Well done CMDR, Just paid the new site a visit :)

Actually, I haven't. JC-U b3-2 was my target system at the time. I was checking the lineup with it, Merope and IH-V c2-16. Note the name of the system below the name of the target system.

Edit: ninja'd on my own defense;)

Can you confirm, if the markings on the barnacles are the same (it's hard to see on the pictures)?

Interesting pic. Note the C shape overlay with two breaks in it. Where have I seen that before? Maybe "stamped" on a barnacle? ;-)

In my opinion, the UAs and barnacles are all about the Pleiades which is why we haven't found any evidence of them anywhere else. Heck the fact that EVERY UA found points at
Merope backs that up.

On the Palin issue, I'm thinking the news story was too perfect, too detailed about his destination, and probably intended to throw off hijackers while he slipped away to another location to research the UAs. Unless he had discovered a relationship between the UAs and the black hole in Maia, it makes no sense that he would choose a planet there to set up a research base. Why wouldn't he research in Merope near the star that the UAs are pointing to? My guess is that's where he is, on a planet near the Merope star...which is where I'm at...exploring for anything unusual. Happy hunting CMDRs!!! o7

Actually the Pleiades sector JC-U B3-2 in the pics is the next system he has targeted in his route. The on below shows his current location :)

Being far out on DW theres not much i can do, but i did this:
Target, merope in gal map. Turn off stars and the grid. With a little bit of messing about it's easy to find an angle where the shape of the nebula is very very similar to the barnacle symbol.

The cattle have been branded with the logo of the ranch they're in.

Now if anyone were to look for a nebula or stars that have that view of the nebula, then maybe we can catch this wild goose?

The planet's temperature is becoming a thing:
Until now all the planets with Barnacles have temps between 190K and 380K.
The new Planet has almost the SAME temperature as the other two in Pleiades Sector JC-U B3-2: 374K vs 379K!

It's not coincidence.

I like patterns. :)

I am about to embark on a three thousand light year expedition from near Maia, which should be about one hundred jumps in Annie if I took a straight line but I used the galaxy map to chart out a few interesting diversions along the way.
I've had some "real life" confusions due to cramming so many events into such a short timeline I've actually had to resort to "stims" to prevent myself from going space happy so I could just be imagining the whole thing.
My screen occasionally got interference from small square black boxes appearing now and then while moving through the the chart in a reproductable manner so I took pen to paper and began noting galactic co-ords.

Now, should I be able to replace my passports without the Home Office sending Mi5 around to ask what I'm doing hanging around with sharp instruments wrapped in olive branches [Epsilon says hello, by the way]
I may be able to come up with some news.
Unfortunately, with Babylon everywhere these days, I'm jumping at every siren, even the ones that are Fire & Rescue volunteers and ambulatory vessels loaded down with red shields. I did answer a distress signal on a wing and a prayer the other day and just made it out after Rescue One came in to assist.

I even managed to get the afternoon meals sorted before the Captain got upset with my performance but it can be nerve wracking sometimes..

All the news reports that have been popping up in my feed make me feel that there's a directed transmission wave being pointed in my direction so I've hidden Sandy Frank away and I'm going to spin around with some friends for a bit before keyupping the Mike and full throttling out of the mouth of the harbours

I expect a diagnostic review of the ships systems on twosday where I do so hope they don't try and reel up the old presumptions and deploy emotional suppressants because of a kickback bonus from an alienfree eliot laying in wait on a pond that attracts frogs to spawn on a pad

My excitement is quite understandable considering some of the things going on around here at the moment.
I mean, really? Low-jacking my ship?!

Enough with the effects and apply only the schizms or I'll have to Sarah up on their ass and
expunge their Police National Computer and this time, it won't just be a rifinery fire that sorts out the job! [T2 reference]

I'm hoping the the powerful thrust from my massive accelerometer doesn't cause more than a few small TEMPEST scan alarms to activate as I set off to arrive three thousand light years distant in the space of nine hours travel time.

Whatever the result, I'm hoping that my sample bank will have aged enough that by the time my fellow travellers ever come back in-system, we will have enough time dilation gathered to ensure that nobody is stopped for being in possession of any blanketly-blanket-banned "novel" "mind-altering" substances TIED UP IN THE HOLD!!
Prepare for auditions along the coast from East Leigh and hopefully the liner will be available with an array of celebrity guests, looking to gather new cadets for the Space Patrol!

It's not coincidence.

Careful, Riz. Without more data to establish actual correlation this remains coincidence. The presence of the system with 190K makes the deviation quite large in our limited data set. It's also hard to move past coincidence without a second variable. Number of barnacle sites per planet might do it, but again, the number of planets in our list is still very low.

This does have me thinking about coming back to help more completely scour the Pleiades so we have more data (at least in this one nebula)

...oh and to the folks saying that the Pleiades is a group of nebula. Be careful, those pictures look like multiple light sources illuminating one dust cloud - unless there is some actual scientific account that there are dust clouds of multiple origins?

You are also quite correct. Wikipedia says it's now known that there is one unrelated dust cloud in the interstellar medium, through which the stars are currently passing. However historically the stars were identified visually; Merope nebula is NGC 1435 which apparently is the "most conspicuous reflection nebula found in the Pleiades cluster, but not the only one".

Darn it, Science

Exciting to have a new data point! Sadly, it seems to disprove the line theory of barnacle placement. Here is an Octave plot of EDSM data. Since it's basically a line and a point, now a plane will fit (until we get more data, at least). I'll see if I can whip up a plot of that, too.

Guys, seriously considering heading to the bow tie nebula.#

A: Has anyone managed to get there yet?
B: Do those synthesis things REALLY work???

its 750ly from my current position. In an asp with 32ly unladen range. Would you risk it????????

Regarding the Pleiades Nebula / Nebulae thing, it seems to me that we have people really going out of their ways to twist any offical words from what they clearly mean on the surface into meaning nearly anything else.

Do we have ANY instances of FDev intentionally using subtle wordplay, bizzare sentence structure, or minute theoretical technical distinctions, in communicating with us on the forums? I think people are making conspiracy where there is none.

Yes you are right, but for now that's the only thing we have currently, to filter our search for Barnacles.
Consider that both systems have a class M star, so that temperature could be right only for them. For the other two, Merope and Pleione, where we have a class B star, the temperature range could be slightly different.
What I mean is that the algorithm FD is using to calculate where to put barnacles, could take in account star Class as well, giving different temperatures for the chosen planets according to star class (then star temperature) of the System.

I agree 100% with you. There is no need to over analyze what MB said, because the meaning is very simple as it is: Barnacles like Nebulae, and we can find them in others as well, not only Pleiades Nebula. Not all Nebulae, anyway, because there is something related to their origin that let them choose just some of them: we don't know how and why.

Okay - the virtual light bulb over my head is flickering and made me accidentally enter my banking website's number wrong two times.
There was an offer to reactivate but only if I entered ALL the pertinent details of the account.
Now isn't this exactly what banks say never to respond to?
Well to keep a short story even shorter, I've set my email to spam block any communications from that company and I just hope they realise they should contact me by envelope dispatch, rather than persisting with a "more convenient" paperless payment system, which will result in them crediting my ledger with many missed payment charges.
"It's an outrage!", I say (in a Mighty Boosh manner).
Naturally I will pop into one of their edifaces from time to time with a fully traceable serial numbered promise list on colourful papers but I need a break from failed transaction attempts and am initiating the first of my jumps to hyperspace.

I'll just pick up my last remaining local bounty, check out Maia for any local news feed encryptions then head off in the Kadrusa direction.

Been tempted myself to make that trip.

Not looked at the route or location yet,but it would be accessible now since jumponium mats.

Most likely some explorers have discovered now.
Was listed in the nebula list thread as unreachable, but further posts after horizons mention it is reachable now.

I doubt anyone has gone seeking barnacles there yet,if viable planets are there.

I'll look into it more after work,I feel a trip coming on,wunderlust and space madness to be sure.

Asp x or refit the conda? Also Saturn nebula if reachable with mats could be of interest,

..then again in a later post, a nebula discovered called blue snowball, have to check Galmap for that one too.
Need to calculate my max jumps can do 50% jumps got plenty stock,I never found polonium yet for the 100% boosts

Maybe someone will find this helpful.
I tried to improve my "searching for barnacles" abilities today, so I went solo, found one of the known barnacles (namely: Pleiades Sector IH-V c2-16 C 4 -1,254 -164,182 ) and did some experiments. Some specs first: GPU - AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series, latest set of drivers, Win 10. Resolution: 1920 x 1080. All GPU settings were set for application to take over.
The goal was to find ingame graphical options that make barnacles more visible and to see what range/angle would be optimal for searching.

By default my settings are all set to High/Ultra, with sliders set to maximum and antialiasing SMAA x1.0. Testing method was: Position my ship (Asp Explorer) at the angle I would usually fly while searching (heli mode: about 40 degrees lean towards the ground), barnacles in front of my view. Distance from the ground 4.0 km. Then I began to tweak settings while increasing and decreasing distance to see barnies easily.

I won't get into details of what settings combinations I tried out (it took a while...;), I will just jump to conclusions. With my default settings I could see barnacle main node from about 4.0 km (knowing where to look). Options which have (in my case) impact on that distance were: Terrain Quality, Model Draw Distance, Terrain Work, FX Quality, Reflections Quality. The rest of the options did not seem to affect it in any way. So, My advice is: for getting the best barnacle visibility you need to set above five settings to maximum. Especially FX Quality and Reflections Quality as those seems to be responsilbe for "shininess" of the barnacle - this makes them more spottable. Without them I had to reduce altitude to about 2.5 km . You could also switch Blur off, and set Ambient Occlusion to High (it didnt affect the distance, but made lighting more friendly).
I would say that optimal altitude for fly by search would be about 2.5-3.5 km. I could see ring of barnacle small nodes from there.

Of course this may be different or even false for other GPUs (or different eyes ;P) so, if someone could try to confirm/deny my findings would be great.
