News Elite Dangerous: Arena is Out Now

So this is an attempt to breath some life into an otherwise dead feature of the game? Does it at least offer some decent unique gear or rewards that is transferable to the main game? Otherwise I don't see the hype lasting for more than a month... Just like CQC.

I'm very surprised, to say the least. Did I miss an announcement?
Did not see this coming at all, but I do think it is a very smart move.
Good pricing too.

FD,
Please add an AI practice mode to Arena.
That would ease people like me into it.

I'm still not interested until I can access CQC or Arena from within the main game. Be it from the station menu or by flying to a system which hosts such sport. Private matches wouldn't be a bad idea either....

i don't know if is it so already (i never played yet CQC) ... but it would be nice if the championship gives also huge game credits for the winners

It's a nice idea. You can earn "Safe" credits in the sense that you don’t loose anything for dying. But we would certainly look at one off tournaments to win big prizes.

No it doesn't give huge game credits and nor should it. It gives you a small amount of credits and until they sort out the afk farming then it certainly shouldn't give you any more.

*Edit* just re-read that you meant just the championship and not the normal game. Championship, yes, Normal, no ;)

@Zac Actually thinking about it, now it's being released as a standalone version this really needs to be sorted out more than it did before. Could you not just implement something along the lines of 'if there are no inputs detected for 1 whole game, then kick the user to the main menu'?

There is on going development into CQC so we will see a number of features and fixes coming. I agree this is one area that could be looked into.

AI is something we have heard requested before. However, that's quiet a complicated addition as the Arena is much different to standard game AI so it's not a small job.

However, the game is pretty much risk free. You can jump in without any risk, if you die, you just respawn and you always get XP and credits anyway.

Smart move. I'd actually like to see CQC altered to bring in different classes of ships. By this I mean lightweight fighters (Up to the Eagle), then medium weight (Vipers, Cobra etc) and then Heavyweight (Clippers, Pythons, FDL's). I think that would make an interesting mix.

Yes but getting offed frequently by much better arena pvp-ers will not improve my skill.
I will become very skilled in exploding of course :).

But I will have to bite the bullet perhaps and just try it out.
I did like Unreal Tournament and Quake Arena back in the days.

I love that idea.

Or perhaps some Python only (FDL only etc.) slaughter fest.

This is a good move.

Now onto the sticky bit, any change we could get CQC/Arena integrated as a menu option at space stations? I'd play it far more if I could chose to launch it whilst in game rather than having to log out?

this is great news with no downside really.
Means more players, more money for FD and hopefully means the chances of getting more content has just increased considerably.

5 quid as well.. barely more than the price of a pint of beer.

Another good idea.
But it should also stay accessible separately for those lonely explorers out there.

Any chance you will be making the UIs for Arena more VR-compatible? Gameplay is great fun, but staring at a non-VR lobby system and ship management UI breaks immersion between rounds. It would be nice to hear about it if you are reworking the UIs (and in the main game) to make them more VR-specific, and would be a good demonstration that FD are out in front of VR AAA game development.

Looking at the Steam entry for Arena, I think it would be good to clarify to potential purchasers that they will be able to play alongside those that are accessing Arena via the full ED game mode. Also highlight the fact the if a purchaser goes on to buy the full game, they will recieve a discount that matches the purchase price of Arena.

I have never played CQC (the matchmaking is not kind to southamericans), but there isn't a map on a planet surface, right? That would be super cool, fighting while being affected by gravity (imagine trying to not being blow up in a +6 G world).

I much prefer this idea to "light", "medium" and "heavyweight" classes, since this would require all ships in those classes to be balanced very good against each other - since in contrast to the main game CQC is a pure competitive game mode. And I am strongly against balancing differently prices ships like the Python, Clipper FdL etc. since history tells us too much balancing kills variety and individualism (just look at WoW, where - compared to Vanilla times - the classes nowadays all play very similarly and interesting unique class specific features have been removed for the sake of "balancing" over time. Man, I really don't like when game design has "balancing" as a high priority.)
