Broke and Miserable in a Beautiful Game

Glad I found this thread, just started on the Alpha myself and have been banging my head against a brick wall for 2 days. Upgraded from premium beta cos I couldn't bare to wait any longer.

Still struggling, but thanks to those that have recommended the processes above, at least I've got some idea now!!

I'm not sure trying to treat the alpha like a proper full game is the best thing to do as it will always end in frustration.

Grinding cash when most of the economics are missing is not how the game will be intended. Then you'll soon have to start all over again when it is added.

Heck you can't play this yet like a full game, its a testing process. If you want a game please see if you can get your money back and come back later this year for a completed game at a reasonable price. Some of us are enthusiastically ticketing the bugs when our days work blows up, then enjoying restarting the process. If you wanted a game that won't wipe your progress you shouldn't be looking at pre-release crowd funding.

Frontier occasionally wipe our credits anyway because you can't take it with you into the next release.

I'm fully aware it's an alpha. Was just looking for pointers to help me progress a little as I don't confess to be a expert game tester, but I am excited about this game and want to get the most out of this phase so I can give constructive feedback.

Sorry to have wasted your time.

Not you dude, I think we are all replying to another post ;-) The person that said it was unacceptable to loose stuff because of bugs..in an Alpha test... Where we find and log bugs.

My bad, apologies.

Just in general, not anybody specifically. Enjoying the alpha is great, people paid good money for it, its just no good if someone finds themselves getting angry cos all their hard work has been lost because they have been trying to play the alpha like a proper game, thats to whoever finds themselves going down that route of frustration overtaking enjoyment.

And I'm not saying anyone in this thread, just if someone is reading and find themselves getting frustrated. Just to try to remember its a alpha and what they are getting frustrated over is a part of the game that isnt working as intended yet.

Just to add, everyone is doomed with these tests as we'll be experiencing quite a few wipes between tests, so don't get hung up on simple game loops at this time, no matter how frustrating and addictive they can be.

Having played a few other Alpha's, beta is where content and graphics star to really improve and I suspect we're all due for many more "wow" moments from here until release...:D

My Alpha's broke!!! (Electrical issues with my Romeo...)

Yeah, it sucks.

I just shut it down after playing all day.

Took all day just to work up enough credits to finally buy the (cobra mk3) mk2 cheese wedge.

That's when I found out you get nothing in return for your old ship/gear, it just disappears.

So I head out with one puny fixed mount on the mk2 cheese wedge and grind up enough to buy a usable weapon.

Only for my mk2 cheese wedge to go ape ^%$^ when I try to dock.
Spinning and rolling and nothing I can do to get it to stop as I ping pong around the port until it explodes.

Oh good, now I get to start all over from scratch because I don't have enough credits.

Screw it.

The crashes and bugs are one thing, screwing me out of an entire days progress with a crappy mechanic like that is not acceptable.

You're joking right?

Or are you really complaining that your alpha access is bugged and unstable?

You do know what an alpha game phase is, don't you? Because if you don't, you're in the wrong part of the woods son... ;)

Absolutely, as a beta subscriber, I'm currently using the alpha as a learning curve, I wont judge (much ;) ) until the completed game is published

I thought the stock Sidewinder was good enough for a free ship. It is entirely possible to kill an NPC Sidewinder in one shield cycle in it. True, gimbals make it easier but then learning the hard way is the Elite way.

...yeah so forked out the nearly 300$ for the beloved Alpha and spent almost 8hrs trying to earn me some good ole credits...there doesnt seem to be much in the way of doing this...no mining, dogfighting is a joke in a stock sidewinder and scoopin up the occasional "lost" canister took hours and yeilded very little (also got me blasted to hek!) so im frustrated and broke and was hoping others have some advice for a newb sap

....I just wanted to follow up for those newb players like me that found ED daunting at first...it wasnt until after a few days that I fully realized how to utilize power management efficiently (I was amazed at the level of custom control so far :) as well as subsystem targetting of the enemy!
Now Im making slow but steady coin and loving every minute of it!....as other players have said "Hang in there and it will pay off"...I now see that it will :)

I was going to say the same thing.

have fun playing and LEARNING, because that investment of time will come back full circle when the game is released to the public - you'll know the intricacies of the game while the NOOBS struggle. :p

There are no NOOBS in Elite, only the harmless

maybe we can get FD to include it, just for the lols :p

then make a list of things that qualify you to go DOWN in rank

ie, crash ship before clearing spacedock, down in rank.
flying into the sun whilst scooping fuel, down in rank.

I'm sure other people would have some ideas on what could cause a players rank to deteriorate. :p

Contested Space is where you can make the most money quickly. Yet you have to have a bit of experience flying as it is very easy to get 3 or 4 ships on your tail and thus it is key to balance when to flee with shield management and silent running in order to stay alive.

Combat Bond pays less but is very easy to make money due to only the ship you shoot coming after you. The other AI ships will usually focus on the Capital Ship.

Potato Belt only pays good if you are fortunate to find someone with a big bounty on them. Picking up cargo is only really worth if if you have a Cobra with its larger cargo bay but that can still be quite tedious.

Free For All is another good way to make money but is more dangerous due to unpredictability of every ship being a potential threat.
