The core gameplay is boring

Oh man I love KSP. It's still the game I have the most hours in.

I know what you are trying to do, but saying there's no depth in KSP is ridiculous. I've probably spent more time in the construction screen alone than in all of ED.

CMDR CTCParadox

I also know people who've probably spend more time on knitting and stamp collecting than you did on KSP. Just because someone enjoys A over B doesn't mean A has 'more depth'. It means there is something in A that particularly appeals to you, which is absent in B. But for some reason when discussing ED the basic message often is "my opinion is truth, think like me or be shallow", which is a level of zealotry I normally only find in religion, politics and star-trek. :p If I said I prefer pizza over hotdogs noone would bat an eye, but people like Ignition seem to have difficulty with the that people have different tastes and opinions, and that someone else's taste is not by default inferior and shallow. More so, some seem to be personally offended by the idea that others may not consider his preference to be The Absolute And Perfect Truth. There really seems to be some kind of expectation that, if you complain long and loud enough, others will say "oh, right, I thought I was having fun but thanks for setting me straight! I will now join your crusade and be as unhappy as you are." Beyond that, there seems to be no goal or objective whatsoever. These complainers can rarely be found in the suggestions forums, its just an endless stream of "I like [game X], make ED more like [game X] now!!!!!!". Its very much like walking into the same restaurant day after day just to tell the customers the food they are eating is really bland, and that they should be eating something better. When asked why someone would exhibit such outrageous and bizarre behavior the answer would be:"I am just very passionate about this restaurant and I want it to succeed, and if I don't bravely and boldly speak up the chef will never change his style of cooking."

As with most things: if it would be a dumb thing to do IRL, its probably still a dumb thing to do online while hiding behind the anonymity of the internet.

The Witcher (and many other games) get to hide those repetitive mechanics behind a proper story & lots of hand-created content to keep the novelty value from wearing off. Unfortunately ED lacks most of that, so the repetitive mechanics are very obvious.

I have previously explained this issue & how ED could be fixed relatively easily:
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=177027&p=2726280&viewfull=1#post2726280

I agree with that. It's the presentation that is lacking not the core gameplay, that is fine as is. Make it feel like your are emotionally involved. I have high hopes for the next update, hoping that it will fix some of that. Was hoping powerplay was going to do that but it still felt so impersonal like the BGS did that I couldn't get involved. Looks like the BGS and missions will get an almighty boost with the next update, fingers crossed it will be what we are hoping for.

Hopefully the updated powerplay will come soon as well, as that needs a massive overhaul.

Ok this is touted as a sandbox game.

For the 7th time now.
The developer did not call it a Sandbox game.

And minecraft sucks major derriere.
DayZ sucks
Bethesda games suck big time.
Played about 10 hrs of GTA, then didn't touch it .. sucks.
(or should I rather say "I did not really like their gameplay all that much to keep me interested for more than a few hours"?)

9 Days , 15 hrs (231 hrs total) in ED and still like it.

Gonna try 7 Days to Die, though. Zombies.

Lets compare this to other sandbox games.

Minecraft
7 Days to Die
Ark Survival Evolved
Planet Explorers

What do all of those have in common that Elite does not? You can actually build something because they give you tools and materials to actually build.
You accidentally left out all the sandbox games where you can't build anything.

Building something is not a requirement for a sandbox game.

My point was that the construction system alone in KSP is quite complex, that guy said it has no depth, I disagreed. Anyway he barely even played it.

You know why people get so heated talking about Elite here? Because everyone here actually loves the game.
If they didn't they wouldn't bother posting on the forums, they'd just go elsewhere.

I love Elite, it has so much potential. Others here seem to think it is already amazing, more power to them.
I think it has a long way to go, but if it gets there it will be brilliant.

Las Vegas. Billion dollar industry. (most money is not made with Poker or Blackjack, but with slot machines .. guess you never were at a Casino)
Your good right to find all of the people enjoying it to be idiots.

well if you would know how slot amchines work and that everoyne using them is litterally a looser unless beign the one lucky guy, yes you would realise all the slotmachine users are kinda idiots, because the only true winner is the house. The gambling industry is based on hopes in which you have a mjaority of losers where the occosional winner is just a tool of advertismeent to keep up the hope of many losers willingly keep losing in hope of winning one day.

As I said before a change in priorities. Me like other people want to play the game now and not wait years to play it, and by that I'm not saying they finish the game now, just adding complexity in the core of the game. Just to fill the basic activities so at least I could play at least 1 hour of this beautiful looking game. My ED launcher is getting dusty.

Well, I guess Frontier has a plan they are sticking to. I am not a programmer by any means, but the way I see it is that Elite as a complete game is a very complex project. I think (and this is only me trying to think in an objective and logical way, by no means it means I'm right) that they are trying to build the base first. Put the pure basics of all the systems they want in game (combat, trading, explo, PP, minor factions, GalNet, bounties, BGS, etc. etc. etc.) and they then try to connect them together whilst slowly working on expanding each element and adding more complexity to it. If they put in a fully complex and complete system, then it would be difficult for them to interconnect it with all the other systems. That's how I see it at least.

KSP also requires you to be a rocketry nerd rather than just a space nerd.
What challenges do you set yourself in Elite btw?

CMDR CTCParadox

To list only some of them...

Back in a day:
* Get a fully kitted Viper, T6 and Asp
* Find a suitable system for my homebase
* Try to keep my chosen faction in control of that system
* Discover my own Earth-like
* Visit Sol (still not done it with nearly 5 weeks of gameplay racked up - playing since Premium Beta)
* Visit SagA* (still not done)
* Visit a few Nebulae I wanted to see (about 50% done)

Nowadays:
* Main one: Expand player faction I lead and build up our story, while keeping my Hussars happy :) (ongoing and succeeding!)
* Learn how to trade properly and how to discover good trade routes without help of external tools (ongoing)
* Get a Python (done! couple of days ago - and it's the biggest and most expensive ship I own to date)
* Kit out that Python for combat eventually (ties in with learning how to trade properly)

I have a set of rules I follow, for example I never look at any ships in Beta that I haven't tried in the main game yet, I refuse to use any exploits (vide a infinite rares exploit back in a day), I also wrote a backstory for my character and gave him a personality I'm trying to stick to (no slaves trading for example... few other things).

I like ot RP and I fin Elite sufficient sandbox for what I want to do in game, while keeping in mind it's still very early stage of the project. It has flaws, sure, and I had my moment of doubt (search for "A year in the cockpit" thread of mine if you care to read). I realise the game is lacking a lot, but I have faith in Frontier and despite the lackings, I am still having a blast.

Honestly I don't see the point in threads like this. No amount of moaning about the game is going to suddenly turn it into something that you like.

If you have constructive ideas, post them in the suggestions forum and go and play one of the many other complete and available space games that people are talking about for a while until you can come back and see if Elite has progressed enough or if they've implemented your suggestions.

Otherwise it's just posting the same old tired threads over and over. They have hardly any depth at all, it's a complete grind to read them.

How many buttons would you like to press to shoot an asteroid?
How many to explore?
How many to jump and deliver cargo?

It doesn't make sense to make these any more complex than pressing a button because the end result is what matters. Making mining require more buttons to extract ores will not make it more engaging. It'll make it more tedious. Give Haz Res sites much better yield to make it attractive for miners, create the synergy between them by expanding on the wings mechanism so escort pilots will have more reason to accompany miners and boom, you have better depth. A higher number of buttons for the same end result will not make it more interesting.

Sorry but staying 1 hour pressing 1 button shooting an asteroid is not fun. The end result is piece of ore.
1 hour exploring presing just 1 button to "explore" is not fun. Waiting x seconds to wait for a spining thing to finish is not fun. The end result is exploration! yey.

If the yield changed, mining would be the same pressing 1 button mindlesly shooting the asteroid to extract 1 piece of ore. The enviroment would be different and more engaging but the activity would stay as it is.

Its not only buttons its also adding challenges and skill.

Other players want to press 1 button to shoot an asteroid.
Other players want to press 1 button to explore.
Other players want to press 1 button to jump to the next system to deliver their cargo.

And me, I want complexity in what I do, nothing more. No more 1 button gameplay.

Exactly and we're roughly on the same page. Earlier in the thread you explained how you would like to see mining going which is similar to what I've said in the passed.

With exploration, do we need to bring up what was meant to go into exploration - does anyone have that thread bookmarked? LOL

How about a navi-computer and calculating our own routes so we can make Kessel runs in less than 12 parsecs (and taking of which, which dipsheep decided to kill of Han Solo?)

The difference being, I'm quite happy to do that.

I love this game and have been playing for over a year. For me all the base mechanics are fine as is, but they all can be expanded upon. For instance, exploration you jump in honk, fly upto the planet and do a DSS scan. How about the DSS scan highlights interesting places about the planet (permenant natural POI), you fly down and do some core/rock sample etc. It can all be expanded upon, but still make it optional.

So you've never been at a casino. Is that what you're trying to tell me? :p
How about Merope, have you been there?

Here's the disconnect.

I see exploration as traveling through systems, checking out the interesting ones. Flying through canyons and landscapes of alien planets. Aiming for a galaxy mark to go sightseeing.

Those who are of the one-button-persuation ask: how do I get my credits/rank?

I don't think there is nothing to do. In fact there are plenty of things to do, but I find it hard to get motivated to do these things. They are either poor executed, like mining is, or don't communicate the consequences well. I don't think it is just me. I don't have this problem with other freeform games that don't take me by my hand too. I think the game is slowly going in the right direction, though.

So yeah, new thread about same topic, now I will say I haven't read over all these posts and this isn't meant towards those that are being constructive, but threads like this makes me feel kinda like this.
http://darklegacycomics.com/525

Post constructive idea's, post suggestions on the suggestion forum, do something constructive, and who knows maybe something will happen, but you can be sure that if some players are tired of topics such at this, that seem to say a lot but really aren't saying anything....then devs have probably developed blind spots to them with the possible exception of some of the more constructive posts in them.

There are two solid facts.

- There's a significant group of people that play and enjoy Elite Dangerous, giving their idea's on suggestion and enjoying what is until more stuff arrives.
- There is a loud but most likely not as big group of players that dislike what is going on, and bemoan the whole situation, creating repetitive posts that end up in a shout fest where any constructive comments are drowned out, remember forum only has a bit over 65k users on a game that sold more then a a million, and a lot of people do not come to public forums.

So can't we try to create topics, that instead of going "that is wrong and that is wrong and that is wrong", explains what you dislike and provides a possible solution to said problem, explain expectations, explain what is missing, give examples, be constructive, rather then "I don't know how to fix this but I don't like what is here"

Please...

Home

What's one of our basic needs?

Home.

It's the basis of Maslow's hierarchy without which we're adrift in the world, without aim or ambition and forever buffetted by circumstance. Sounds familiar?

It works like this: no matter what you do - blow people up, cross the galaxy, make billions - without a home it's ultimately pointless. With a home it all makes sense.
It's a place you want to go back to. To be. To build. To develop.

So, in one fell swoop, the whole "what do I do next" discussion is solved if all that toil can be turned to building our home, then making it better, stronger, prettier, more profitable - whatever. We could even invite our mates round.

Here's how we might do it:

We start with a basic landing pad/hanger.
Then the "home" module. A place for shelter. (Already FD could make a killing selling us stuff to put in it.)
Probably next would be a storage module (we all want that don't we)
Crafting modules (a reason to go prospecting)
Engineering modules to put all that stuff together.
Weapon emplacements...
...and each development would just DEMAND non-game-advantage add-ons because, well, this is our home.

Obviously I could go on - I'm sure you could too.

Of course there's a question of cost. Should the basic module be cheap, so we can all have one? Or expensive to make it something to aspire to. I lean to the latter because that's a bit like the real world and it sure ain't easy there.

So there's some food for thought.
What do you think?
