What about the alliance

Do we know what the three sections of the Alliance symbol stands for? My Elite lore is a little rusty.

And i disagree with metatheurgist on the Imperial symbol, it looks just fine. However i'd love a non-shiny version of the Alliance one, so that it matches the more metallic look of the Federation and Imperial symbols.

It looks like the logo of a car manufacturer to me.

True, I suppose.

I think that part of the reason may be that they look too slick. Like corporate logos rather than factional emblems. In reality these things tend to use quite garish, simple, bold colours.

See, this design lark is easy isn't it!;)

That's true. If you can imagine it without the plastic sheen, it has a bit of a NATO vibe to it.

On topic, but also off it a bit, I'd like to see a couple of smaller (say 3 or 4 star) independent systems. Something like the United Baronies of 'X' that is a four star unit that is independent but something like vassal state of the Empire. Or the five star system free trade block of 'Y' that the major players use as a banking and diplomatic neutral ground.

Think places like Switzerland or Luxembourg. Think places like Cuba or North Korea. Think Armenia between Rome and Parthia. Buffer States that live by their own rules but are either subservient to a greater power, too important for either power to let the other have, fill an economic or political need that means all powers are happy to let them live unmolested, or that they are too unimportant and / or would be a drain on the treasury of the big players for them to waste their time and blood annexing them.

I realise I'm probably too late to the party to see this suggestion see the light of day in the game that is probably almost set in stone, but I think 3 big players, 15 or so minor players and the occasional single star system that is allowed to survive because the vagaries and chance of geo politics make them more useful as they are then any other outcome would add some wonderful colour to the game.

I agree with all of it.
Except for the part that you are too late to the party.
There will be independents and some of them might very well own multiple systems. The Elite galactic playing field is huge. I expect there to be a few lost colonies for us to rediscover too. I cannot imagine this not being the case in a huge setting like this. With such an immense open world Braben would be mad not to create a gameworld that is as rich and diverse and colorful as possible. There will more than a few surprises too.

Lost colonies that spawned from the generation ships all that time ago. They may be stuck in a bit of a historical past since they will be alone in the void and trying to build up a colony and therefore not really progressing technologically speaking, probably stuck to the planet for now until we discover them again.
Other independent systems that don't agree with whoever was in control of that system but still being influenced by their neighbours.
Might have a system on the border that changes from one side to the other depending on who is voted into political power - leave it as a federation colony and return to find that the president has been assassinated by the imperials in order to get their man elected and so you return to a new Imperial system.

I want all of it. :)
