Palin's sudden disappearance seems to add weight to a theory (admittedly, a conspiracy theory) I've had simmering in the back of my mind.
NO TINFOIL REQUIRED (But don't feel obligated to remove it).
Palin is a charlatan, a confidence man. He's tricked everyone into thinking he's a professor.
At the end of the Wings trailer, Palin says something along the lines of "Let's see what this is worth"; not very scientific of you, "professor".
But instead of just selling the UA he had gotten his hands on, he came up with a bigger scheme: get paid to "research" it.
The Fed's caught wind of the truth during his initial "research" project, but to save face just kicked him out and shut down his scheme.
The intruders at Christian Dock were old marks of his who had caught up to him.
Then he went freelance, and cooked up a scheme for everyone to bring him emergency shelters which he stockpiled for cheap.
When the barnacles were found and the "healing" properties of the meta-alloys were revealed (remember: he didn't discover this, the repairmen at Obsidian Orbital did), he cooked up another drive to have tons of the stuff delivered to him for more "research", and rapidly crashing prices.
Loaded up with meta-alloys and emergency shelters to store them in on uncharted moons, out of sight of authorities, it was time for him to disappear with his ill-gotten gains and get rich selling the stuff on the black market.
Yes, this is the last we've seen of "Professor Palin". He'll be sipping martinis on a paradise planet soon enough.
...
[Apologies to Palin if this is all untrue. Feel free to pick holes everyone
