UAs, Barnacles & More Thread 6 - The Canonn

The jury is still out on this one since it seems there's minor variations in reports. I opened a ticket regarding the issue, https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=231348 hoping to get an official statement. Anyone feel free to add to the report, the more data FD get's the better.

Managed to do this again last night and got video. Was chatting with the CMDR while he was inside but visible outside. Was much closer to the station than I've seen in the past. Also happens with NPCs.

Playing with a friend who has a questionable computer and internet connection. Seems every time he is docked and I drop down from SC hes rotating around the station shut down. Usually 4-10k from the station. Shooting him does nothing, ramming him does nothing. At 4k my Cobra MKIV could keep up with him... at 10k not so much.

Are the barnacles found in NEBULAE planets fixed with according to certain planetary conditions/properties, or, landing on any planet which meet the conditions/properties for barnacles, the game will instance a barnacle?

Nobody knows yet, except maybe some FDevs. :)

Out of curiosity, did he show up on your scanner? And if so, hollow rectangle or a solid one?

Yep, he was close enough to show up. Hollow on this occasion!

Had it with solid NPCs in the past

Hmm - UAs not only send a drawing of the scanned vessels in Mores code. They now project holograms of docked ships in space.

This technology will be picked up by the advertising industri in no time.

Aren't they already doing that on the outsides of stations anyway, advertisting ship manufacturers and what not?
Wouldn't be too hard for the emitter arrays to be fitted with reverse cameras transmitting background stars over their fronts while the commercial banners (or "space craft") were hung inbetween?.
Make it a cross-hatch array of sensors and screens and the lights from the screens should provide enough of a bloom effect to hide the camera locations in the intersecting "pixel" quadrants. Then simply use eight transcievers in a cube to present a three dimensional plano holograph that can of course be controlled by small thrusters to avoid tampering by graffito artists and what-not.

Obviously getting out of the ship in an EVAC suit or using some filters combined with a magnifier (storyline choice?) would enable the ruse to be revealed but from a recommended viewing distance for best audience appreciation perspective, it would be good enough for now.
:p

Professor Ishmael Palin

...
Palin is a charlatan, a confidence man. He's tricked everyone into thinking he's a professor.
At the end of the Wings trailer, Palin says something along the lines of "Let's see what this is worth"; not very scientific of you, "professor".
...

LAB 69's Official Position on Palin below.- until proved otherwise.
:D define a proof, please :D

HUD in Wing trailer use always surnames!

Check it again!
That this CMDR is (or should) really the later Professor in the news was only a (wishfull thinking) "interpretion" and to a 99% chance wrong. [IMHO]
No proof for that ... Not a bit.

At least at has lead to find the "T-bug" in the current/last morse generation in the end because of a obsessed unknown italian faction.:D
What an unbelievably effort.

Blaze your own trail! (or repeat the issues from other ...)
You can pre order the upcomming usual console "BradyGameGuide" for "Elite Dangerous" with all solutions and explained mysteries for only 5999$ at the right place.

(usually I post for a interesting discussion, not to be right all the time. So please see never as a offense.)

Salute and again the request for more (lot, lot more) biscuits!

Palin isn't missing. He's just on his way to MAIA B, but everytime he enters SC he gets interdicted within the next 10 seconds.
That way, it takes days to get there. Being an NPC, he can't log out to terminate the loop.

A few observations on what's been going on with the whole UA/barnacle mystery:

- The UA's pointed players in the direction of the Pleiades, specifically to Merope.
- Recently, Palin announced (before vanishing) that he's taking his research on UA's and meta-alloys and moving it to a facility in Maia b1ba.

Under the Greek legend of the 7 sisters, Merope is the youngest, and Maia the eldest of the sisters. In order:

  1. Maia, eldest of the seven Pleiades, was mother of Hermes by Zeus.
  2. Electra was mother of Dardanus and Iasion, by Zeus.
  3. Taygete was mother of Lacedaemon, also by Zeus.
  4. Alcyone was mother of Hyrieus, Hyperenor and Aethusa by Poseidon.
  5. Celaeno was mother of Lycus and Nycteus by Poseidon; and of Eurypylus also by Poseidon, and of Lycus and Chimaereus byPrometheus
  6. Sterope (also Asterope) was mother of Oenomaus by Ares.
  7. Merope, youngest of the seven Pleiades, was wooed by Orion. In other mythic contexts she married Sisyphus and, becoming mortal, faded away. She bore Sisyphus several sons.

So, here's my theory - there's been mention of both the oldest and youngest of the sisters....could Alcyone, the middle sister, be the next clue? Perhaps a triangulate point? Will the other sisters provide clues? Where's the best place to grab a burger in the Bay Area? Does this shirt make me look fat?

Palin's sudden disappearance seems to add weight to a theory (admittedly, a conspiracy theory) I've had simmering in the back of my mind.

NO TINFOIL REQUIRED (But don't feel obligated to remove it).

Palin is a charlatan, a confidence man. He's tricked everyone into thinking he's a professor.

At the end of the Wings trailer, Palin says something along the lines of "Let's see what this is worth"; not very scientific of you, "professor".

But instead of just selling the UA he had gotten his hands on, he came up with a bigger scheme: get paid to "research" it.

The Fed's caught wind of the truth during his initial "research" project, but to save face just kicked him out and shut down his scheme.

The intruders at Christian Dock were old marks of his who had caught up to him.

Then he went freelance, and cooked up a scheme for everyone to bring him emergency shelters which he stockpiled for cheap.

When the barnacles were found and the "healing" properties of the meta-alloys were revealed (remember: he didn't discover this, the repairmen at Obsidian Orbital did), he cooked up another drive to have tons of the stuff delivered to him for more "research", and rapidly crashing prices.

Loaded up with meta-alloys and emergency shelters to store them in on uncharted moons, out of sight of authorities, it was time for him to disappear with his ill-gotten gains and get rich selling the stuff on the black market.

Yes, this is the last we've seen of "Professor Palin". He'll be sipping martinis on a paradise planet soon enough.

...

[Apologies to Palin if this is all untrue. Feel free to pick holes everyone ;)]

I love this theory! Might you be willing to entertain mine?

Canonn Research had a Dark Wheel spy
who was working for years on finding more about the UA's and barnacles. Once the mole (Socha) found out that Palin had lost his funding and was the best scientist to discover the truth about the barnacles Socha had found in the Pleiades, he attempted to bring Palin on to conduct research, but Palin rebuffed the request.

Knowing that he needed both the scientific might of Canonn and Palin's mind in order to carry out his mission, Socha created the Obsidian Orbital plague by smuggling a damaged UA into the station. This forced Palin's hand to work with Canonn in discovering a cure, and allowing Palin to consequently push for greater UA research in the same area as the barnacle (the Pleiades).

However, Socha's cover was blown and he was killed. Knowing that their inside man was gone, the Dark Wheel sent a scout to scan the station for information on Palin's jump route to Maia b1ba. As Palin left the system on his way to the Pleiades, the Dark Wheel used the intel to intercept Palin en route. My belief is that Palin is in the hands of the Dark Wheel.

Regarding the barnacle themselves, my theory is that the Dark Wheel is after them because they are seed pods indigenous only to...wait for it.... Raxxla! They are found in places where Raxxla leaves hyperspace and sheds its cells, which seeds the other planets. The UA's are Raxxla nav beacons that point to Raxxla's last location in known space.... which happens to be the same location where all the barnacles are.

Hello there Frontier! A question for you. Do we have to make everything up here, or is there some real - detailed- content to discover regarding alien species... right now? Without any updates or so? Stuff we can actually interact with, rather than speculate about?

It really is about time you answered that question. Please.

Id kindly request that everyone pauses until that question is answered.

As an afterthought, hard to find is not a problem to me... as long as I know something is there to discover. Im not asking for any more info apart from the question I asked. I just want to know if im wasting my time or not.

The whole premise of the game is for us to feel immersed in a world that's seemingly without hierarchical power (admins), they want us to investigate on our own and figure it out for ourselves. It's what gets community involvement going. While it's frustrating it isn't a "pass go, collect 200$" type of game where you're basically a mindless zombie. You're correct in that there are answers but they'll be answered with in game results and minor hints and pointers in due time. It's apart of the fun of this game. While I understand it's not for everyone it's as realistic of a game as you can get.

Ok this is probably wandering of the current topic of that twit Palin disappearing, but...

I'm currently on the DW expedition and diligently searching every nebula we stop at for barnacles. Not found any yet but something has occurred to me, do those planets we know to have barnacles (like merope 5c) make any different sounds when selected in the system map? Just looking for a better way to locate them :)

Everyone knows that you can tell the basic planet type via the noise it makes, wouldn't it be great if planets likely to spawn barnacles had some audio cue to give us a hint :)

To add on to this I've already searched the Statue of Liberty Nebula last week with no luck so if you happen to go that way, don't waste your time.

Very interesting theory. I like a good treasure hunt.

As for the other recent poster, I personally prefer the game work like this. I'd prefer there be no barnacles, until somebody, one of us, finds them. And once we do, then the community event starts and the little story pieces get announced on the GalNet and we follow through.

Maybe there are already Thargoids, and other aliens. Maybe they are out there. But nobody's found them yet.

Reminds me of the first Borg epidose of TNG. They were never a problem until Q introduced them.

You interrupted your own pause :p

The whole premise of the game is for us to feel immersed in a world that's seemingly without hierarchical power - but is it? We absolutely need an answer from FD if this content is in game. Otherwise they defeat the whole purpose of what you say by incrementally adding almost zero free to explore content for us, but just enough scripted stuff to bait us along. That would not be a nice outcome. Hopefully the content is there. And hopefully they can state that here...

And, I always interrupt myself. Look. I did it again! Sigh.
