Broke and Miserable in a Beautiful Game

...yeah so forked out the nearly 300$ for the beloved Alpha and spent almost 8hrs trying to earn me some good ole credits...there doesnt seem to be much in the way of doing this...no mining, dogfighting is a joke in a stock sidewinder and scoopin up the occasional "lost" canister took hours and yeilded very little (also got me blasted to hek!) so im frustrated and broke and was hoping others have some advice for a newb sap

PS- Nearly wet my pants when I experienced this very polished Alpha..just awesome...coming from SC I became accustomed to being underwhelmed..ELITES BACK! :D

I'm Premium Beta, so I only have access to the single player combat scenarios at the moment while waiting for the beta to start. Just shooting stuff is frustrating knowing what the scope of the final game will be, but I still love just flying about. Dogfighting in the sidewinder ain't so bad, it is a small craft and seems to out-manoeuvre the Cobra MK-III, I'm still crap at combat with those bloody beam lasers though!

Good Luck, I sure hope I can play with you when beta arrives :)

I guess I COULD tell you about an existing exploit to gain lots of money fast in the current alpha.

Axis,

It can be done.....I know have the cobra all items available and 50K credits extra...takes patience...I have 1017 kills...11 of which are human and have only died 32 times (5 of those by game crashes) average of 31 kills per death. Oh sorry CMDR Stormbringer/CMDR Sir Jones and Alpha Backer 57335....it was nothing personal.... Keep at it Axis.

I just thawt I was doing something wrong bcuz after 8+ hours I only had 14K and lost it when I used it to upgrade my ships guns, only to be destroyed in a dogfight bcuz I didnt relize you had to assign the new weapons a priority..I was blasted by a cobra while I panicked....BTW nice to see so many replies......even if I dont get the easy answers I was hoping for , LOL.

Welcome to the alpha, and don't discount the idea that YOUR dogfighting is a joke :p!

The first few kills are hardest, with those piddly pulse lasers... I strongly recommend that you invest in some gimballed weapons. You get 100% of the money back on trade in, so don't be afraid to experiment!

Federal bounty is where I spend most of my time (PvE); much of the rest of the time is spent in contested space... more risk and more reward. Sometimes I poke my head into the asteroid field to see if there are any spare cannisters, but haven't really pirated.

Plus it's worth going throught the single player stuff if you haven't already to get acclimatised :)

Yeah, it sucks.

I just shut it down after playing all day.

Took all day just to work up enough credits to finally buy the (cobra mk3) mk2 cheese wedge.

That's when I found out you get nothing in return for your old ship/gear, it just disappears.

So I head out with one puny fixed mount on the mk2 cheese wedge and grind up enough to buy a usable weapon.

Only for my mk2 cheese wedge to go ape ^%$^ when I try to dock.
Spinning and rolling and nothing I can do to get it to stop as I ping pong around the port until it explodes.

Oh good, now I get to start all over from scratch because I don't have enough credits.

Screw it.

The crashes and bugs are one thing, screwing me out of an entire days progress with a crappy mechanic like that is not acceptable.

You might currently get nothing for the old ship, but if you do sell the weapons you will get full credits, even as the panel says 0 credit (bug).

So, sell weapons, then ship to at least recoup weapons costs (you get full cost/refund - also a bug).

Don't buy a new ship until you have enough money left over to pay for a couple of round of "insurance". ;)

Advice from me is stick with your basic free sidewinder until you raise 8500 credits. Stick to the federation starship defence unless its bugged dont worry about dying its free. Then when you have the money may take you a bit though but good fun.
Then get 2 gimballed beam lasers and watch those pirates fry. They almost seem too good for the price. Not as much fun granted but you may find your hand strain getting a bit better.
And oh before you buy the cobra make sure you have enough in reserve for the insurance in case anything goes wrong otherwise like me you will be broke and carrying out your own advice.

Ps i forgot to say after upgrading your ship jump out and repair when your ships hull gets low its cheaper.
Pps 14000 is not poor i hung around for a week trying to break the 6000 mark.

And .. Dont dis the sidewinder im etremely fond of mine and not really sure whether i want to upgrade the bigger cargo hold would be great for alpha 4 but in game maybe i could transport organs in my sodewinder or something.

You should have read my cautionary tale. I dont think its bugged in england we like our rags to ritches and back to rags again tales its very ensian !

Concur... Save up and get dual gimballed class 1 beam lasers!
Then during day if you can, log on to federation bond and fry as many as you can. Alternatively contested space is good, but pick "Federation" as you get more credits per kill (500).

When you have taken too much damage hyperspace to the asteroid field, take a glance around for floating canisters, grab any lying around then back to Zelada.

Don't spend too long in the asteroid field, it's supposed to be a quick check for free credits.

Rinse repeat.

Insurance is around 1k for the gimballed loadout, so remember to flee and get repairs so as to not lose your gains.

Also for now don't hold down the fire button for the beam lasers, keep clicking the fire button, there is a bug meaning they currently do more damage this way.

it has a steep learning curve but the more rewarding hits / kills are! and you get used to it - but I fiddled around with controls a fair amount of time till I settled with sth. comfortable.

I have crashed out and lost all credits, I stupidly sold my cobra after buying it to get NOTHING back.....

I have used Federal Bond to make that money back, the nice thng in that scenario is they don't attack you unless you shoot them.

So you can sit and shoot one, let it come to you and it makes it easier to destroy them.

Also I like Free for all and Disputed Space for quick money making.. but it is likely another player will come in and take you out while you're earning.

Alpha 4 will probably add a lot of relief for earning credits in the form of proper trading, and hopefully should resolve the issues with ships having no trade-in value.
