Thanks for the newsletter. :)

I wonder how many ships we are going to see? I really hope they close off the cash exploits that have existed for this release. If we see something like that in the next I fear its really going to ruin everyone's experience.

It's not just you. I must say that I think the stars are still "to big" though. Stars are "points of light" not "small discs in the sky". It could have to do with the FOV but we'll see.

Actually I take that back. It's first SP scenario, it has been looking this way for some time already, so it still might be just painted skybox. We will have to wait for A4 and confirmation to see. Also it is just dev version, I expect last version will look much better.

At least we now know for sure how many systems there are in the 200 cubic LY in A4: 5 of them. Which is pretty much what most of us were speculating. Well, those who managed to not get confused about cubic LY, at least.

*wonders who is the first person who will triangulate the cube location... I'm pretty sure that there are not too many places with exactly 5 star systems in a 200LY cube.

Lots of astronomers smart cookies here. :)

...sigh....

A 200LY cube it ain't. It is a lump of space of 200 cubic LY. We have not been told the shape. It could be very long and thin: 200LY x 1 LY by 1 LY. It could be a cube 5.84803547643LY on each side. It could be a sphere, or a slightly bigger than lifesize model of David Braben. We don't know.

Thus there are an infinite number of potential locations in our galaxy. Give or take a couple.

It's probably early days regarding the look.
Having said that, am I right in thinking that individual stars can be selected through the cockpit canopy, via the galactic map some how?

... Or did I just make that up!??

Yes, early days, but since this is how the stars have looked since "day one" I just want to put it out there. Shouldn't be that hard to "fix". The question is if they intentionally want that look or not.

Yes, I think there are plans to be able to select stars somehow right from the skybox. That might not be the most effective way of doing it, but that's another question.

"Was it this one? Nope...This one? Nope...Aha! Here it...no wait that's not right...hmmm...I'm positive it was over here somewhere..."

This is something that looks a lot better in EVE Online IMO.

EVE:

ED:

Reducing the stars size in ED with about 30-40% and adding lots of even smaller ones behind would create a much more pleasing image with greater depth to it.

I'm with you on this one. I play EVE too but even there the fake starfield is very unrealistic (but pretty). Without a powerful telescope like hubble, every single star will be a single pixel in size, no matter if you play at 800x600, 1920x1080, 4K or even 8K. I also hope we'll see HDR in the final product, looking into the sun like that should black out pretty much everything except the sun.

Think of it, it would be pretty interesting if looking into the sun would blind you so much that only the HUD would be there to assist you,

Anyways, it's alpha, and this can be tweaked fairly easily later on. I hope we get more grayish space-rock colors later on though instead of the brown ones. Small rocks without an atmosphere will turn greyish in space from the solar radiation, it's inevitable.

I think a cube is a pretty safe bet, especially if we take this image into consideration. ;)

I keep reading stuff about cash exploits every now and again?
Is there a secret cash exploit thread I've missed down the line?

The last major 'cash exploit' I executed recently, was when I tea-leafed someone else's alcoholic stash of cargo after it was jettisoned accidentally during a scrap they were involved in. I then made a run for it back to the station so I could make coin. (contested space)

... errr, it might have been an NPC, but sorry to who ever that was by the way. :)

That is what you get when people don't do honest trade the Imperial way. Just saying. A typical result of not having the right ship for the job.

Okay, I'll stop now. :D

I agree!

SOHO picture, star background does look more like the PotW background than Eve.

Well, the more I read on this, and in reference to the peek of the week and the dimming down of blinding light from stars closeup etc, it makes sense that the canopy has special viewing properties that can be adjusted and controlled via the user. For example, adjusting viewing levels for the magnitude of stars visible etc.
Maybe special viewing systems that allow for visually detecting different gas emissions coming from stars or asteroids. Not to mention cloaked ships, if there is such a thing!
