Ship's ability to coast?

Hey guys, first time poster, long time reader

I was wondering what the opinion out there is on the ability of the ship to Coast along.

See I'm a premium beta backer and in attempting to silent run, I found that when you pushed the throttle to 0 the ship was stationary, am I missing the ability for ships on space to Turn off their engines whilst going at speeds to basically go ballistic?

Or is this not a feature in the game?

See I'd love to be able to line up my destination, a trader or pirate base, and to gunn the engines to pick up speed then just turn them off and wait to get close enough to ambush them, this is all so you don't build up huge amounts of heat trying to get to your target.

Anywho, what do you all think, is this missing in game? Or am I just missing the button or something.

Point your ship at the destination.

Accelerate.

Turn FA off.

Pull throttle back to zero. You can if you wish go silent running AND kill the engines in the systems panel.

Coast along baby, coast along free...

PS -ETA just spotted it's your first post, so welcome!

Welcome to the forums!

Agree with all the above, do be aware though, that there's a bug in Alpha 1.1; whereby the heat mechanics when you coast aren't working.

So if you go into FA-off mode, get up to speed, throttle down, then turn off your engine systems, you coast just fine, but your heat rockets up, and appears to be tied to velocity rather than power drain for some reason. It nullifies the stealth mechanics to a certain degree in alpha 1.1. I've been assured (and have seen for videos on youtube) that this has been fixed in subsequent alpha builds; but it may affect your use of that particular tactic for the single player build (in which my advice is never to turn you engine subsystem off except when completely stationary, or you'll overheat very quickly!).

Yeah, it is fixed in the later builds. In fact, a few days ago I experimented a bit with some of the settings. By accelerating full speed (four pips to the engines), and then turning off first Flight Assist and the Engines module entirely, you can go into silent running, coasting at full speed while hardly heating up at all. With the Shields module turned off, too, you will even drop to 0% heat, the window will freeze up and you can coast indefinitely while being invisible to scanners without the need to ever expel a heat sink.:D

That is going to be pretty exciting for running a blockade. When you are dropped from FSD into normal space by the mass of nearby ships and have to try passing through undetected.

Like this? :)

I made the video to demonstrate the coasting mechanics to someone who asked about it.

Nice demo ;)

Hopefully they will set it so that the engine noises are silent when off. Also when switching off everything would be cool to get low light in cockpit etc with no noise at all. Proper atmospheric.

The engines are indeed silent when they are turned off.

Umm, nope. The 'turbine whine', which depends only on ship speed, is still very audible, even FA OFF zero throttle and even if you turn off the engines from the side panel.

Ah, then it must be the noise from my GPU fans drowning out that sound, thus I did not recognize it.:D

(Yes my old video card has to work that hard to even run ED.)
