News Elite Dangerous - Oculus Rift update

My heart jumped... stopped... and now runs with slightly accelerated pace... cant wait to receive my CV1 now :)

Thank you very much, to all people at Frontier Developments for making this possible. Elite will be so much more for me from now on!

This message comes as a major relief as I've been holding onto my oculus preorder, patiently waiting for this post! Thanks for not letting us down FD!! You guys are amazing.

Hi Zac !

Just one question: the version on oculus store will be the exact same version than the one on Steam's and Frontier's store ? I mean will it include compatibility for both the Rift and the Vive ?
From the Ars Technica article:
Braben confirmed to Ars that all three different buying options will include full Rift 1.0 support as well as full SteamVR support for the HTC Vive (though there might be an odd edge case with using SteamVR and the Vive with the Oculus store version of the game).

thanks, so I assume the "odd edge case" means "launch the game from outside the Oculus store if you want to use it on the Vive" :D

Hi Everyone,

We know that you’ve been eagerly awaiting news about Elite Dangerous on the Oculus Rift, which is why we’re pleased to be able to confirm that Elite Dangerous' official support for Oculus Rift's launch SDK will be available with the launch of the consumer version of the Oculus Rift.

Oculus made a post about this on their blog, which you can read here: https://www.oculus.com/en-us/blog/elite-dangerous-brings-deep-space-to-oculus-for-rift-launch/

Before the Oculus launch we will be releasing an updated Elite Dangerous build which will contains support for the latest Oculus SDK, available at no additional charge. All of the existing and future customers that have an Oculus Rift consumer headset will be able to use it.

For our existing and future players who wish to migrate over to the Oculus Store, they will be able to get a free code from the Frontier Store (as they do with Steam keys currently) .

In addition, the Oculus Store will be selling a Deluxe Edition bundle which will include Elite Dangerous, Elite Dangerous Horizons Season Pass, a starter pack of paint jobs and a bobble head. As with Steam, Oculus Store customers will also have to create a Frontier Store account (for no extra charge) as part of the purchase process.

Frontier and Elite Dangerous are at the forefront of VR, and we’re delighted to be able to confirm our support for Oculus Rift when they launch their consumer headset.

As always, I will be on hand answering questions for a while so let me know if you have any questions at all. :)

Thanks,

Zac

Will this build include async timewarp implementation?

From the Arstechnica article, sounds good:

Frontier tells us that the 1.0 native support and the consumer version of the Rift provide tremendous jumps in visual fidelity and tracking smoothness over the prerelease development versions

But nope. This is BAD news. Because if Rift is supported, I'm very tempted to buy one. But then my gaming "PC" (a low end iMac) won't do. So I'll need to buy a second, high-end gaming PC. So now I need a Rift AND a high-end gaming PC. But now my desk isn't big enough for both. So now I need a Rift, a high-end gaming PC AND a new desk. But the room is quite small, so it'll have to be custom-made....

Maybe if I just sold my apartment and just lived in VR, is that an option?

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.

With the SAO references Palmer have been throwing out I'm guessing living in VR won't be an option, it will be mandatory.

Great stuff:). Delighted to hear this. It makes perfect sense for one of the most impressive vr experiences to be available to both Rift and Vive users. Even better, Rift and Vive users will be able to share the same cockpit! The more games that support both of these popular head mounts the better. Well done Frontier, cheers.

Will the Rift only work if you play through the Oculus store or will it work through Steam?

Here the answer:

Sooo...is this in lieu of a dev update?

It is exciting and important and all...but given the cost of Rift and the rig to support it, I don't think too many of the player base are really all that interested in having day one support for the Rift.
