Astronomy / Space Largest Solar System Discovered


I'm thinking never or at least not for a long time.

As I understand it, changes to star systems (including adding new ones) requires a server side release so at the very least it will need to wait for 2.0.5 (or whatever).

It has been requested countless times for the galaxy to be crowd editable by the community (subject to review before release of course) or something similar where real scientific discoveries can be added into the game quickly thus enhancing the idea of ED being a good Milky Way simulation.

Still only 1/10th the distance to Hutton ;)


I got it to be 1/2 actually, have I done something wrong? I got 1 trillion kilometres to be about 3.3 million light seconds. Hutton is over 6 million. Note that Hutton is not around a planet at that distance from the star, but close to a star that is a greater distance from the main system's star.

Actually, no. My maths says it is 2.5 times smaller than the Hutton run.

Hutton is 2,081,420,000,000 Km out (0.22ly)
The new solar planet orbital size is estimated to be 140 x Pluto (5,900,000,000 km on average) = 826,000,000,000 Km

Therefore the new planet orbital size is 2,081,420,000,000 / 826,000,000,000 = 2.52 times smaller than Hutton is from the nav beacon.

I take that with a grain of salt.

I mean seriously, scientists aren't even sure if there is another planet at the outside of our own solar system, so how do they really think to know the size of these syst systems? its roughly some esitmated calculations without much proof.

Never heard of the planetary transit detection method?
It works great to observe planets in other systems, but not in our own system...

My bad - I forgot to multiply the ~9.8 trillion km in a light year by 0.22
 
It would be quicker to travel to the above world than a comparable distance to Hutton, since it's just a gas giant without a star nearby, hence less to slow down the FSD engine.

It works great to observe planets in other systems, but not in our own system...

I always love reading about these techniques. They'd make great detectives.

Of course, there's probably always a large element of uncertainty. They never really are directly detecting the body, rather inferring its existence from minor anomalies in its surroundings, and it's difficult to be certain there is no other possible/probable cause.

Actually that report says that both star and planet were observed independently, so they didn't use the transit method. The "planet" must be big enough to generate its own light.

Solar System
Our system, the planets, and other objects orbiting Sol.

Star System
The stars orbiting each other in one system.

Planetary System
The planets and other objects orbiting another sun.

Actually, I just thought the distance stated is a trillion km and a light-second is about 300,000km (based on c being around 300,000km/s) and went from there :D. Seemed easier to compare it to distances as they are given in game.

Indeed. I remember, many years ago, my lecturer for "Stellar Properties" being very annoyed at the fact that the term Solar System was being used to describe other star systems.
