Hehe, so I planned to catch up with you guys.
Im in a Graphite-painted Clipper with a Jumprange of 16ly+ (depending on fueltank)
See you guys at Waypoint 7 (Hopefully)

Hypothetically, if I was in the DW private group and decided to carpet bomb everyone I can at Beagle Point is there a penalty for that? I mean a FD penalty not just getting kicked from the group by the owner.

Just asking, as I would think that 1000+ pilots may contain a sociopath or two.

Agreed. And looking at the list of ships, there's a federal assault ship and corvette in there! It would be so easy to register and fly off by yourself with the intention of killing people at a later date. They'd now be merged in with the main group.

This took place in the private group. A griefer would be reported to FD as violating the group rules & tickets would be submitted to restore the lost/damaged ships & data.

That's good to know but would all the exploration data be restored? I don't see why the servers would normally save that.

Episode Two of our Distant Worlds segment is now airing on Radio Sidewinder, and you can also hear it on SoundCloud.

I made an announce post at Radio Sidewinder, and I used ProfessorMadman's awesome image of the Space Madness tower. (Hope that's ok!)

I plan to produce a new episode each week, on Fridays. Feel free to message me if you have specific news items related to the expedition that you would like to share, or if you would like to be interviewed.

Try not to blow yourselves up out there with all that hijinx!

Why not? The info is collected. Discarding it on the moment it is sold or destroyed would fill little purpose, since it is trivial to store this type of simple information.
It would make backups impossible & would make analyzing exploration data impossible for the devs.

Don't waste your time reporting it to FD, this is an private expedition. Report it to Erimus and myself and we will get them kicked immediately.

You can try reporting it to FD after that but it's highly unlikely they will restore your data because a player blew you up. That's not how the game works I'm afraid

It may be trivial to store this type of simple information but it all carries a cost when scaled up to many thousands of players

Why would they keep that data?

You have hundreds or thousands of commanders dying every day in the bubble who aren't exploring but just honking as they go about their business in the bubble. Unlike data which is sold and allows a commander to look at the system map and not be able to sell it again, exploration data lost when a ship is destroyed is useless. And even if the servers did keep the data, how long would they keep it for considering that it has no further use?

The server data will be backed up on a regular basis, but we can't expect that Frontier have developed the means to extract a single ship's exploration data from a large backup. This would be low priority.

Yep... Trolls have been trolling individuals at Sag A for over a year... and FD are seemingly happy with that. Infact trolls have been trolling individuals all over the galaxy, and FD are just as happy with that too it would seem... :)

As for trolling taking place in Distant Worlds, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see video footage over the next month or two of half a dozen ships (on the ground?) being destroyed by someone...

NOTE: *trolling* - This is my own personal description of the gameplay being demonstrated (exploited) by certain CMDRs and should not be confused with FDs official opinion of them, which is that they are playing the game as designed.

You know those guys that went BAM at WP05?
Then there's stacking like that at WP06.

Which bit of "Are you mental?!?" are you all having trouble with? :)
We're not even 10% of the way along the return journey and taking risks like that on a planet's surface.

It's one thing if I run the canyon between contact binaries or thread the needle between a planet and it's rings. It's only me that goes BAM if it goes wrong. These antics at waypoints run the risk of some terrible tragedy.
There is a big difference between what happened at WP 5 and the stacks we built on WP 6.
At WP 5 I put other ships at risk without thinking and they had no choice about it, read Newsletter#3 for my take on that (no need to flame or have a go, this has been discussed to death and I know I was in the wrong nor will it happen again).
On WP 6 everyone involved was a volunteer, knew the risks and we had 1 person coordinating things in order to prevent accidents.
There were no incidents that caused anyone to lose hull%, we all made the effort to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
At WP 7 we are going to attempt to create a DW shadow using stacks so watch this space.

If you or anyone else did that I would hunt you down in game for the rest of your life, not a hypothesis, a well known fact.

@erimus
Did you know that r4nger0 finally got home yesterday, in his normally style? Twitch feed had yesterday a recording of it. Rob

WOW, really? You mean just got home in Sneaky Pete from his original "crossing the galaxy in a Sidewinder trip"? If so, that's incredible - he's been out for like a year?

I remember watching the original r4nger0/Erimus meet-up live on twitch. One of my first truly extraordinary ED moments, it was like watching the moon landing or something :D

Haven't been following his exploits for quite some time. Is there a link to the recording of his arrival back home?

I had my ship destroyed while I was in my SRV at Maia/barnicle. You cannot target the attacker from the SRV so you don't know who it is. I tried to get back to my ship but what I should have done was dismiss it. I'd left it with 4 pips to shields and it took many plasma hits to destroy it lol. If I'd thought quicker I could have saved it. Or possibly just logged out (legitimately it would have survived the 15 seconds).

It is something to be aware of but not very likely I hope...

The difference being WP5 was 1.06g WP6 was 0.07g, which allows these sort of antics with minimal risk. Everyone in that tower had signed a virtual disclaimer. Personally I though it was brilliant, somehow something typically explorer like.

Separately to my personal aggravation, another Cmdr got interdicted about 5 jumps from SagA* this evening.

I'm presuming this was in open.

Stacks of ships are building, and so are the stakes as we get closer and closer to our final destination. If possible, please record your endeaveurs so we can enjoy deeply regret your demise, when your remains are consigned to the void along with all of your painstakeingly-over-many-months collected exploration data.

Popcorn and soda at the ready...
