UAs, Barnacles & More Thread 6 - The Canonn

funny how a corp is offering more money then the feds? makes you wonder who really wants to know the truth!

This is kind of what I was thinking. I've long suspected Hudson was involved somehow - I think he knew Winters would not be popular enough to beat him in an election and that he wants to find the wreckage first so he can cover it up...

What did you find?
Also, is the barnacle placed in such a way that this always is in view like this. Even with the spin of the planet?

I've not yet been to the other side of the planet but one that was further north actually had it visible just above the horizon (definitely not looking straight up at it).
I'm assuming (I'd need another couple of barnacle trajectories to confirm) that the spires line up to point toward a place on the planet, rather than into space.

To confirm the "centre" of Pleiades Sector JC-U B3-2 1, we'd need someone near 23.1717, 94.0988 or 21.9135, 96.9802 to verify that their barnacles point almost due West and the one at -57.8318, 107.4311 should point roughly North West.
-21.27, -85.61 should point East North-Easterly but I wish we had one with 33+, -xx.xx so we could get a nice South Easterly line as that would pretty much prove the barnacle focus point on the planet and the next experiment could really begin.

Felicia Winters is a corp girl right? wonder if she has links to Daurtu Jet Comms PLC
Hudson vs Winters CG?

Winters is ex Sirius Corporation. I would not put it past them to use a front corp. to collect wreckage. Core Dynamics is another suspect, but it would be surprising if they went against Hudson.

All fed politicians have corporate connections. It's the way the federation works. In the last election, Core Dynamics beat Sirius Corporation.

Palin finally talks and there is a race for SS1 wreckage. The ball is starting to roll now.

I'm afraid I won't be racing anywhere. Not until I am absolutely positive that whatever I'm looking for is actually going to reliably spawn in whichever mode I'm playing at the time.

These will be in space like the Antares CG, so that should not be a problem. The fact that the most effective way to gather the wreckage, is to log off and on until your hold is full is another matter.

Did anyone notice that the meta-alloys themselves emit sparkles like the barnacle while on their spikes? They are emitting the sparks in the direction of their growth and not randomly like the UAs do.
Can somebody confirm this, or am I victim to barnacle burnout madness?

I haven't noticed what you said about the sparklies, but I have noticed the misty stuff seems to come directly from the meta-alloy pods more densely than overall (or at least it appears that way to me).

I think you're right (AFAIR, not at home computer right now), and you're definitely not going crazy. Ia, Ia, Cthulhu fhtagn.

Just noticed this new sticky thread. Thought it might be of interest - something might be around now or soon...

Hey guys,

Some of the eagle-eyed amongst you may have noticed that there have been a few reports of compromised carrier signals in local news bulletins.

Keep an eye out for these on your travels as they may lead you to something of interest. ;)

Mysterioulsy yours,

Zac

Also, this thread nearly went an hour without a post... rather strange in these times :D

This is a great idea. To do list:

Find software where we can draw continuous lat and long on a globe (also bear in mind that some planets are so small they're not proper spheres)
This will not do anything as fancy as plotting a course on a globe, but should still be pretty helpful: http://www.geomidpoint.com/destination/

I think we can get a good approximation of whatever planet we are on by using the "user defined ellipsoid" setting and adding the planet radius (taken from the system map) to both the equatorial radius and polar radius fields.

It should at least allow us to take some start coordinates and a bearing, decide a distance, and figure out what the target coordinates will be after travelling that distance.

Intersection of two paths given start points and bearings

Interesting. Here are a few more tools I came across that can take two positions/bearings and plot their intersection:

http://www.movable-type.co.uk/scripts/latlong.html (partway down, under "Intersection of two paths given start points and bearings")

Can't tell if its just me, but is anyone else seeing the green glow at the base of barnacle being brighter and flickering?

Nice finds Cmdr!

Edit: Actually, I'm out of rep. To make it up here's a full formation salute.

By the by, does anyone have any tips or techniques for more easily finding new barnacles that aren't yet published on the spreadsheet? I've been flying along the night side at ~1km altitude, aiming ~30' down and looking for the green glow, but haven't found any new ones yet. Is it better to land and use the SRV wave scanner? Will new ones even spawn while in flight?

Not sure about new one's spawning in flight, also with the bug still being around, it's hard to judge if it's you doing something wrong or the netcode, but all sites i found so far have been in-flight. I do approach the search similar though. 30-45°ish degrees, sometimes even 90° (using upwards thrust in that case). If you are using track-ir or similar going upside down is an option too - if an asp you'd have a nearly screen filling view and if you are feeling really crazy you can even turn the Tr.-IR by 180° giving you an 'upside down is up' panorama view of the area you search. I lasted for about 5mins in that mode until i had to take a break.. uh, maybe not too effective:) I also prefer going for unusual terrain features, canyons and the like. Unknowns found so far? One. Ahem. I blame it on the bug :D

Going in an SRV seems a lot slower and the terrain might start to become trouble soon or interrupt your search altogether - but yeah i hadn't thought about the spawn chance. It's just not too comfy driving while you can fly.
