Alpha 4 to be released in May?

But wasn't beta supposed to be more or less feature complete?

I got rather confused by that Michael message. I think what he meant that we will get 4.0 alpha build which will be used as release candidate for premium beta build 1.0.
I guess we will know when we get 4.0 release date and details about it, as promised, "shortly"
I can't decide if they are awful at communication or geniuses.
My understanding is as follows
30th May, Premium Beta peeps will get hold of the 1st beta build.
In keeping with what Michael said, Alpha backers will get THAT first beta build two weeks before on 15th May (ish)
As for Alpha 4, it's assumed that all the testing for that will be wrapped up and any bugs ironed out over a typical 4 week period for each Alpha phase in the past.
To make sure that fits with the early first beta build to Alpha , we could count back approx 4 weeks from the 15th to get an approx start date for Alpha 4, which is middle of next week.
I'd therefore predict an Alpha 4 release around the bank holiday weekend , or the week after that, simply because they need to get testing under way for Alpha 4.
I'd normally say that all dates are subject to change, but FD are marking a very large line in the sand as they've stated the Premium Beta being available on a specific date in the near future, something they've not done before.
FD usually do things on the hop simply because (up until now) they don't like committing to specific dates. That's why Thursday's freebie to Premium Beta peeps like me was such a (very welcome!) surprise. I am now busy trying out my x52 Pro stick and trackIR on the 1.1 tests.

Michael confirmed two things to me:
#1 alphas will get build which will serve as basis of premium beta first build in the middle of May (15th or 16th);
#2 After that alpha's exclusive window will be as long as required for show stopper testing, t.i. if everything allright, as small as 2 hours;

I can look up messages for this, I explictly asked him questions and he answered. I think he repeated this message over and over again. You can't really get it wrong.
I've spent enough time making software to know releases will be ready when they're ready, no real joy in playing guessing games even based on estimates. It's an unfortunate truth the market requires a deadline that often can't be met even when it's decided on.
Nothing harsh about that, you benefit from letting developers get it right and tight rather than rushing - I think the general high quality of what we've seen from the guys despite deadlines slipping speaks to that.
I'll be happy if they get halfway toward their ambitions for the game this year and are successful enough to iterate and improve it - all signs I've seen so far point to that being the case.

So the one point we would like clarifying is whether or not Alpha 4 is the Premium Beta candidate. If it is, then it follows that Alpha 4 is released around the 15th. If not, I'd expect it to be released soon, maybe before Easter.
This... I frankly can't see only two weeks testing on 'Alpha 4'... They are adding too much to not have a thorough test. Sure, I can see them opening up more for the beta and having to test that, but the trading mechanics and system travel... Only two weeks? Doubtful.
IME the two are far from mutually exclusive.
I'd say they are two different things. The main announcement says:
"The full Premium Beta will start on 30th of May 2014"
"The date and further details of Alpha Phase 4 will be announced shortly"
Even if we speculate that the premium build is made as an early release around the 15th May, there is enough there to say that these two items are different things.
I'd say Alpha 4 will be out within the week.
