma before deciding to put cash down.

Why gamble? Too many people on this forum already who have gambled and regret it. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain by waiting

Also me think it would be an excellent idea to locked Elite's thread under frontier.co.uk except for those who commit and paid pre-order backers.

At least from posting ..

It's hard to really give advice, if someone had told me to hang off and not bother with the DDF I think I'd be mad at myself and the person who gave that advice as I have been very happy with the direction of the game (this isn't including access to the beta builds first or 50% off insurance) and the way it has played. Right now even in its basic Alpha state it is the best space game out there and the basic game loop is already addictive.

Beta is where we can expect to see the content get added to the game, it will be buggy to begin with and could be right through to standard beta and gamma, but I suspect its going to surprise a fair few. No I don't have inside knowledge, just from what I know from following its development and from previous Alpha experience in other games, so in this respect no harm in waiting.

Overall I'd say go with your heart, mind and wallet, this is ultimately a decision you have to make.

Unless you want to get in on prerelease testing, I see only 1 reason not to wait for final release before you buy: we don't know if or when the expansion pass will be withdrawn from sale. IMO that pass is a pretty good deal for an enthusiast, if you know now that you will probably get all the expansions as & when they come out.

Heck no. £70 .. for a video game? As much as I want to play a great new Elite installment, we haven't seen anything to justify that kind of price tag yet.

The most I have ever spent on a single game was probably Skyrim (£40 for game + 1 the one expansion I didn't torrent). Even then I wish I had just torrented it all as it was parp. Crusader Kings 2 cost £19.99 iirc when released and the expansions were ok for the first year or so but then they started charging more and more for less and less so once again, off we went to the pirate bay for it all!

I think, with respect, having been burned more times than I can remember on game pre-orders, £70 down now is silly money. £100-200 for Alpha? Buying HOTAS and VR headsets etc? Really?? There's a reason there's only a few hundred people on this forum getting all excited about overly simplistic pew and a few jurassic textures.

Far more depth in the gameplay (fly here trade, shoot some guy in a circle turning arc using gimballed weapons yawn) and proof of all the ambitious concepts they stated in DDF is needed before I warm up my paypal account for sure. I'm pretty certain many thousands of others have had a look and said no ta. This forum isn't very .. representative. In fact I lost interest in it in a big way when they went all apartheid soon after the Kickstarter ended. I don't think thats 'welcoming' and providing a pathetic dribble of media and updates and asking me to pay huge sums to feel part of the buzz and access the various forums was just lame. Since then I am very much with the silent majority of wait and see folks who ignore the hype and focus on whats actually being offered/delivered.

there must have been a new definition of 'silent' that i missed.....

There is also another reason ... Currently those are of preorders. But later, the retail version will be certainly, more expensive

I must admit I find a post release price hike unlikely for the main game as well.

Is there a source for this info? If it is true I have a few mates I should let know

I think the 'all future MAJOR expansions' for £35 is a good deal, and actually cheaper than if you pledged earlier at kickstarter or backers website before the new shop.

I think the expansion pass is very good value, I could of gone for standard beta but I would prefer the expansions when they come out, depending on if we can upgrade from gamma to standard beta I may do that time will tell.

If so, then yes it's best to preorder. I was unaware of any price increase.

No increase has been announced. This is only speculation on my part. But a price increase for the retail version (outside of pre-order) would be normal, I think

At this point its all guess work, but for what its worth I think when it goes live it will be £35 for a down loaded version and £40/45 for a DRM free hard copy.

These will come with no expansions or special starter ships I would guess.

The pre-orders are often less expensive. For now, those are of commitment of backers. No the general public

I remember having bought in pre-order, Windows 7 Professional 32 and 64 bit in DVD box for 100 euros. For the release, it was costing 300 euros

I loved the packaging of the original Elite. I read both the Space Trader's Flight Training Manual and Dark Wheel from cover to cover. Will be interested to see the packaging of ED. So yes, I can see that costing more than download-only.

Are current standard orders going to be part of the gamma?

"Pre-order Elite: Dangerous to have a download of the game available as soon as its released! Elite: Dangerous will be available once the Standard Beta phase is completed."

Guess so.
