As we make it to Waypoint 5 in NGC 6357, I present another stop-frame animation of the journey towards the nebula.
61 frames from 74 jumps covering 1600 ly.

Don't worry we are actively mapping which planets have them so that you won't need to waste time searching.
Ah. So I could go with my 32LY build, and you guys would be providing maps to get people the resource as we went along? Nice!
*goes off to make join request on the request thread*

Please only do that sort of thing in SOLO. The landing zone may be clear of other CMDRs when you start your antics, but other CMDRs may spawn in at any time.

I'm increasingly convinced that for this expedition I only want to play in groups that have rules against this sort of stunt flying.

Calling the scientific approach antics and stunt flying! :)
Yet duly noted, wouldn't want to crush a buggy that happens to drive underneath. Set ground level +200m.

Anyway what's a max safe speed to approach the LZ?
Even with a calculated 'drop' to the ground, the last 40 meters are at sub 20 m/s. It's nothing like buzzing the LZ at 240 m/s.

+1

Please tell me you're going to do this all the way to Beagle Point and make one big movie of it.. pleeeeasse :D

Funnily enough, my wife said much the same thing this evening! :)

The only downside is the extra time it adds to the jump sequence to get away from the star's glare. I'm averaging 700ly/hr right now with jump, scoop, scan, checking shineys and increasing the distance before taking the shot then jumping.
What I'll probably be doing is taking a shot before the jump every 3rd or 4th system since the distances are going to start stretching from this waypoint onward.

Nothing about the Scientific Approach... they are talking about the guys messing around and actually trying to do Air Show style stunts over the LZ's. View the video a few posts above. For you, you arent doing much more than landing so I dont think it was about you.

Ah, I've now watched the unfortunate video, bad timing on my part.
I guess some air show rules should be in place, not above or in line with the landing zone. Or better a separate group for filming stunts. People will still want to do this kind of stuff, although I guess that group will thin out after a while.

Servers are still down :/

OK, quick question:

What happens when you are parked up in a Private Group and then switch to Open to say hallo, or visa versa. I am assuming that the server will take other CMDR's positions in account and spawn me safely away from any obstacles or is it a crap-shoot, ie I land in Zenith's lap, his wife catches him in an awkward moment, he spills his tea and shorts his keyboard shortly after getting slapped by said wife and thereafter spontaneously combusts, taking me and three other CMDR's with him........

Please tell I assume correctly.

This is actually the main reason that I only logout or switch between open and group while flying in free space. I've heard of people logging in and inhabiting the same area before. I don't want it to happen to me.

Frankly, it's beyond me why anyone would be doing low altitude, high speed passes over other CMDR's at landing sites. If risking own destruction only, then who cares, but risking other CMDR's damage or destruction is unacceptable. Serious time & effort is being spent here, do not jeopardize it by folly or idiocy.

He couldn't show off in front of an empty audience though, could he? :p

But seriously, I agree and would prefer people stopped performing those stunts in instances with other players, now that the first part of the journey is behind us! (I was in the same instance but took off before the crash, just saw a few of the successful attempts)

For daredevil pilots out there, right before the server crash I tested out my formula for an optimal free fall landing at WP5. After checking the landing spot was clear! I went back up to 1.16 km, calculated I needed to reach a free fall speed of 88 m/s before turning FA back on again, and touched down at 4 m/s, 26 seconds later. Perfect landing. (All executed while level)
I don't know if it was you but i saw yesterday an Anaconda land at 2m of my nose (without impact on shields or anything), and then start to fly up straight, not having responded to hails or questions about what was going on. It seemed hard to get contacts, maybe the servers were already acting up (was at around 12 UTC).

I'm not saying you took undue risks (if it was even you), but i still logged out because i was a bit worried :p

Just had a couple of weird things happen.
I had to logoff last night before the meetup at Waypoint 5 while I was on my approach.
This morning I spawned ~250km above the landing site and thought why bother with SC, I'll just fly down in normal space. After a few minutes I hear "Warning: Temperature critical. Taking heat damage."
I panicked slightly and deployed a heatsink. Should have just taken the damage, really. I can restock my AFMU, but not my sinks. Afterwards, the heat slowly started to rise again. When it passed 60%, I entered SC and it went back down again.
Then after I landed, as soon as I deployed my SRV it said "Warning: 50% fuel".
No problem, I thought. then I saw this:

As you can see, I have plenty of materials, so what's up with that?
