Go look
For what?
Can't tell you
Where?
In space
We can't find it
It's there
Well it's buggy af
Oh we didn't know, but don't look at game files
Hide the files better
I want you to discover things
What things
Can't tell you
Where are the things
In space
Space is huge
Have fun!
Are the things actually there this time
Can't tell you

Lol I'll just eat popcorn and play rust for now

I couldn't agree more actually...
It's not fun, it's killing the fun.

Ahh but the thing with treasure hunts is that you know theres something to hunt for.

Lets say you have a 1000 acre park here on earth. And you hide a £1000 bar of gold on the park and tell people it's there. You would get a huge response and lots of people looking. Imagine what would happen after these people had been looking for a week digging up the whole park and you said.. actually there's nothing there? Quite a few angry people.

Imagine another scenario.. There's a park with nothing there. How many people do you get searching the park just randomly incase there's something there? Well there's metal detectorists but they are few and far between.

Exactlly...

This is what games like this are designed for. Huge area, ships designed purely for exploration, rare things to find.

Plus after a hugely stressful day at work just sitting on a planet, watching a ringed gas giant and listening to the music just really gets those stress levels down.

One more scenario: There's a park and an article in a local newspaper (which subsequently get reprinted and goes semi-viral on the internet) which hints that there's £1000 bar of gold buried there. When the original journalist (a large bearded gentlemen who's very well respected) is questioned further he gives nothing away but nor does he deny the existence of the bar of gold.

Lots of people start digging. After a while some people go home. But others keep digging. :D

It's much more likely that it's an organically grown machine with no sentience...

I'm pretty sure whoever made them won't be happy that we're shooting them to bits, but we don't have much choice in terms of progressing the story forward.

Also I don't think they're sentient, just a form of bio-mechanical technology.

Maybe so.. I doubt if it would have made much difference, they were always going to get blasted.

As for progressing the story - it's going to progress one way or another. I don't think Frontier is going to fire the "alien storyline team" if we didn't shoot & harvest the barnacles.

Don't forget the next scenario:

Someone spreads the rumor of a 1000$ gold bar hidden in a 1000 acre park.
A smart and slightly drunk guy, who overhears the original story told by the
founder of said legend, simply pulls out his gun, threatens the founder and forces him
to walk with him to the exact location(s) of the hidden stash.

Then he forces said founder to dig up the treasure with his bare hands,
while sadistically watching.

Aye they probably wouldn't. But since its kinda obvious that's what they want us to do (CG), the majority of the player base is going to do it, and the story will progress in the way they want it to.

I don´t think so. We have a couple of bugs now, and who really knows what we are missing here.

All we really need is a posting like:

"Hey Commanders, you can be sure that we have implemented a storyline regarding that barnacle-stuff, and you can be sure it is working cause we triple-checked it. And yes, it´s YOUR choice, we don´t have to trigger something manually, its already there - its all in the commanders hands."

Thats all I need to continue. Otherwise I will not waste my time, sorry.

Theory, The Barnacles are not growing out of the dirt, they are buried, and are slowly becoming unveiled via erosion. There is something big under the middle part. Bio-mechanical in composition hence the alloy's. An Alien ship? The fingers grow pods which eventually launch the UA's as a homing signal?

or crashed landed on a planet and have been dormant for who knows how long. The UA's have been sent to awaken whatever it is??

Noooooo.... this is what the tinfoil hats are for, so we don't automatically do what The Man wants us to do. They want us to destroy, to kill, to oppress. Let's make friends with alien life, resist our violent urges sheeple!

Ah, sod it. How much are they offering at Obsidian?

Well, we now have a Community Goal to deliver meta-alloys to Obsidian Orbital. The only way to get them is from Barnacle sites, by shooting the spikes. There's no other option.

Palin wants to conduct research on the meta-alloys and I'm guessing once the goal is complete more light is going to be shed on the whole situation and the story will progress forward.

It really doesn't look like we have much of a choice, if we want to progress forward then we must complete the Community Goal.

By all means there could be something else to discover and people can go ahead and look. But I'm betting a fair few credits that completing the Community Goal will move the story forward.

Haha I'm not sure but as with with other goals they'll be contribution rewards. I've not been in game to check yet though.

That´s not true!

(I mean... I dont believe it).

I realize the question is somewhat rhetorical, but currently 91k or thereabouts. ;)

It was rhetorical, but if I were to hypothetically head over to Obsidian, I could make a metaphorical fortune.

Good to know. Not that it has affected my moral stance here on this issue at all. Nooo, not at all.

I'd agree with that if we knew that there was stuff to be discovered and that it will actually show up. Having stuff not spawn half the time (ie barnacles not spawning in solo) is half the problem. The other half is that sometimes it's hard to believe that it's not all empty space and your just saying go look for something just to keep us busy while you make stuff to put in it.

Just create your own private group and use that. Sheesh.

Edit: I mean, I know there are some issues with solo perhaps; but that said, there are enough people saying 'I've found them in solo' to suggest that it's not completely broken. When I couldn't find one at particular known spawn point, I just moved on to the next one and usually found one there instead.

If you don't want to do it, that's cool - but there's plenty of people who still do.

No, no and just no :D

What would this bring to the game other than giving people who can't be bothered to do anything unless they know they're going to get rewarded for it, some kind of impetus to play the game? Michael has also said earlier in this thread that the Barnacles are just part of the story, not the solution, do you need more than that?

Maybe I'm wrong, but what exactly are you all taking part in this enterprise for exactly? I haven't taken part in the whole of the UA affair, but I've been watching it from the beginning (mainly for the hilarity of the threads) The thing that strikes me the most is that since Horizons has been released and newer players have joined the game and more have been enticed by the Barnacles, the amount of help and clearly defined guidelines that have been requested has gone up massively. It's not just here, in fact it is more obvious in the last couple of Treasure Hunts that have taken place. The thing I personally enjoy most about the Treasure Hunts and this endeavour is the hunt and batting ideas around each other trying to come up with possible solutions with which we can solve or advance the story.

Slow down there cowboy.

I am not requesting hints or clues.. but simple confirmation that there IS something more in game. If they dare, they can even state there is more in game per story arc if they so choose to. Official confirmation would quell much of the dissent and dissatisfaction. You say that you like how the "Treasure Hunts" promotes ideas and theories. Good for you. Now consider how much greater the energy and engagement from the community would be if they understood that there IS something more to pursue, rather than wait for the Devs to progress the next story.

Confirmation does not equate to hints.

The Anatares storyline; is there more to it? Or should I just wait for the next Galnet story.
The UA storyline.. is there more to it? Or should I just wait for the next patch and cryptic hint on the forums?

I don't want to know what is out there to be found.. I just want to know there IS something to be found.

I think anyone delivering meta alloys all over the place right now should change tack and put all their efforts into taking them to Obsidian. This will be how the stations get fixed - Palin needs to understand how the meta alloys stop the rot, so that it can be replicated and used on the other stations.
