News on in-system travel

Rooms in space was what we had before supercruise... the lack of supercruise between star systems is a tiny, tiny sacrifice in comparison. While it would have been nice, for completeness, we can fly anywhere in any star system, and insta-travel between any star system and another... Really, compared to the original plan of a few POIs in each system that you jumped between, what we have now is incredible! If you feel boxed in with that much space I'd hate to see the size of your house! ;)
No you're right it's defo getting better all the time... it's just one more checkbox short of perfect, along with unrestricted speed and full relativity.. most folks most of the time won't even know what they're missing..

And IF my home is modest, my mind is a vast yawning chasm of unconstrained freedom, 30 - possibly 40 ft across. With white walls to make it seem bigger. And also because i never had much visual imagination. Could also probably do with a tidy up. But it's mine, and i can do what i want with it. The illusory nature of 'free will' notwithstanding. But even if it's the one doing what IT wants with me, i still get to pickle it most evenings. If it IS me doing it, and not it to me. I should probably put some pictures up.. hic.

Why ignore? Go ahead and investigate, and if their truly in distress then its easy pickings :D. Of course, if they are worth the time.

Id be too scared it was an ambush. Imagine jumping to a distress beacon to find a lonely miner half dead. But really. There are dozens of ships lying in the shadows of the asteroids with most of their ship modules turned off. Then suddenly...Contacts...Everywhere....*shivers*

I suspect when I use the FSD to approach a planet I will end up parked in low orbit with the planet wizzing below me. The real problem here is not the orbital instance as such, but how do I get on the planet? The speeds of 200+ m/s are nowhere near enough to deal with the situation. I honestly have no idea how they are going to deal with planetary takeoffs and landings, and ballistic hops around the planet. I expect to make the London to New York run at the speed of a ballistic missile, and with much the same trajectory.

Will be interesting to see the police come out in their Vipers to chase you down for busting all the windows in London when you go supersonic.

Surely there will be some types of restrictions near populated areas on planets regards to at least staying sub-sonic. It would be reasonable to say certain classes of craft would also be prohibited from flying around the rooftops or loitering to get a view of a penthouse. In central systems I can't imagine it being legal to float around the outside of a space-station just as you please. There should be a minimum distance requirement and approach allowed only along the docking port path. I still like the old idea of dots or moving squares in the HUD (which should be able to be shut off) outlining the flight path required by local authorities when near stations (and starports/cities in a couple of years).

Ambush would certainly be a potential issue, as well as other players responding to the call. Hmmm, what would stop you from teaming up with the other player or players and just robbing the disabled ship?

Great, now I won't want to use a distress call...

As I said somewhere else...

Respond to the beacon, then tease / wait until the poor sap runs out of oxygen, or eject.

Free piñata

:D
