Space is big... may be too much big for a game ?

do you remember this video ?

ahhh golden times...

btw look at 5:48

question from Cutter: ''Since space travel will be long and boring... ''
answer from David Braben ''Nobody wants to create a boring game made only of long travel sessions, space travel will not take weeks .. it will take seconds...''

WRONG !

Yesterday it took me 1 hour (real time) to travel from X to Y [mad]

ins't MAYBE the case to create some ''shortcuts'' or another way (may be powerfull long range engines or whatever) to reach some places faster please ?

thoughts ?

.

only thing that takes long is getting to the core.

moving around in the bubble doesnt take much time in a decent ship.
but i would like to note i woulndt mind seeing a boost in supercruise, just like in normal flight.
and it should damage the ship.

Jumps are not the worst, at least you got to press a button every 5 seconds. The supercruise implementation on the other hand is dreadful.

You can get anywhere in populated space in a few minutes (unless you have a useless rated FSD). It only takes a long time to get to distant places to explore them. Making exploring quick and easy would make it pointless.

One hour of travel time is not much. I spend about a week (irl) getting back from around Beagle Point to the bubble.

But instant travel would take the challenge away.

Hutton orbital?
Also current CG station where we are supposed to buy rares from takes ~20 minutes of supercruise to get to.

Thats where opinions differ. I personally love the supercruise implementation. Can't think of a better mechanic myself.

Try IWAR2 then. Their version of supercruise was superior:

- not tied to surrounding masses, meaning there can actually be some skill involved in getting anywhere fast without crashing into planets
- logarithmic speed, set by the pilot
- no stupid interdiction minigame that brings you 100ls from where it started, instead supercruise interdiction was handled with LDSi missiles that would give the target time to prepare for the attack and had limited ammos
- different LDS classes would give you different top speeds, going for military gear made a lot of sense

You hit one of the weird things right on the head, but remember, no one is forcing you to go exploring, no one, if you find it boring then don't do it?
you want to get to the centre of the galaxy? well, its just a black hole there, that's it, what is it you want to see there?

Maybe exploring isn't for you? especially the longer trips? because any shortcuts would suddenly make it all pointless.

To use a real world example, you've always wanted to see paris, but what if you and everyone else could be there within an hour no matter where on the world? would it then be a special location? or would it be an overrun location that takes no effort to get to? Maybe paris is a bad suggestion because it might be the culture, but pic a location you want to go for the atmosphere, if suddenly everyone could go there without any worry or effort? would it be just as special?

I like most of what you have said you don't like though. I like the interdiction mini game, but I have never been pulled back 100LS, maybe 10 or 20, 30 at most.
I am unaware of IWAR2 so can't really comment if I prefer it or not. I find the idea of missiles going 100s of times faster than the speed of light a bit much though as they would have to have thier own FSD drive which I don't like the idea of myself. Its all personal opinion though.

That's about the attention span of your average newfangled high-speed chimp that passes for a human being nowadays.

Back in my day, we had to wait minutes from the game to load on a tape recorder, only to get load error. View attachment 106382

Yeah but we got distracting psychadelic flashing lines across the screen and funky 8 bit music. Which is arguably more entertaining than a lot of games people make these days on its own.

To OP, not sure how you are flying, but I did 1000Ly in an hour yesterday, and that was stopping to scan every star and investigate the system map for anything interesting. Personally, in me very humble opinion everything is fine as it is. The only thing that needs sorting is the route map to allow for manual plots, A to B to C etc.
