Can confirm, got it working. I did not use a SteamVR Beta, just the normal one.
In regards to my post above, you can configure SteamVR with a DK2, you dont need a Vive.
edit: What about best possible settings (gtx970)? Is the "Getting the Best DK2 VR Experience: Guide/Compendium for NVIDIA Users" still valid when using this method with SteamVR and Runtime 0800?
For those of us still having issues with monitor refresh rates locking the ones on the Rift, simple solution:
Change your monitor display ratio to any 16/10 resolutions - Ex 1680/1050
Problem solved.
Longer answer: The SteamVR wrapper somehow carries the monitor refresh rate when the monitor is in a 16/9 display ratio. Setting it to a different display ratio solves the problem.
I tried all this yesterday but every time I mess with the Nvidia control panel I always get worse results.OK, I am actually getting very good framerates inside stations. NO DSR, I have used most of Dr Kais copendium, besides DSR and Nvidia color correction (not applicable when using runtime 0800, due to Rift not being 2nd display), I have used a Sweetfx setting that included Nvidia Color correction. Also some custom Elite settings, from Nvidia panel, see screenshot. Turning down "HMD quality" (a slider ingame), two notches from the far right, makes this a very pleasant experience for me. Also I have the rest around high or medium. On a GTX 970. Big thanks for the guide!!!

Do you mean set your Windows Desktop resolution to 16/10 ratio before starting ED?
Or do you mean in ED, change the resolution to a 16/10 ratio in options after starting ED?
---
Just want to clarify as I'll experiment with this myself, even though I know I get 75fps even with a 16/9 Windows desktop ratio as I'm still curious if it will help (By using performance HUD and Afterburner).
Cheers

The only thing allowing me to run this 0.8 runtime with a GTX970 is to change the Nvidia screen resolution to the highest possible that accepts 75fps. I think it's 1280 by something. It's a shame as I have to change screen resolution each time I want to play Elite and then remember to set it back afterwards. (I believe my monitor is not up to 75fps at 1920 screen res). I would have thought having 2 Win 7 log in accounts would let me get away with it but unfortunately not.
I also tried the 0.5 to 0.8 switch - it didn't work, and also the GUI colour change - that didn't work as well. Maybe I'm missing things that you computer savvy people know inside out!
Gutted that I can't run HL2 on 0.8 either!

Guys just ignore this custom resolution stuff. Just use any existing 16:10 display ratios at 'any' refresh rate, it doesn't matter!
Will not the change to 16:10 skiew (dont know the word) the ingame assets on a DK2 display? Make planet oval etc.
Instead of using win 7's resolution settings, I went to the Nvidia one and scrolled down the list until I picked up a 75hz refresh rate and selected that. I didn't program a custom one, I didn't know I could? My monitor looks terrible but the rift works nicely. If I reduce super sampling to 0.8 then it's pretty smooth- and the in game res is the best I've found it so far.Did you create the custom resolution and after selecting it from the invidia control panel applying it? The monitor Screen didn't do nothing or flicker?
You have to select it from the Nvidia control Panel, if you select it from the desktop it will reset the refresh to 60hz

The oculus ignores the refresh rate using any of those above and automatically defaults to 75hz

So is there a way of telling Elite to to run those settings but nothing else?

Ill try this next time, thanks. What I did find was every so often the game would decide to mess up the refresh rate and I had to start the whole process again. One time fps dropped to something like 10 so I could barely control the mouse, and other times just like the initial set up where I couldn't do a thing. I don't know why it would change settings without me doing a thing!?!
Well, had a couple of days of testing various runtimes and windows versions.... sorry to report that on my i7 4790k and gtx 970 runtime 5 in extended is still much, much better than using runtime 8 and steam VR. Ran a dual boot windows 7 and windows 10 and tested with my ship in the same spot, sitting on a landing pad at a settlement on a planet (probably the most graphically intensive situation) and can report that with steam/runtime 8 on both windows version I had to completely turn all settings to low and turn shadows off completely to get 75 fps... with runtime 5 on both versions of windows it was butter smooth with medium shadows and various settings ranging from low to med.
Conclusion - If your system isn't super powerful and you need every last FPS, then runtime 5 and extended still wins.
EDIT 1 - I suspect it's due to rendering the second monitor window.
EDIT 2 - I also obviously had horrible smearing on runtime 8 as you cant alter the nvidia colour settings in direct mode.
