Vive Pre - I've got to be doing something wrong. Anyone else?

Vive Pres are trickling out to devs and some members of the press (like me), and I wanted to check and see if anyone here happens to have one and if their experience in ED is the same as me.

Quick problem description: Elite looks terrible. Much, much worse than with the DK2 (which I've been using for about a year). Specifically, everything is monstrously, horribly aliased to hell and back. Jaggies and alias-shimmer are everywhere, on every angled surface, so badly that it's almost impossible to play because it's so distracting.

Things I've tried that don't work: cycling through all available AA methods in Graphics options (a few have some tiny effect but none really help); supersampling to 1.5 or 2.0 (this helps more than anything else, but even at 2x supersampling it's still bad looking, and the frame rate tanks); changing every other graphics option (no settings appear to have any effect on the aliasing); changing the listed resolution from its default setting of 1280x720 to the correct vive pre resolution if 2160x1200 (changes the size of the mirrored desktop window but does nothing on the vive's display).

Running Horizons 64-bit via the Frontier launcher on Windows 10, using a 980ti w/the current 362.00 geforce drivers.

Anyone else running into any display problems with elite and the vive pre? It's difficult to describe how bad it looks—it looks so terribly terribly bad that I feel like I've got to have something misconfigured somewhere. I'll make a thread over in support at some point in the next couple of days, but wanted to ask here first.

I haven't seen info from any Vive pre users in this forum so I fear you may be the first to post.

Maybe try an older graphics driver!

As a member of the press maybe approach frontier directly. They don't tend to answer anyone else's questions in this forum section so you may be waiting a while for them to reply here. Reddit might be another option.

Try contacting noblyspoon who seems to have it working in the above link.

There are others reporting issue on Reddit with ED and Vive pre. It's reported steam has also removed elite dangerous from the vr library just a few days ago.

I never bothered with ED in Steam, so I have no idea what is or isn't going on with the VR compatibility stuff on the steam version of Elite. I just use the launcher version.

Everything works fine—it just looks bad. I can't believe what I'm seeing is the way it's supposed to be.

Posted in that thread. Thanks.

I already bugged 'em once on setup issues (which ended up being my own dumbness anyway), so I don't want to abuse the privilege. Still, if I can't figure out what's going on in the next week or so, I'll ask for help directly.

I would say u will need to set the in game resolution to the native res of the vive or create a resolution in the Nvidia panel for native res..
Then set the in game supersampling to 1.5 (not Nvidia SS).. dont use AA because it will kill the framerate.
2c

Supersampling should be far more of a framerate drag than AA, since supersampling renders the entire frame at a higher-than-native resolution (1.5x or 2x) then downsamples it in order to smooth out edges, while the SMAA and FXAA methods are more targeted instead of whole-frame.

Regardless, neither method helps. Haven't looked at a custom resolution setting; not sure how that works in conjunction with the headset in direct mode via SteamVR, but I'll give it a shot in the AM.

The reason why ppl are using SS now with ED i feel i because there is a resolution mismach going on behind the scenes so even native 1080 on the dk2 looks GASH :-( So 1.5 SS to resolve the issue..
The game needs to natively render to the res of the HMD's then do SS.. we may need to wait for FDEV to do this or there will be HACKING!

Didn't see it already: Make sure the slider (can't remember name) that controls HMD picture towards the bottom is all the way up, it should be slid all the way to the right. It sounds like that's what is going on as that's exactly what happens when it is too the left.

I sure hope this option isn't disabled when using a Vive as I tried it once in my DK2 and it was exactly as you describe.

PS. If this works and you write an article post a link, I always like reading about VR.

EDIT: It's called "Oculus Image Quality", it's a slider. If it doesn't show up when using a Vive then you are screwed until if/when FD supports the Vive. I sure hope this isn't the case but, either it's not there or to the left. Let's hope the slider is present as the alternative means no VR in ED for Vive pre owners/users for a month or two.

I don't know about VIVE but OCULUS was having a Forum where VR owners discuss issues. Better post there.

If you're a member of the press, and are using it with ED for an article etc, I'd suggest you contact Zac Antonaci, or BrettC by Private Message and see if they can get an in-house resource to assist (although who knows if FD have a Vive yet themselves). Would be worth a try. :)

Yep, already got the IQ slider all the way to max. It's yet another setting where fiddling aroudn with it makes it look different, but not necessarily better.

I'll hit em up on Monday, definitely (I usually bug Mike Gapper in PR rather than bothering the devs directly—like I said, I don't want to abuse the privilege). Just wanted to check with the community first to see if anyone else was encountering the issue.

I looked on the Steam VR tags the day they were announced by Valve, and didn't find ED:)H) there. Are you sure it was ever present?

EDIT
1: now all present and correct - http://store.steampowered.com/search/?#term=Elite Dangerous&sort_by=_ASC&vrsupport=101&page=1

2: Lee, do these instructions for running ED with OSVR help, since that is also using SteamVR?

After spending nearly 800 quid on the Vive this has me seriously worried. Let me know if you sort out the issue. It's already a concern that I have a L shaped room to get the lighthouses sorted in this room to give me full tracking. But this, well if it doesn't work 100% it will be returned and I don't say that lightly as I've waited 28 years to realise this technology. Playing Elite on the BBC model B and trying VR on an arcade machine when I was 19, well this brings my gaming dream to fruition. I have plenty of cash to spend, but I won't waste said cash.

Considering the impressions people got from vive at the various places it was shown off with Elite Dangerous, I would think there's an issue on OP's end, so yeah, people were thoroughly impressed and the described issues where not any you heard off, so yeah I wonder what is going on, contact vive support, because it sounds like something is wrong.

What is your eyesight like OP? glasses? is the focus and setup done right?

Heh, yes, eyesight is good and Vive is correctly calibrated—no issues in the set of VR demos it comes with. This isn't a focus issue or anything—the visual effect is exactly like on a regular monitor when looking at a scene with a tremendous amount of aliasing at a distance, where every frame re-draw shifts the jaggies and causes "shimmer" or "sparkle" as the jaggies move around. It looks exactly like the effect shown on the radio tower in this video and on the detail textures in this video. It's pretty much every edge on the screen doing it.

It wasn't happening with the DK2. And I've heard from at least one other person having a similar issue in ED with their Vive Pre.

Frontier support is aware and they've told me they're gonna take a look first thing Monday morning. Whether it's something on my end or on theirs, though, I don't think this is a show-stopping issue, and I certainly wouldn't let it put you off buying a Vive—with the sole exception of ED, everything else about it is pretty damn amazing. Early adopters always get to deal with the crazy issues :)

Bad news indeed, first Oculus and now Vive. Sure hope FD up's their VR chops very soon as it could go further than Horizons in sales, possibly.

Glad Frontier are going to help you out on this and sounds like you are having better feedback than, "we are actively working with valve and will post back if we have an update" which already puts you ahead of the Rift campers.
I am currently having to put up with ED without VR, however the notion of playing it long term outside of a hmd just does not compute any more.

I can see Elite Dangerous with this link

how accurate is that? also VR support is too woolly it needs to be expanded imo, at least with a more info sub menu

ie DK1, DK2, CV1, VIVE

There are some games on that list which i do not believe are currently running on the latest runtimes etc.

PS strike suite zero is on there.... i own that and never knew it was VR supported!.
