Buying a second copy of Elite Dangerous

So for $20.00 CDN I can buy a second Commander, and then maybe add a lifetime pass when FD offers them again. So far so good, but then I asked myself if I really want to grind my way to Admiral and Prince all over again. Not really. What I really want is to be able to hot swap ships so even though I'm 40,000 LYs away exploring I can still pop into a CG if I want. If I could do that I'd buy four copies right now.

Multi-chars gives you freedom to do what you want, when you want to do it.

I have one at the edge of the galaxy exploring, another ranking up with Alliance and the last doing CG's. Works for me.

I have two commanders. One has amassed upwards of 1.4 billion in assets and credits, drives a Cutter to work (I can do you a sweet deal on slaves economic migrants) and has a garage full of ships.

The other is a peasant driving around in a beat up type-6 that is spending the entire time purely exploring (as in all credits gained will be from exploration alone).

This means I can be in two places at once. Which is pretty cool. Having a second commander in a single account would be swell, but I just don't think frontier has that as a high priority. There are all sorts of hurdles around rank (including navy) which makes it a bit pointless - apart from perhaps saving us some cash.

Having a second (or even third) commander is actually a lot of fun.

So exploration isn't that fun after all...

Now I see why this game has 1.3 million sold copies.

The inability to have multiple saves is one of the worst ways that the single player experience is compromised by having to make do with a multiplayer game where you never see other players, rather than having a proper single player game.

That's simply untrue, most if not all MMOs allow multiple characters usually at least 3 and sometimes as many as 5. Outside of MMOs games like World of Tanks give you multiple garage slots with the option of buying more.

There are a lot of good examples out there from other games. I came to ED after playing World of Warcraft for over five years. They allowed multiple characters on each account. It would be most beneficial if the good folks at FD would at least play the ten day trial version of the game. Take a look at what has worked well like the in game chat, guilds, player trading and yes player crafting. They even implemented a process where some things were not sellable, or were account bound. Those who take the time to study and learn from history are not doomed to repeat it.

2 x characters via 2 email addresses seems to work ok in 2.0 I remember having to download and install the game to 2 different locations for 2 different accounts in the past. With 2.0 I have been challenged for a verification code only once for each account on a single install. I wonder when this changed.

I use my 2 characters for very different things - whether political or objectives. One of my character is very pro fed, the other is a lower ranking scavenger would-be explorer. Exploration is the obvious thing to do with the 2nd account, fancy a faster pace just end the game and launch the 2nd account, sure beats travelling back 1000LY

Indeed, and most if not all single player games allow it too. I'm sure I can recall "because multiplayer" being given as the excuse reason for the lack of this in ED though. As long as people are actually prepared to buy additional copies of the game to compensate for this, I can't see FD hurrying to sort it out.

Too bad Elite ISN'T Single player or your point would be valid.

This is a great tip Simon, and something i would like to do. Could you, or anyone, tell me how to install the 2nd Cmdr on the same PC. Only have one drive, 1 partition (C: Drive). I understand when ED installs it has several 'Default' directories that it installs too? so how do you control the 2nd install to not interfere with the first install?

Thanks and Rep for Smiths121 (Simon)

I just have one cmdr through steam and the other from FD store. Different e-mail addresses. It just works.

Hello Cmdr Wasp (your scaring me!!!)

You need to 2 email accounts. The game is far more "family" friendly now compared to old.

Back in 1.x days (I had win 8) I used to use 2 x local PC accounts with local admin rights. I installed the game into each admin accounts area (\users\<nameof account\ed). This worked bit of a pain but it gave a unique "space" or set of files to each account - or email account. It avoided having to get a verification code each time I swapped accounts. It was based on advised from FD QA to one of my friends.

First week of Jan, my graphics card (680M) cooked itself so I purchased a new rig with Windows 10 (I'm a LINUX dude, so my gaming rig is solely for ED - and is laptop based). I thought I would have to do the same again. It is a bit of a hassle to set up (ED tracker in each account etc), so I did not bother. I played the game, and swapped characters popped the verification code in. I swapped back, expecting the need for a verification code - and was very surprised it just worked. Swapped back, again it just worked. Brilliant for me!!!!

As long as you have 2 email addresses you can have more than one character.

However store purchases such as skins or season passes are email/account specific.

My second character is new for Horizons - really enjoying the low level again (what you'll pay we 50K to 100K for an escape pod ...where do I sign up lol).

Hope you go for it and enjoy doing the things you cannot do with your established character.

Hope this helps.

:) , Don't be scared, my sting is not that bad ;)

Thanks for your instructions, i am gonna give this a go, as i fancy starting out again, but DON'T want to clear save, as i love my Wasp0 Character i have now. It will mainly be for Exploring, as i tried it and went out for a week, but i always felt as if i was missing what was going on back in the Bubble, CG's, Smuggling, missions etc etc, so i came back.

New Wasp0 will just go into the black!!

Thanks again, and if i could rep you again i would.
