UAs, Barnacles & More Thread 5 - The Canonn

total delivered is currently an amazing 45,000t in 2.5 days, unfortunately with only 4.5 days left at the current rate it doesn't look like first tier will be completed
Having ground my way through one 32-tonne load for the CG, I have no interest in repeating the experience. FDev's main achievement with this CG has been to take a major new element of the game, and many peoples' first sight of alien life in the Elite universe, and turn it into something dull, monotonous and arduous.

A couple of questions occur

Has anyone managed a detailed study of the noise the barnacles make?

And since I just landed at one at night... what the heck as the blue flecks pouring off the barnacle and its spikes?

Bill

<<debating whether to run back to a nice safe HAZ-RES instead of hanging about Maia :(

Theres always a chance Pallin will have success early in his research. He will have enough samples to experiment with.

Say its like playing the lottery, if its a million to one chance, buying a million tickets should but may not give a win. Could be many wins could be none even with a million more but a 1:1 chance of the right sequence.

If it is 250,000 ton for tier 1 and that triggers a start of a cure to the tech plague, with 40k tons already surely a minute miracle could happen and Pallin finds a cure with the first 40k samples, almost a 1/12 chance,
Would take a lot of Luck and a nudge from FD i thinks/

Tin Foil Hat Time! Apologies if this has already been stated but I wasn't going to read all those posts.

I believe the number 6 is associated with the barnacles. The barnacles have 6 sides, the meta-alloy mission has a time limit of 6 days and 6 hours. Now I'm hearing the estimate for the meta-alloy CG completion is 6M tons. Coincidence? Probably! ;)

Actually if you buy a million tickets, and each has a different combination of numbers, and you had a million to one chance of win, one of your tickets will for sure win.

Hi, relatively new and first time posting. I was going to poke around the Hind nebula, see what I see, since there were hints about other nebulae and this one's tiny. I just spotted a free-floating UA in HIND SECTOR DH-L B8-1. Is this outside 'the shell'? Unfortunately... I did the stupidest thing imaginable and while looking at the Navigation panel to check my system... hit the boost button destroying the UA! So, can't do any testing to see if it points at Merope. I don't have Horizons (yet), so can't check for barnacles.

Sorry, I jumped the gun on that one. Got all excited by my first UA where I wasn't even expecting one. I checked and it's 143 LY, right in the shell. So much so, that I found a second one immediately in the same system and can confirm it points at Merope.

Probably a stupid question, but the lat/long stuff is aching my head.

People say, "from the Anaconda wreck, go North/Northeast for barnacle [X]" but as far as I can see, the compass is set to 0-360 degrees with no directional markings. Am I blind? Are we using the convention that 0=North, 180=South, etc?

Any answer would be appreciated and quit me nibbling on my fingers in distress because I also seem to be affected by the missing barnacle thing :(

Mate, I've been looking in many a nebula on my way to the core, and so far nothing. I would like to think there are barney's out as far as I am, but I think it's a bit of a lost cause. Plenty of nav beacons and crashed ships though...

North/northeast would be along a course of about 022. Northeast is 045. So north by northeast would be about half that or 022.5

North = 0, +lat

east = 90, +long

south = 180, - lat

west 270, - long

Yes, but Galnet is not some sort of infallible encyclopaedia of ED lore, it's part of the story. So just because FD accepted an article for Galnet doesn't make it correct or true. In fact we can't even rely on FD created articles on Galnet being correct or true as it's entirely likely that FD will plant misinformation on Galnet when it suits their story. The difference between FD and player articles on Galnet is that FD articles almost certainly advance the story, while player articles simply fit into the story.

...and in the case of this article, they even went to the trouble of creating a second Palin piece in which he specifically rebuffs the concerns raised in the player article.

It would help if the compass appeared while in orbital cruise.

Indeed. Between my SRV flying in low planetary orbit and a completely frozen Python hanging 2km above the planet, both of which I eventually managed to sort out, plus the problems with barnacles spawning at all and the fact that navigating to a set of coordinates in orbital cruise without a heading indicator is profoundly irritating, I got as far as collecting 10 and decided to cash in and leave before I started hating myself and the game.

Wasn't all bad though, I was cruising over Merope 5C and found a POI so I landed to check it out. Scanned the data point and then... well you know when you get that feeling the game is telling you to do something...?

Think I need to work on the landings a bit though. I'm still kicking myself for not flying the Python over in front of them because I'm sure I would have cleared it :D

If anyone is near Coalsack, I found what I think is an excellent candidate planet for barnacles based on where we've found them so far.

Musca Dark Region OY-Q B5-12 1
High metal content, .0009 earth masses, orbits an M star at 19Ls, surface temperature 373K, no volcanism.

If I didn't know better, I'd think I were on the planet with the crashed anaconda and barnacles. Very similar features.

Hah. I'd guess he/she means if you buy 1 million tickets across several draws. Obviously - as you say - if you buy a ticket for each possible combination for an individual draw, you win.

You know, the barnacles are sort of ramp-shaped from a certain angle themselves... I think they're just a bit too steeply inclined to work though :/ That said, if one were to spawn at the right orientation, on ground already sloping upward enough....

Hmmmm very sneaky I was trying to get to NGC 246 the skull nebula ... but ended up heading towards NGC 2467 Skull and Crossbones (still quite a ways away)... That whole measure twice axiom folks ...well im on my way anyway

NGC 246 (Skull Neb) is supposed to be centered on BD-12 134 but isnt ... doesnt look like i could reach it anyway :p
