VIVE in 2days, time for FDEV to give an update on rift support

VIVE preorder are starting in 2 days, and I am pretty sure Frontier have a CV1 now because the dev of Assetto Corsa got theirs last week... An update on Oculus support would be needed... There's a lot of money at stake...

Yeah I got an email from Kickstarter the other day asking me to update my phone number as my "gift" from Oculus was about to ship.

Personally, I don't see why there is a need for Frontier to keep on repeating the same information again and again. If there is a change to the situation, pretty sure they'd have announced it. Common sense says that a games company that's been around as long as Frontier and has produced one of the killer VR apps and mentions it in all of their press material knows full well what the situation is.

It is just that people have spent so much money they are worried and FD have not said they will support it just that they are in contact with oculus and are working on it. If no progress what so ever has been made then it may be time for some to cancel

FD confirmed support for the vive last year. Vive pre orders are open. Not sure why a rift announcement is needed. If you want to play elite in VR, get a DK2 or a Vive.

Not liking the situation does not change it.

Selling my DK2, getting a CV1. Not getting a Vive. If ED doesn't work on the CV1 then it's goodbye ED - shame as, despite it's weaknesses, it really is one of the best VR experiences. :(

So, why buy a CV1?

Getting a freebie... but I'd still buy it over the Vive anyway as it more suits the type of experiences I want - ie totally disinterested in the standing up, room scale thing and, having used VR since the initial DK1, I hate the whole headphones hassle and really, really like the Oculus solution.

ED will be an unfortunate casualty.

its a gamble for sure, but (subjective opinion) for what i want VR for the CV1 is better. its lighter, more comfortable, better lenses and i do not have to worry about the light house positioning at the back of my room.

motion controllers for me are something i would like to have one day, and full room tracking i have no interest in. The slightly better FOV is a vive+ for sure, but it is so slight, i can live with it.. DK2 FOV never concerned me. but that is just me, i totally get why some want a vive.

all op was asking for was an update... jeesh!. imo it is not too outrageous to ask if there is any update... surely IF FD are being totally honest and are actively working on it and have been actively working on it since 1.0 was released, they either have made some progress, or they haven’t, and even the update that behind the scenes no progress has been made, may help people make the right call to cancel their order.

on the flip side some may feel right berks if they cancel their order and then 24hrs later perfect rift support is announced.

---------- edit

I figure I / we just over 5 hrs to decide,.... I sold my DK2 before xmas due to a new child meaning i had little time to play, and at that point was going on the hope that support would be sorted by launch (a mistake with hindsite). I reckon i have 3 (4 if you count the 1 "silly" option.

1) Cancel CV1 and order vive, - buying a (for me) inferior and more expensive product to guarantee me access to the imo best VR experience out there.

2) keep the CV1, stay stong and hold the course - and risk potentially having a £530 paperweight (well not exactly but still missing on the best VR game)

3) buy both, hope by the time they arrive support is sorted and sell the "loser" hopefully breaking even. (a money gamble)

(or 4 the silly bet - ) hang fire and wait till summer!. (not an option for me, once you go full VR its not an option to consider going back) :)

Even steamVR is currently broken on CV1 i believe.

I did preorder the CV1 and dropped a ticket to the Oculus support a few days ago.
Here the kind expected answer from the Oculus support team:

"Hello Oogie Boogie,

Thanks for reaching out to Oculus Support today.

I understand that you'd like confirmation on Rift compatibility with Elite Dangerous.

Unfortunately, this answer is beyond the scope of our support team. Generally, our support team is here to help customers with troubleshooting and order information.

I totally understand that you want to experience Elite Dangerous in VR and the hardware compatibility for this game will play a large part in your decision on which product to go with.

I'm sorry I couldn't provide you with the specific information you were looking for, but I would suggest keeping your attention on the official blog for future updates on game compatibility with the Rift.

If you have any other questions, please let me know and I'd be happy to help.

Thank you!

Constantine
Oculus Support"

It's not an oculus issue so I don't know why you'd even ask them. It's an FDEV issue. The same issue will soon present itself with Vive when they turn off extended mode in favour of direct mode. FDEV need to implement direct mode rendering or none of us will be playing Elite Dangerous in VR either with Vive or Rift.

For people commenting who think those of us with Rift orders should stop complaining just wait until users who shelled out more for a Vive discover their beloved space game won't work with that headset either! Maybe then FDEV will decide to fix the issues with their game engine.

Since the update today that 2.1 won't be out till June at the earliest and they won't be releasing any patches before then I would not expect Rift support till at least then (unless you're in the Beta then maybe May).
I would just assume that they won't support it till they do support it (and then let a canary try it first), save yourselves some heartache.

indeed... I am on the verge of cancelling my order to be honest..... but SteamVR is still a hope as a bandaid....

if i cancel and then it is supported i will be so cheesed off!.

As I said previously, holding off on either of the device was and still is the smart move. Sure, they won't be available until later this year, but at least the dices will have rolled by then and we will know what supports who and what works and doesn't.

For now my plan is:

* Keep that DK2 (till it dies a hero's death),
* Get a PlaystationVR when it comes out (Known configuration, guaranteed performance, reasonable quality)
* Update this PC 290's (crossfire) to next iteration on AMD coming later this year (probably single card - thinking of giving up on dual cards as while an excellent tech devs poorly support them)
* Then, when proper cost/support/performance/reviews are done, get one of the PC HMDs.
* Enjoy!

While I wish that SDK and direct mode support would be made available earlier, as long as Vive support extended mode through SteamVR it's ok with me, even if settings have to be toned down.

I don't remember hearing whether FDev got a CV1. If they didn't, then they don't have access to v1.0 of the SDK, and nothing has changed.

That's the real question to ask, but at this point if they haven't told us yet I doubt they would either receive one now, or announce the CV1 they've had for weeks.
