Controls Template

I found I needed a document where I could keep track of what keys and commands I am using in Elite Dangerous. As it may be useful to others I have included it here. Please feel free to use, edit, etc as you wish. Not all the keys are the default bindings as I have a separate numeric key pad for my keyboard and have also bound keys to voice commands.

I am also using Voice Attack which works quite well depending on microphone and background noise. It is quite nice (for a while) to say "Deploy" and see your hardpoints deploy and then a voice say "Hardpoints deployed" (although in this example it isn't so good since there is not a separate key available to deploy and then 'undeploy')

Attached as an Excel 2013 file and PDF. If people would prefer it in MS Word I am happy to convert it.

I have also included blank versions of the template

note: Updated 2014/2/18 based on changes in Alpha 2.2

I have posted this in General rather than the Alpha sub-forum as I am sure there are some beta players who are wanting to start thinking about the controls etc.

First post updated with v0.6 of the control templates. These now reflect the new control grouping in Alpha 2.2

Let me know if you notice any errors

I think you really have something here! Elsewhere there is discussion about Oculus Rift and the obvious problem that in use, you are made blind to the keyboard (and the buttons on any joystick you use). I think I can memorise by feel, the 8 buttons on the Black Widow flight stick I have - but the keyboard is impossible! VoiceAttack seems a very neat way to get round this - and quite reasonably priced, at $8.00.

Would you like to join the discussion about Oculus Rift? Seems to me the way to go for an immersive experience, but somehow the 'blind keyboard' problem needs to be addressed and overcome.

ok i am having some meager problems with the Thrustmaster HOTAS WARTHOG hardware 11 & 23 so latest, and a set of pro flight peddles(work fine?) throttle works ok too but there is a problem with roll & pitch? try'ed setting it up using all the default's setting, but will not work on pull back or roll right?

voice attack works fine but would love to get trackIR working a bit better but still working on it.

any clues on why just me joystick is acting up?

yes i was playing the 1984 elite played it to death but did not like the new versions till now

Are you on the alpha build or the beta?

I can send you my TARGET script (and instructions) if you want it (best to PM me, I may miss a request here) - but I don't have pedals so can't really help with that bit. It sounds as if there's some odd conflict between the two.

yes it was a problem with more than 2 devices connected i have 7
HOTAS joystick, throttle,
pro flight joystick throttle peddles & switcher
trackIR 5

if i just use the WARTHOG its fine but has same buttons on throttle as joystick showing up, but it works.

Having just got Beta working on my computer, this is such a help to see this again. Thanks again, gonna make use of this.

I have updated the template made by TheWombat with Alpha 4.01 controls.
Also added the help text from the game and some more functionality.

This is based on the original template made by TheWombat. Big thanks to him for making the template available in the first place.

You can find the updated template here.

Don't worry about the preview that box.com forces upon you when you access the file. It doesn't look like that when you load it up in excel.

Thanks - WOMBAT & GIMI

I'm totally new at this programming and setting up and I must admit very daunting. So I would like to thank Wombat and Gimi on this latest update an I so so wish I was a younger lad wise to the gaming intrinsic nature that comes with games advancements.

Hope to learn from you's, I doubt also that I am the only one scratching their heads. infact there will def be a market for some intrepid person to teach auld greys... cheers guys... :D

PS what does focus mean in game an it's function?

I have been working on an app called EDTweak aimed at reducing the number of controls required for stick users.

The general idea is to allow the user to define Shift States so you can double up the functionality of buttons.

Currently it only supports shifting the behavior of the POV hat, but I may expand it in the future to cover all buttons.

I have designed custom code to allow you to fully control the UI panels through one button + POV hat, plus when not shifted I put in custom code to make sure diagonals work nice so you can use the unshifted hat for strafe like you do in this control set.

In addition, you can add user-defined shift states.
I include one for Power Distribution, but am now looking at how I can cram all the important controls onto one 8-button stick.

So here is what I am thinking so far:

UnShifted + Hat = Navigation in UI mode, thrust U/D/L/R outside UI.
UI Shift + Hat = UI operation (1/3/q/e) + TrackIR disable in UI mode.
Power Shift + Hat = Power Distribution (Up/Down/Left/Right)
Targetting 1 + Hat = Targ Ahead / Targ Nearest / Subsys L / Subsys R
Targetting 2 + Hat + Next Hostile / Prev Hostile / Next Ship / Prev Ship

So, I am left with 4 buttons, but of course I could have the proposed shift states affect those buttons too.

I currently use them for fire 1, fire 2, boost and flight assist.

So that leaves me with:
Deploy Heat Sink (<Target 2> + Boost?)
Increase / Decrease Sensor Range (<Target 2> + Fire 1/2?)
Silent Running (<Target 1> + Boost?)
Next / Prev Weapon Group (<Target 1> + Fire 1/2?)

Do I really need quick access to these?
Reverse
Deploy Hard Points
Lights
Eject Cargo

So that leads me to believe that yes, I could probably cram everything I needed onto an 8-button stick, though it would require more coding.

Comments / suggestions welcomed.
Oh, and I currently only have the Combat Alpha. Are there more keys I would need in later versions?

Many thanks to TheWombat and to Gimi for this. This is just what I was looking for :D

I am not sure if it possible but it would be really useful if these resource posts could be stored in one area so newer (PB, etc) players such as myself could find them sooner rather than later as they are invaluable.
