Space is big... may be too much big for a game ?

We'll see whether Elite remains my favourite one it's no longer running in a field of one!

Its hardly in a field of one though already .. You have several games to choose from if you want to get your space fix.

In the NMS, SC & ED can all happily coexist. Don't see what the issue is as they are all different games.

As the majority here have already pointed out it does not take THAT long to get around. Even in a Corvette/FDL you can get anywhere in the bubble in less than 30 mins..

That being said, there is one thing that might indicate that the traveling system in ED isnt exactly perfect. Its the fact that when I travel, mostly from star to star, but I do it in SC as well, I tend to switch my monitor to youtube or some other activity. I cant think of any other game I do that with. This obviously breaks my immersion and yet im compelled to do it as long travel seems "boring"? or "tedious"? not sure how to describe it exactly. Its the only activity in ED where I do this "switch to something else" thing. Which does suggest its a flawed system. If it was fun or efficient enough, I shouldnt be thinking about doing something else in the middle of my game.

Anyway something to think about for all those that say traveling in ED is "perfect".

1. To keep from running out of fuel, 5-10% could be set aside as a reserve. Pretty simple.

2. Do you even read what you post before you hit the submit button? Where exactly do you get off calling someone "incredibly stupid"? I already know what your response will be. Something like, " I didn't call you stupid, just the idea". Well no, it's the exact same thing. I don't know who you are, what you do for a living or where you are from, and I don't really care. I sincerely hope you don't talk to people in real life the same way you post here. Where I'm from, if you indiscriminately called people "incredibly stupid", sooner or later you would find your teeth not in their original location.

I quite literally said 'the forums would be filled daily with people whining that they made a jump, ran out of fuel and died because of the incredibly stupid design that lets them use their entire fuel tank', and who EXACTLY would be the incredibly stupid people to IMPLEMENT that design and be the target of those statements? Hmm?

FD, the people making the game, and since you obviously don't realize this, you are far from the first person to suggest that exact same idea. Seriously, try using the search function once in a while, see how many OTHER times someone else has already posted that idea you are about toss onto the forums.

And I don't indiscriminately call people, their actions or their ideas stupid, I'm very discerning about that and only say it when it's actually appropriate. And if someone wants to take a swing, well, violence is how idiots make their point, and I'm not afraid of idiots, except in large groups.

"traveling the bubble is not hard"

tell that to FDL and Corvette pilots.

I currently mostly use my corvette. Granted, it's a lot slower than the DBE or ASP, but eventually, I will get there. I don't mind.
Distances in the bubble are really miniscule, even in a corvette.

Been all over the bubble in a FdL. Its not hard.

OP - i guess Braben's video was from earlier when supercruise was not intended. Backers wanted to travel though, so as I understand rather than microjumps we got supercruise (which personally i prefer to the microjumps idea).

Also presume he was talking about in system travel rather than galactic travel. AFAIK the galaxy was always meant to take a long time to travel around.

I love the feeling of space exactly as it is. Space travel is boring and one needs to learn humbleness to do this. On the other hand, I will never forget how it felt when I returned from my first log distance exploration trip round Barnards Loop. Hearing and seeing the first sounds of civilization was such a relief... space is black and dangerous and being far out, knowing you have to go all the way back, gives you a clue on what this really means to mankind.

So I wouldn't like a change like faster engines or an incredible implausibility drive for those, who just wanna take the lazy approach to the game. I have not yet been to the core, just visiting the big suns ATM. And every time I leave the FSD, there is a certain fear that something may go wrong out there. Getting into a galactic toaster, misjudging a neutron star... whatever.

Though this is technically wrong, E : D is the only game which has the space telling you that there is a bigger truth behind all that and that we are small. And hopefully, that we cannot change or have everything the way we want them to be. Learn humbleness or play EVE Online.

Respectful regards,
Rhombus

You use a mini-van for hauling the kids and all the vacation gear, a sports car for going fast or a land rover for tackling the back-country. Just because you've got a build that excels at something OTHER than rapid travel doesn't make the travel mechanic broken.

I'm sorry, but are you the forum nanny? Why do you care if people whine or post about anything?
No one is forcing to read or respond.
Hardly anyone uses the search feature before they post or we wouldn't have multiple endless threads about combat logging, PvE vs PvP, open vs solo, Robigo, rank grinding, etc...
This is an internet forum. People aren't always going to post things you agree with.
Get over it already.

I don't see the mechanic of using your whole fuel tank to make a massive jum0 as making sense. It's like saying I want to use my entire gas tank in my car to make my trip instantly.

The jumping isn't so bad but I kinda like exploring. I just finished my first little trip out and now that I'm almost home I'm starting to feel a little bit of "road rash" but that isn't a problem with the mechanics. I'm just anxious to get home.

Where I will agree with the OP is that SC is sometimes tedious. I don't mind traveling out to 10k ls but when you see stars like 300k out it gets a bit ridiculous. I kinda wish we had a way to just microjump to the other stars.

Also an idea for reducing some of the distances in known space would be to have something like a jump gate. They would be uncommon and we could still travel the normal way but certain systems could be linked to travel a lot further than you could normally go in a single jump.

You know what happens when everybody ignores whiners and refrain from replying in the opposite view? Games get changed in ways which cater to those few whiners and then majority of core players, who enjoy the game as is leave. This attitude killed many games, Star Wars Galaxies being one of the most prominent. It was the epitome of 'second life in space' games in MMO history but then everyone got to start as Jedis, there was something called the 'combat upgrade' which effectively killed the game.

Drastic changes to how the core game loop plays out kills the game, pure and simple. When someone starts a thread about changing the core game loop, for any game, it has to be opposed by those who like the core game loop.

BTW, for the uninitiated, 'core game loop' means the most basic set of motions you go through to play a game without going into the mechanics. The core game loop for quake 3 for example, would be looking for opponents and shooting them. In ED, it is taking off from a station or a planet surface, jumping through one or several hyperspace tunnels to your desired system, travelling in the system to your target station or planet in supercruise and land. Any major changes to this will make the game something that it's currently not and will effectively kill the game for those who already enjoy it. Things can always be tweaked and made 'a little different' and these can be for the better but unless you have something that absolutely everyone hates, you don't touch your core game loop.

If they made space smaller or you could travel further faster, it would take out the meaning of true exploration. My current session of exploration is at 96 jumps and a total distance of 2,552 Ly. Not far by others standards, but I have surveyed 80 odd of these systems. This would all become meaningless if the galaxy was a lot smaller.

Exploration is one of the key things of the core game, and I am sure that many explorers out there would want to change the distances involved and jumping. If we want to make longer jumps then we can tune our ships or use materials from planets. It all makes sense, and as you know, space is really, really huge, and ED has only implemented a single galaxy; which I think is perfect for now.

I have no qualms about distances or the way we travel, in fact, I prefer it this way.

An auto-pilot would be great.

An alternative would be to suggest (if needed - IMO it's not) that:

- Hyperspace relies upon precise coordinates so that you don't end up inside a star
- Long range jumps are not very precise
- Systems use navigation beacons to help pilots lock onto (remember them - that's where we should pop into space ... out of supercruise; at a nav beacon)

So if you're jumping to a place with a navigation beacon then you can extend your jump range (maybe 2x to 10x depending on your FSD)

If you're jumping out the core - need to do this star by star (no nav beacons)
If you're in the core .. maga jumps (as the navigation beacon helps)

Just my 2cs.

I personally don't think it's needed, but I can see OPs point.
