News on in-system travel

That wont work I'm afraid.

Ok, so how will you limit the players in-game then so we don't hit an "invisible wall"? We don't like invisible walls if you haven't noticed. :p

Fuel running out? And even if the fuel runs out...as far as I have understood it players will be able to jump to another players location, let's say if the ship breaks down. This means two players could work together...one flying further and further out and the other doing fuel runs...

Someone will try so there needs to be some sort of (semi) plausible explanation for why this can't be done.

What fuel is the other player using to do those back and forth fuel runs so that he has any left to give to the stranded player?

Sounds like he would be better off flying the whole trip himself.

You can only jump to a system star. Fuel would run out before you could get anywhere significant in most circumstances and good luck determining if you've hit an invisible wall or not on the outskirts of a system.

Ah, so "micro-jumps" are just faster versions of super-cruise that automatically goes in a straight line to the target? Not actual "jumps" in the same way as hyperspace jumps between systems are implemented?

If that's the case then the "problem" would indeed be solved since another player would also run out of fuel while going out to the location of the other players ship.

Fuel permitting it would take you about 22hours at 2000C to cross 5 lightyears of space (excluding accelleration/decelleration time).
And that would get you from Sol to at least 1 other star.

To me this sounds very well within limits of "reasonably doable" for a real nutter with a high amount of stubbourness :D

It's not the first time I have left my computer running for over a full day doing something I was willing to wait for. (Rendering fractals on a 386SX comes to mind  )

Still: fuel will be the problem!

Yep...did the exact same calculation...that's why I asked. Hehe :)

Indeed, my understanding of supercruise was that, by its very nature, the FSD would constantly use fuel. It's not a case of accelerating up to 2000c and then coasting. If you get up to 2000c and run out of go-go juice then the FSD stops and you're stuffed like a christmas turkey!

Also from the fuel proposal in comparison to normal flight mode - "Supercruise drains fuel from the AFR at an accelerated rate (e.g. changing the operating time from hours to minutes)"

As much as people complained about X:R, I always liked the rapid approach of planets and stars while on the superhighways. I'm hoping for the same sensation of quickly zooming up to the orbits of massive full scale planets in a much better game (E:D).

So we won't be able to jump directly to massive bodies like planets, only stars - even in system?

Well in general yes but we're thinking a more nuanced system is required to allow jumps to significantly isolated and huge masses that for the most part just means a systems star but can include jumping to binary stars, or isolated gas giants etc.

Ah fair, enough - that does make more sense. It just seemed a little arbitrary confining it to just stars.

Thanks Mike.

Very old thread :)

It makes lot of sense though, because micro jumps always felt stacked on after introducing FSD. Can't wait to see it in action!

What's the logic behind not allowing in-system micro-jumps?

Hey Mike, aren't you using this method for each systembox ? (just like asteroids the game for example)

btw, i am happy that finally we have some infos about the travel thingy.
:D

Elite is about the journey, not the destination. With a point to point jump you skip over any potential game play where as supercruise can provide opportunities for encounters and exploration.

Nice to see FD coming around from initial micro jumps proposal :) This makes me more exciting with exploring and travel than anything else in game - and what we have already is so good.
