Is this game really hard? or am I just a noob :)

I am enjoying it (don't misunderstand me, no complaints) but is it just me or is the ships in alpha 1.1 really hard to pilot. I do understated that I have only been flying for 2 days but I remember being much better in Elite and wing commander ( 1000, years ago :)

Looking for tips and hints to make me a better pilot and more efficient in the cockpit

Are you using Keyboard and Mouse, Joystick or a gamepad controller?

I found that switching to a Joystick so much better than KB+mouse (even a cheapo joystick at that)... my HOTAS setup should be here today so I'm looking forward to that.

I suggest you watch the livestream from yesterday if you have not already done so it's at the top of this forum, go to the Twitch TV site and watch the Dev play it and give tips... (Here) http://www.twitch.tv/elitedangerous/b/520668350

Best advice I can give is that don't throttle to 100%... keep it in the blue region next to the throttle indicator on the HUD for maximum turning performance

They are not hard to pilot. I wouldn't bother with mouse and keyboard, you at least want to use a gamepad. Use roll and pitch and watch some youtube videos and you'll be fine. Also, don't try and pitch while you are at full speed.

im stuck on mission 4 were you are u out gunned 4 to 1 its well hard I can take 2 out and that's it help!!!!!!

  • Keep your speed at around 50% or lower.
  • As they approach and shoot at you, turn Flight Assist off, and track them as they pass.
  • Once they pass, turn Flight Assist back on and chase them.

Keep repeating this process until you get to the point where you can kill all four.

Easier said than done, flight assist off is like ice skating with a wrestler. It's quite difficult to cancel out rolling and such. Well it is for me.

I can relate. I'm afraid this may have something to do with us being 25 years older, but I can't be sure. ;)

All the SP missions are tutorial in nature, each tests your understanding of the game mechanics. This one explores your understanding of the effectiveness of missiles and that you have a secondary ordnance option.

Once you've done it once you'll wonder why you found it so hard. :)

Practice on Mission 2, get a setting that works for you and learn to use yaw effectively. I too struggled and lots of practice on mission 2 seemed to work. I couldn't believe how hard it was, but most of that was down to poor control. When I retried mission 4 I sailed through.

The skating / rolling will cancel itself out when you put flight assist back on.

The trick in to turn flight assist off, pull a 90 degree turn or so, whilst tracking your target, then put flight assist back on.

Are you using left and right?

I struggled for a bit, and I still have moments where I just can't seem to keep the targets in my sights. I did quickly get better though as soon as I started using A and D.

I am using the keyboard mouse combo for now. Set the throttle between the blue marks like others are saying, roll and climb or dive to get close, fine tune with left and right (A & E)

Hope that helps...

i'm stuck on this one too must be because i'm getting old i think lol.

If it is the one where you have to fight 4 Federal fighters. Wait until all of them exit the hyperspace, do not attack the single ship that appeared before the others. Get behind all the ships, select 1 of the 3 ships that have arrived later, fire lasers at him and launch several missiles. If you get attacked by several enemies distribute power to your systems in order to strengthen your shields. Generally, you do not need power at engines during the fight with Federal fighters so you can redistribute power between your weapons and systems.

As other cmdrs have said this scenario is really about secondary weapon use , so once the Fed fighters appear target one ,then hold fire until missile lock is acheived at that point open with laser fire and launch 3x missile select next target and move on. this should give a free first kill :)

Also make sure you have plenty of power to your weapons and while manoeuvring (pitch up/down) keep inside the blue zone on your speed gauge (this will move/shrink depending on power config)

Here is my "best" effort:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ENiHncFbsU

and one with FA off:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x05-5DtM4uc

The Fa off option requires you to counter thrust most inputs and lots of thruster use but seems to work with gimbled Weapons :)

I'd say yes, its really difficult but you do slowly get better. I think that you'd laugh at my pitiful efforts, to try and take out the sidewinder in mission 3, we danced around each other for about half an hour. Before I was able to finally get his shields down and take him out. The four feds I did surprisingly fast, then in the next mission started attacking the cobra, and eventually ran out of bullets. At that point I didn't know what to do.

I've got my Xbox controller set up how I like, which has helped. I really struggle to keep a ship in my sights, especially when they weave under or over you. Getting around, even with slower speed for more agile turning, its painfully slow. I wasted so many shots trying to take down that cobra simply because I just couldn't keep him in my sights. If anyone has any tips there, also I think in that scenario there might be a Anaconda somewhere, but I never saw it. I came across the cobra and spent the next 20 mins wasting all my ammo.

Also a humble request, I went then into multiplayer, and managed to land on the space port after 15 mins trying (boy is that hard) but then got shot by another player when I warped into the asteroid minfield. Please I am still so new to this unless I fire on you, don't kill me I'm trying to get to grips here.

Thanks

Ab

Landing at the station is not difficult when you get used to it. However it might be tricky with XBOX controller. You might actually try keyboard and mouse just to see if it makes difference.

In the mission where you have attacked Cobra you need in fact to avoid it and to destroy three other ships (Federal Fighters) without attracting attention to Cobra. However you can destroy Cobra first and then destroy the others. Besides multi-cannon in that mission you have a laser which you could also use and it does not require ammunition.

There are different CMDRs in multi-player. Some are honorable and won't attack you, others are different (some will attack any other PC in sight).
