SteamVR now support direct mode for the vive

http://steamcommunity.com/app/250820/allnews/#scrollTop=0

Extended mode remains for now - Needed to run Elite Dangerous currently with SDK .8.

However, the cliff is in view - unknown as to how long before this support is removed as obsolete as those functions are no longer needed with the new generation of video drivers (gameplayVR and liquidVR).

I do hope that it sticks around until SDK 1.0 is implemented in game...

interesting. i wonder if FD are going to hit the same issues with vive as they have with oculus rift then?

if so i can imagine a big "OHH F F S!" coming from frontier towers!.

I hope that Steam pulls extended mode support ASAP - FDEV really need a kick up the butt so they get to fixing their engine for direct mode VR compatibility rather than spouting excuses. The more crutches they have, the more they will use.

Sorry to anyone on Win 10 & RT 0.7/8... Personally I wouldn't have gone to Win 10 this early on any way, mostly to avoid the problems some of you are experiencing now.

Yes the sooner extended mode is consigned to the history books the better.

Maybe now FDEV will get the finger out and properly implement VR support.

Frontier is forced to use the SDK files given to them by Oculus. They are not rewriting Rift source code to work with Elite here. The villain is probably the Oculus devs changing things mid-stream and not passing or documenting those changes. You may as well blame Frontier for a stuck CAPS LOCK on your keyboard. Makes as much sense.

Oculus has issues with other game companies as well: https://forums.oculus.com/viewforum.php?f=42

I've gotta agree with peeps above- I think FD had an easier time because Vive was closer to OR Extended Mode in implementation (which in turn was an evolution of their 3D support for anaglyph etc) which later OR runtimes no longer have.

I'd imagine if Vive Direct Mode was the only method for Vive support going forward, any work by FD to support that would surely further OR Direct Mode support too.

We can only hope that if FD receive more help with support Vive, that this indirectly helps with OR implementation going forward.

Capitalize acronyms and initialisms.

An acronym is a word made up from the first letters of the words that make up the name of something.

Here are some examples:

NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration)
NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization)

An initialism is similar to acronym, but you do not read the letters as a word. Instead, you just say the name of the letters.

Here are some examples:

USA (United States of America)
VIP (Very Important Person)
NBA (National Basketball Association)
FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation)
ASAP (As Soon as Possible)
B&B (Bed and Breakfast)
CD (Compact Disc)

So acronyms and initialisms should be capitalized.

Examples:

Send over the contract ASAP.
You can get these songs on a CD.
NASA was established in 1958.
We're watching the NBA channel.

Perhaps you should brush up on your English skills prior to criticizing those who are using it correctly.

I didn't even mention Oculus - Both Oculus and Steam support Direct Mode VR now.... As I mentioned in my previous post, I hope Steam remove extended mode support in SteamVR ASAP as it's a crutch that in my opinion has been lent on too much by FDEV.
