My GTX 960 2Gb just doesn't cut it

I have an intel i7-4790 CPU @ 3.60GHz, 8GB RAM but my GTX 960 2 Gb let's me down for VR... and I'm curious which Graphics card and VR headset I should purchase to make my elite experience mind blowing.

Any info provided by people is appreciated... does anyone here use a GTX 960 and run smoothly??? that would really make me smile... and my wallet :)

Right now, nobody knows. If I was you. I'd wait until Frontier officially releases/supports something commercially available. Unless you're like the rest of us and had to have a DK2 now. In that case, at the moment, a DK2 and 980ti is pretty much it.

Forget about a GTX 960, ain't gonna cut it, not even close. Sorry.

I could feel it... looks like my wallet is gonna start crying... oh well.. it's worth it... I think.

Unless you simply must play now, I'd wait for the next gen of GPUs which should be out Q2/3 of this year; they are meant to be signifcently better and if nothing else should drop the price of the 780ti's

The 960 is ok... for 1080p on a monitor. It doesn't come close to the minimum specs for VR. If I read the OP correctly, nothing has been purchased yet. So wait and see is the best option. Let the devices get into people's hands (heads?) and let them be the 1st testers. That would put you closer to the next gen GPUs so things may get more interesting then too.

I'm using old amd phenomII 965 with gtx960 for dk2 and Elite med/high graphic settings. Elite is sofar most demanding vr-experience I've played. Still very playable and good vr experience, but on planets fps is not steady 75fps. I agree, that gtx960 won't cut it with cv1, but I wouldn't say "Not even close".

I would.

Thanks for the responses,,, I'll get the GTX 980 or 970... and VR(HTC Vive looks good)... might wait so that the price drops on the GPU's, they ain't cheap

Based on my pwn experience yes, it's worth it.
970 is considered the 'starting' spec for vr and that means you likely won't be able to have everything on ultra, depending on factors.
So yeah....VR IS expensive like ever other emerging technology.

CMDR At Heist, your 960 will prolly do O.K. with oculus runtime 0.5 and reduced settings with ED.. but for a lot of VR applications at launch i dont think a lot of VR apps are going to push too hard on hardware initially, think luckys tale etc.. cutesy games and demos that dont tax too much. And better optimisation will give better performance in time. So i would say get one of the HMDs anyway and try your 960 out i think it'll do ok.. :)

Thanks, I will give it a try... while I wait for the GPU's to drop in price

Twin 980Ti or Titan X cards along with 16GB of 3200Mhz+ RAM and a late 5th+ generation i7 will enable you to play in VR with SS at 2.0 and all other settings to max! I know this as that is exactly what I play with.

How'd you get SLI to work without microstutters?

amd state that they will be bringing cards out with VR specifically in mind at a low price to bring down the cost of vr..
AMD cards were faster than nvidia cards of the same spec (single gpu) since a few driver releases now. So i would deffo wait and see what they come up with.
also nvidia by now cant really messaround with 1/2 measure updates to cards either.
It is common knowlage "although disputed by the fan boys" that the amd cards are faster. and Nvidia know that.. so Nvidia cards will need to be a lot faster than they are now. or a lot cheaper, and knowing nvidia, they will try for faster and expensive rather than give up any premium they can charge due to the name.

my advice would be to keep an eye out for the next gen of amd cards, they should prove to be the best solution performance and price wise. and if they nail the drivers on release "rather than wating till all the sales have been made like they did this time" all the reviews will say the same thing.
its just a shame amd could not sort their drivers out untill 1/2 way through this generation of cards. and untill they did that nvidia were faster.. now amd are faster, but it makes no difference the people arent going to change cards right now for a 5% increase, especially when they still have issues in a number of games.

Either way, the next gen of cards should be a lot better alround with performance and pricing, with nvidia being more expensive and possibly slightly slower. But unless amd start rolling out working drivers right off the bat, its probably still going to be better to pay the premium and take the slight hit just so you get the drivers as and when needed.

Frontier already said that a GTX980 was the minimum spec for VR on elite. I'm using a DK2 and GTX970 and it's good for space up to mid settings but even with everything on minimum on planets it drops below 75 so I recommend getting a 980ti or waiting for the next range of cards to come out. I want to upgrade to a 980ti but don't have the funds right now.
