Alpha Centauri Warning..

A trivia: here in Italy, a very popular japanese '80 anime about soccer is "Capitan Tsubasa", here translated "Holly & Benji". This anime was a true phenomenon of popularity here in Italy in the years of my childhood, and still fondly remembered today. "Holly" is diminutive for the main character, the player Oliver Hutton (Tsubasa in original). An hilarious characteristic is that the soccer field is apparently enormous and every action takes a half of episode... seems that the field is kilometers long.

A very interesting coincidence that a station named Hutton is at the end of a looooong trip, like in that anime... ;-)

I quite fancy a Hutton Orbital Mug, so I might take a trip there just because I can...
plus I can let A.S.T.R.A fly the ship in Voice Attack while I go watch the news, make dinner etc
or just browse the internet, watch a few youtube vids etc ;)

Can't tell you how many times, as a kid, I ran out of fuel in Alpha Centauri playing Frontier. So frustrating! Glad they've included that feature for the nostalgia value ;)

I havent made the trip, but I am having a hard time understanding why so many people run out of fuel. Can you please explain?
Even my Anaconda requires a little over 2.2 tons of fuel per hour to operate. Can be reduced if I shutdown a few things.
So an 8T fuel tank, in a small ship, assuming you fuel scoop when you jump in, should last you for over 3 hours. How long is the trip in SC?

Alpha centauri was like this in Frontier, too. It's huge because it's a binary star system.

We're hoping ED will eventually allow a way to jump to a specific star, so this will be less of an issue.

This feature is still on the list, as far as I am informed. Last news about it was that they were considering it. I guess they'll introduce it at some point and add a nifty little GalNet News article about a "breakthrough in FSD technology".

How would it be a breakthrough in FSD technology?

The current implementation is not logical. It doesn't make any sense that you can jump between stars that are closer to each other (but in different systems) than some stars that are in the same binary system (but further apart), and that you can't jump between those (or at least choose which one you jump to).

It has nothing to do with lore or any limitation of the FSD technology. It's a gameplay flaw.

Having two jump points in relative close proximity causes FSD problems. After early trials which ended up with ships being ripped in half upon jumping, Galactic treaties were put in place that limited ship jump capabilities to a single location in any given system.

Fully supported by Universal Cartographic as well as Nav computer manufacturers, it helps prevent sphagettification.

It should be noted that in the days of witch space jumps, commanders were often interdicted by Thargoids and it is this situation that scares the bejeesus out of people and therefore is strictly adhered to.

That seems like an incredibly stupid explanation though. If the FSD can so easily ignore the other stars in a system, surely it should be able to choose which star to not ignore.....

Definitely seems like a cover story for a gameplay flaw. :p

Or it could be made up entirely by me.

Whatever the case it is and it will not change so why moan and be rude? We all enjoy the trip to Hutton Orbital and it has spawned much emergent gameplay.

So. Chill out. Enjoy the game. If stuff is too far, go somewhere else!

I didn't mean to be rude, but I may bit a bit forward. It's just how I am. :p

"We all" though? I certainly would not enjoy such a trip. It would most likely involve being alt-tabbed out of the game 99% of the time. Yaaaay, much fun.

I would, but the problem is that a lot of the time, you won't be able to know how far a station is from the main star, when picking up a mission, because no system data is available for that system (which is the case quite often actually).

By we all.. I mean the 800 odd Hutton Truckers :)

I'm shooting at anyone that enters alpha centauri and tries to reach those 2 stations - in the name of federation. As an admiral in federation I decided it's risky to have independent system so close to Earth, so the system is under embargo until populations comes to their senses and embraces federation. Anyone trying to do business with alpha centauri will be treated as enemy of federation and get shot.

just gonna leave this here so I don't need to spam local chat...

You'd run away when I came back armed for bear after you blew up my ASP twice last night.

you came back in asp? And statistically speaking I would probably not. Curently how things stand: around 70-80 killed, all from sidewinders to anacondas, during that I ran 2 times (when I was in viper mkIV vs wings), never died. So I suggest you save yourself some credits and just dodge the system until it's in federation.

Good for you. It's always nice to have the populace reminded why Federation rule is currently a bad thing.
