Have you read the DDF archive?

Boredom factor.

On a scale of 1-10, where 1 is the least and 10 is the most, how bored are you of reading new threads with questions or suggestions already covered in the DDF archive and then posting,

"This has already been covered, have you looked here?"

I'm up to about a 4 now i think, i'm not sure if i'm at that level for good or will creep one way or the other as time goes on. :D

Please take this in the tongue in cheek way in which it was intended.

I don't think we can avoid new questions being asked on any games forums. It would be nice if everyone searched/read the ddf before asking questions but it's still gonna happen

I do like the fact that we have a well organised archive of DDF material that we can link people to pretty easily, for one person that asks a whole lot more will follow that link you put.

I didn't answer the poll as I find it difficult to quantify my boredom factor. But this is an inevitable situation. No matter how many stickies the forum mods put up there will be certain people who will either refuse to read them before posting, or not bother to search or yet another group who will always want to create a new thread about something already covered elsewhere because they believe it will somehow be given a higher priority or read more than if they had just merged with another thread.

It's part of the process of staged release of information.
Many search functions are unimpressive in their utility, including the one attached to this variety of forum software.
It's education you're passing on. You will learn things as you teach others.
That learning is a privilege, pass it up at your cost.

I think there is also the issue of reopening an old thread to ask a question and getting told "Why reopen this thread again! ... it's been done to death!..." (or something like that :D)

It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation.

If you start a new thread to discuss a topic, some will complain about not using the search function.

If you do use the search function, some will complain about thread necromancy. :p

hmm, the thread title was misleading, I was about to say how great the DDF was..

Yeah, same here.

I have no problem with directing people there, it's great to have new enthusiastic members, who if asking a genuine question can go and read more. Sometimes it's a first post, so replying with "read the DDF n00b" or "yawn" isn't very welcoming.

With some recurring topics they are not easily dealt with via DDF, the flight model being a good example.

With all due respect to T.j the search function can be frustratingly difficult to use, and often I "know" the answer when I see the question, and have a fair idea which DDF archive thread it's in, so it's easy for me to search manually and pop out the answer.

As an example I know some kind soul produced an e-book friendly version of the whole thing, I cannot find the darn thing in here for the life of me. That would be a useful FAQ link, something people could settle down and read easily.

Sometimes the questions involve key words of three letters or less, the asker can't search on that. I've seen a couple of those recently, but don't remember what the keyword was.

Is there a collection somewhere of all the DDF OPs? That'd be a nice keepsake when this is all over.

There is an e-book someone did as at 11 November 2013. I cannot find the thread I used to get it from, and the author didn't leave their name in the .pub file for me to give them their due credit.

To be quite honest I find bad-tempered responses to honest questions posted by new backers to be much more boring/annoying than the postings themselves. Everyone has to start somewhere, and some will simply not come across the DDA, the wiki or other available information without direction.

<nods> Yep, no need for it - besides, I like answering the easy questions (they're all I can answer).
Politely pointing someone towards the DDF archive is easy.

I don't want to sound a bit of a big head, but my posts are in the DDF archives :p

And all of them were generally ignored
