I'm not sure how a Open PvE mode could make the game dying. If (which I highly doubt) so many would go there that open becomes a wasteland then that would mean said Open PvE mode is highly populated, aka the game is doing good and lots of people play with each other.

If players flock to an open PvE mode making it highly populated and open as it is today becomes a wasteland. That will just prove that open was the wrong mode to begin with.

Eh? Just give the tools to all groups, why are you suggesting limit it to Mobius? Why does it need to be on the login screen, leave it as it is, it works for 20,000 CMDRs.

Eh? Because there's a limit of 32 on an instance... If the limit was 5 it wouldn't matter if you're seeing 0. The limit has got nothing to do with it.

So what if it's already fragmented? This is why I'm advocating efforts to unify the playerbase back into open.

The reason for putting it on the login screen is so it is readily accessible by all players not just those that know about mobius... heck why not allow groups to have a display flag, public / private, and change the private groups name to just groups... then display all public flagged groups when a player clicks on groups... and allow a create group option there... all groups get the same admid tools etc of course and all group admins get access to a players PVP stats from frontier when they apply to join any group...

I seriously doubt a lot of the Multiplayer PVE ONLY crowd will be coming back to open... Seriously douibt it... You know, last time I did some CG's was with Obsidian Orbitals CG's and it was a lot of fun, a lot of commanders... if you are not seeing many commanders now... why do you think that is???

Open is Frontier's intended game mode I think.

Things evolve and change. For example, most religions were intended as a way of bringing community together, ensuring positive social interaction and making the world a better place. Still, each of them spawns fundamentalists, who have a similar way of thinking to the one you display: "You shall follow this particular outlook only, no other opinions are meaningful and no other opinions should be taken under consideration".

Frontier might have had a particular vision for Elite Dangerous, but at the same time what they created apparently found an unintended market of people who are interested in PVE, multiplayer space sim. They have a very simple choice: embrace this market and give them the possibility to get this type of gameplay in ED or wave this part of the customer base goodbye when they leave in search of other titles catering to their needs in a better way (there is at least one such title coming out soon). There are many reasons why ED might loose its player base as it is, there is no need to add more. And quite frankly, I would like to see the way ED looks in 2-3 years from now on, so I'd like FD to ensure it still exists then.

I would utterly love to see all players there.

All players might have no desire to see yourself in current Open. I'd imagine this wouldn't be the most important reason for them choosing other modes though.

Tell you what: I would utterly love to see you in Open PVE. How does this sound? I think that my statement and wish is as valid as yours is.

What the....

The whole point is to make open welcoming, to make changes which encourage folks not to go Mobius.
Not to force everyone into open and keep things as they are.

There is no "right way" to play the game - DBOBE has said that himself.

Making Open welcoming to all players would similarly require all players to play in a way that is acceptable to all players - never going to happen as we have all been encouraged to "play the game how you want to".

I voted differently earlier, but on reflection have changed my mind.

I play open. I've had a few 'I wish I had my brown trousers' moments, and I've done the same to a few CMDRs in conflict zones.

However, the basic thing to understand is that people's motivations for playing the game aren't the same as yours or mine and they may not wish to play the same game in the same way that you or I do. For some, perhaps being attacked in open is not fun. An openPvE mode would render the Mobius private group obsolete, and would reduce the drama on the forums that appears from time to time when someone infiltrates the group and attacks unwitting CMDRs. It would make no difference to players in open, and would probably draw good numbers of players from solo.

OpenPvE already exists in the form of Mobius. Adding a mode that actually enforced the "no PvP" ruleset without relying on an honour system wouldn't change anything for players who don't play in Mobius. Therefore, I don't see any merit in the recent threads against the idea of openPvE. It won't change your game, so why are you so keen to enforce your game on others?

The reason why Mobius group was created was to provide players with PVE environment. It was the only thing that could be done to meet the demand for such a gameplay style. And this solution is very far from perfect because: 1. It is managed by one person, who shouldn't be asked to volunteer their time for the good of ED and FD and who is facing enormous workload instead of being able to enjoy the game and the community 2. This solution hit technical limitations that affect its efficiency 3. Apparently it still requires some attention from FD staff 4. This solution is still not a permanent functionality of the game, the day Mobius decides not to give a damn anymore, this functionality will be gone.

Aye I said pretty much a few days back. https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=233412&p=3584985#post3584985

For me I'd rather Frontier give players the ability to manage groups effectively rather than creating a new game mode.

Your fears of the community being split in case of Open PVE mode being created are illogical. If such mode was added, players from Mobius and other groups created for PVE players will happily move to that mode thus leading to PVE players population being concentrated in one place as opposed to split throughout private PVE groups.

Yes some players would join a new game-mode but not all. It's arguable which way it would go. Mobius exists, it won't just cease to exist if a new PvE game-mode happens.

I just think focus is better placed on improving open and making it more welcoming than working on ways to separate people.

I think that people who created and maintain open PVE groups will be happy to not have to do so anymore and just enjoy the game instead.
Private groups are certainly suitable for LAN parties or playing with a few friends only, but not for thousands of players looking for the social element in ED.

If you're talking about group management. Frontier enforcing rules is a whole different kettle of fish to player enforcing rules. I can literally kick you out of my group right now if I think you're going to cause trouble, Frontier can't.

I could have literally kicked every single person ever associated with SDC already. Frontier can't do this.

I like your positive attitude.

Hope for the best, expect the worst.

.... which is what I did from the outset of the Kickstarter. The fact that we seem to have players with diametrically opposed play-styles in the game suggests that there is no real chance of everybody *wanting* to play in Open - and, given that we all choose which game mode to play in on a session-by-session basis, no likelihood of it happening any time soon (if ever).

*shrugs*

Wouldn't be surprised if I'd spent more time in Mobius than open. I'm not anti-PvE.

Indeed. I have never gone into Open and there are no circumstances that would see me do so. I realise that I'm in a minority in that respect, but I also realise that I'm not the only one.

Which misses the point that the actions leading to the recent dramageddon wouldn't have been possible in an openPvE mode

Well I'd say the issue is not that someone got shot in Mobius, the drama is the issue.

It's an isolated case that's getting tons of publicity way beyond what it's worth.

It's worth noting the posting showing it all was STARTED by the people who did the griefing.

Why do you think SDC did it? Obviously it wasn't to kill a few CMDRs.

People are reading these threads and thinking there's a huge problem with Mobius not being safe anymore, which is completely untrue.

I'd also say you don't have to shoot people to grief them.

Shooting is just the easiest and most convenient way to do it.

In a way I'm glad griefers go straight to shooting and are immediately banned at which point they can no longer grief.

Fail fast fail early, you want faulty components to fail quickly and be removed.

I do not believe that it is the fear of fragmentation that drives opposition to an Open PvE mode from PvP players, but rather, the opposite. The likelyhood that it would become the largest group, with Open turning into a space-tumbleweed riven desert is what PvP players truly fear. The demand for a PvE environment is outstripping the ability of a single private group to provide it. If Frontier are serious about the "Play it your own way" motif then an Open PvE mode will become inevitable. This poll and Mobius seems to bear out the notion that there is a demand for such a mode.

Mind if I ask.

Why? Why are there no circumstances that would see you go into open, what exactly is the problem with it?

I don't think "play it your own way" means you get to choose parts of the game which you don't like, and Frontier has to remove them.

It's simply that I have absolutely no interest in Elite as a multiplayer game. I never have done. I backed the KS for the offline single player game.

As I understand it, this game is Elite: Dangerous, not Elite: Safe. The theme does not require solely for Player vs Environment. The Solo/Private modes are there for new players to learn the ropes, so that eventually they can play in Open mode and experience how "dangerous" space is. If you cannot handle the "danger" in Open, go back to Solo/Private and learn more. Eventually, you should learn the hardest lesson, which is how to survive and not to complain when things are seemingly unfair to you.

Hmm ok gotcha. So co-op PvE is irrelevant to you.

Can I ask (don't feel you need to answer this).

Why not interested in the multiplayer aspect? I mean from my point of view there can be a whole bunch of fun had from interacting with other players, whether that's doing UA experiments where you need multiple people to test properly, blowing each other up or just a chance encounter at say a CG wreckage site where you talk to some CMDR you'll probably never meet again about what's going on with the ED storyline.

I would say I generally prefer doing my own thing FWIW.

Arrogant nonsense. No one mode is superior to any other in any way, and there's no progression through them. They just offer different things for different ways to play.

.... but, with the game design including three game modes with varying populations, Frontier have indeed allowed each player to select how many other players to play the game with - the game mode choices themselves remove other players from the game (from the perspective of a single player).
