Just ordered the tobii eyex

Mine is here and at first didn't quite want tp work in any USB port. Once it did at last, it quickly patched it's firmware and was ready. May still have to do a little fine-tuning with the settings, definitely have to set a hotkey to disable it, as it's a pain when in station menus. Combat with it is just great however, though in the asteroid belt I had to remind myself a few times that I was not quite going where I was looking. Looking forward to fly in CQC with it.

One little complaint though. The cable is very very stiff but not too firmly secured in the device. Slight movement can promptly kill the connection.

Had the same issue. They are sending me a new cable to test what is causing the issue.

Mine arrived this morning.

The calibration and Gaze Trace work fine, but in ED it's having no effect. I've tried turning Headlook mode on by default, changing the button for Headlook mode, switching it from Toggle to Hold etc., but nothing I do is having any effect in the game.

Anyone else having the same issue?

Have you installed Tobii InfiniteScreen Extension?

Could be a dry joint in which case it's not the cable but the device

You'll need to set the headlook x/y binds to the input of the device.

Well, if you check my previous posts I am not excluding this possibility. However, the easiest way to test it is to use a different cable. And as I have mentioned earlier it is very sensitive to the connection and cables used, so not all cables are compatible with EyeX. So I'll have to wait until I receive the new cable to identify what really causes the issue.

You'll need to set the headlook x/y binds to the input of the device.

In my case these settings were applied automatically. I did not have to change the settings in ED.

Got mine today. Installed everything from Tobii and it's working. Install the infinite eye software and it freezes on joy install. So...installed again....still freezing....remove x52pro and it installs, infinite screen comes up...then disappears and now give me the error 'could not initialise infinite screen extension...' Cannot get this working at all

Have you installed Tobii InfiniteScreen Extension?

:) Thanks, in those two minutes since my post, I learned to Read the Instructions Properly and found I needed that. (Who would have thought reading would ever come in handy!)

It's working now!

Reaction - very nice piece of kit, even the box is quite snazzy, nicer than that in Obsidian Ant's video (in comparison with the cheap TrackIR plastic). Easy to install and simple to calibrate.

One recommendation though - when putting the magnetic strip onto your PC/monitor, stick it onto the EyeX first, then position the EyeX so it's centered and level then push it onto your screen. If you stick the strip on first, then the Eyex, you won't notice it's not level until it's too late; and it's going to be hard to budge.

As Magic Man said above, it's an oddly stiff USB cable for such a light device, it kept wrenching the device off at first, causing the connection to come loose, leading to a stream of 'device is disconnected' warnings. Unplugging and replugging sorted those.

It's going to take some serious tweaking of the settings to get it working properly in ED though; with the out-of-the-box settings the view is drifting all over the place. TrackIR wasn't great either at the start, until I downloaded a game-specific profile that someone had created. But it was more usable than EyeX with the default settings. I'll have to tweak the settings over the next few days, but I'll be playing with TrackIR tonight :)

Well, I'd say that to sort out the cable issue the device should come with a built-in cable, i.e. welded or whatever, so that you would only need to plug it in PC. For the moment it has a potentially weak spot.

I dont have an EyeX yet, but if this is about adding head look to games, perhaps instead of going through vJoy directly you could use OpenTrack as an intermediary / option / alternative? OpenTrack allows all kinds of input devices to be used for head tracking and supports numerous methods and protocols used for head tracking. In addition to vJoy it also supports mouse emulation, Microsoft's SimConnect and both the FreeTrack and TrackIR protocols.

We don't have native support for Tobii EyeX -- yet. I'm in contact with the guys and it's high-priority along with several other new features. However I need at least a few weeks to start working on any of these.

Got mine yesterday (order placed on Jan 28). Installation was quite ok. Except: the Infinite Screen Extension app wants to install as administrator. Then it expects to find the ED bindings under the admin account, rather than the normal user account ED is actually installed under on my comp. I had to re-create the folder structure and the bind files under my admin account, but then it worked. Now it works nicely!@Tobii: please respect user accounts under Win 7, and let the user decide under which user account your software should be installed

That's what I've been thinking too. My issue is pretty similar to yours, though not that extreme. I'm looking forward to your report how it goes with the replacement cable.

The Tobyeyex is a remarkable piece of hardware.

I get mine after 10 days.

I have ED Tracker, too. But this thing is so much better.

  • There is nothing on your head
  • Very light drift
  • It works in nearly darkness
  • It´s cool and handsome
  • My cable is fine
  • I was a little bit sad to hear, that it actually won’t work on my big TV Screen. But I buy it anyway.
  • My daughter and even my wife wants to steal it from me

But it had some serious Software issues, maybe especially under WIN 7 64, maybe only in my case:

  • You have to be the Admin
  • Your Firewall and Virusscan running wild under installation (I hope you can trust them, otherwise we are doomed)
  • It had serious conflicts with Joystickdrivers
  • You have to adjust your keybindings in the game, in Elite this could be a hard minigame, if you changend something before.
  • I don’t know how to run this thing in other games, which are not listed in the “infinite screen” like Project cars.
  • When I toggle between modes in Elite, the Tobi always wants to gaze first in one corner of the cockpit. Maybe I have to adjust something.
  • In short: It´s not a plug and play device for me.

Thanks a lot to Obsidian Ant to show us this remarkable piece of Hardware and give us a discount.

I wouldn’t buy it without his advice. I am a huge fan of this gentleman and I would buy any pig I a poke he recommended, because of his trustworthy voice. Carry on, sir.

Maybe we should talk about our stettings and keybindings for Elite.

Mine arrived yesterday, but only managed to install today. Great piece of hardware!

Only thing I really miss is something like a center dead zone, so that if you look relatively central, it would be great if the view would just center itself and stay like that if your eyes don't wander outside that dead zone.

The other thing I need a solution for, is that I had to lower the chair to it's maximum and raise the monitor as far as possible to get my eyes inside the tracking angle. I need to find a way to attach the tracker on the monitor with a slight upward angle to be in my ideal sitting position. If anybody has an idea, I'll take it!

It takes also a while to get used to it, as it's completely different than a head tracker. You really don't realize how much you tend to look around! But once used to it, it works like a charm.

Mine arrived yesterday, on a windows 10 machine installation was a breeze, it took about 10 minutes from initial plug-in until it was up and running. The longest part was waiting for the driver and software download to complete. So far (I have not had a large amount of time to play with it) I have have only 3 minor gripes,

1) It would be nice if the "Infinite Screen" kept track of the last game you played and selected that by default / gave you the ability to hide or remove games you don't have.
2) Default setting out of the box are rather *twitchy* - at least on my installation - and I would like a test harness to without having to jump back into/out the the game to test different configurations.
3) The usb cable is rather stiff so it means that if you monitor is high up (for example on a desk riser) you need wedge something under the cable to keep the bar aligned properly otherwise a knock can throw the tracking out slightly.

Otherwise so far very good.. makes exploring all the more interesting as it adds the option of the distraction factor.. "oh thats a pretty planet going past..." followed by being dumped unceremoniously from SC.

I've got mine yesterday, but I was not able to make it work properly with ED.

The issues are with vJoy: in fact having already an X52 Pro and an EDTracker causes many issues.
The device was installed and working but, even after installing Infinite Screen, I was not able to make it being detected by ED. My binding files where not updated, and even trying to set the headlook axis by hand was not successful. Moreover, my X52 drivers got broken and in the end I decided to completely uninstall Infinite Screen then I had to reinstall my Saitek drivers again (I mean, the joystick was working, but all the leds where off, and the Saitek software could not run anymore, compromising the custom profile I've made on it).
I did not have so much time to struggle with the device so I gave up: I'll try again later.

Furthermore, I cannot understand how some people here with 40/42" TV are able to play the game, as you have to stay so close to the TV that makes it impossible to be comfortable.
I'll try to follow the advices someone gave, to stick it closer to me, and not on the TV directly.

Similar here. I found that if you stick the EyeX to the metallic bar and then move it upwards slightly that gives it a better angle, pointing slightly higher. Might depend on the bezel on your screen whether this is possible though, and makes it more susceptible to being dislodged by a small movement of that stiff USB cable. Even so I have ordered a monitor stand to raise my screen by about 10cm which should hopefully make it better.

I have a 40" screen and sit probably an arm-plus-another-hand's length away from the screen. Calibration doesn't seem to work at that distance, so I moved forward for that. However now its happily calibrated it seems OK, although not perfect. I'm hoping that the front edge of the monitor stand I'm getting will sit further forward than the screen though so will attempt to fix the EyeX to that and see how that goes

I adjusted the screen calibration to make the EyeX 'look' smaller than it really is which seems to improve things. First launch of E: D threw an error from Infinite Screen (Invalid URI), but on closing and relaunching E: D it seems to work fine.

Just to update myself ... the screen calibration issue was user error - I was moving the calibration lines to the edge of the EyeX, not to the markers on the top of the EyeX as I should have.

The 'Invalid URI' problem is a known issue, reported on the Tobii forums and acknowledged so should be fixed soon. In the meantime it sounds like this can be worked around by launching the E: D exe directly rather than through the launcher

Got mine yesterday. Easy to install, setup and use. Is awkward at start to use, and will prolly take time to adapt to. Motion is very smooth and snap. Product is well packed and nicely done.
Is it better than FacetrckNoIr , I dont really know :)
Attention: if you do not have normal eyesight and have problems in synchronizing your eyes (because of different sight strengths or other reason) this product may NOT be for you. I have these problems, and they are immediately visible with Tobii, your screen is all over the place :D , when I wear glasses, I manage to control everything though.

Cheers Cmdr's
