Barnacles are living creatures!

Just heard it on Lave radio from Mr Braben himself. So, what does this mean? Hostile, friendly... eggs? What are your thoughts?

Come the revolution this comment will be your downfall while I for one would like to welcome our new ant overlords and offer the confession of Snarfbuckle as a sign of my undying loyalty! :D

It's not like i ATTACKED them. They came into my territory (kitchen) and got stepped on.

I dont go bathing in anthills and hugging termite mounds.

In the ED world they are, like any tree that has fruit.

We should be able to take the eggs and plant them in suitable locations for them to grow.

Animal: Something that animates through it's own volition.

is this an official scientifically accepted definition/?

if so that is 2 things i have learned today..... (and i am a computer biologist with a degree in biochemistry and molecular biology so probably should know this !!!)

Animal: A living organism belonging to Kingdom Animalia that possess several characteristics that set them apart from other living things, such as:

(1) being eukaryotic (i.e. the cell contains a membrane-bound nucleus) and usually multicellular.
(2) being heterotrophic (unlike plants and algae that are autotrophic, an animal depends on another organism for sustenance) and generally digesting food in an internal chamber.
(3) lacking cell wall (unlike plants, algae and some fungi that possess cell walls)
(4) being generally motile, that is being able to move voluntarily
(5) embryos passing through a blastula stage
(6) possessing specialized sensory organs for recognizing and responding to stimuli in the environment

TL,DR: Since they don't move and eat other things I wouldn't say they are animals. Can't tell anything about their cells or sensory organs.
But they are living creatures (see below), the question is: are they intelligent or made by an intelligent race?

Living things are those that display the following characteristics

- an organized structure, being made up of a cell or cells
- requires energy to survive or sustain existence
- ability to reproduce
- ability to grow
- ability to metabolize
- ability to respond to stimuli
- ability to adapt to the environment
- ability to move (not itself but stuff inside it, like plants tracking sun movement)
- ability to respire

We are the bees and meta alloys are the pollen, we pollinate UAs in stations leading the way to the plot of Alien 2 playing out in a local starport near you.

It wasn't a major reveal. It's been obvious that the Barnacles were both organic and 'alive' (for most common/reasonable definitions of 'alive') since they were discovered.

The more interesting question is this. Given the Barnacles have been found on airless worlds and (presumably) didn't evolve there, how exactly did they get there?

Cheers,

Drew.

I'd like to get a look at their root system. Are they part of a much more complicated structure (and are there even more resources under the ground)?

Ok, I was being sarcastic.

YES. Barnacles ARE animals. We have a massive range on them on earth and we eat many.

YES. Spiders are also animals. The most persecuted animal on the planet and if you think the attacks on the Barnacles are going to cause repercussions; just think what the spiders are going to be getting up to here, in say a million years.

Alive doesn't always = sentient, FD designed them to be shot at in order to harvest the alloy's. We were given only one option to harvest, no options to study, no scientific scanning so it's made up as we go along.

Agreed: On earth we hit them with hammers and prise them off of rocks etc.

oh fudge they are living, you know what dreadful event this means though don't you -

barnacle huggers creeping out of the woodwork and saying barnacles have rights...........
