Grieving Exploration Players?

People who cant defeat anything else but unarmed defenceless ships, finding it funny to do so until a pilot who can actually fight comes along and they combat log in their corvettes and anacondas

I have grieved for every lost explorer. Why is it wrong to be sad now?

...greifing however, that is a serious hypothetical issue that I am theoretically opposed to. Once it actually happens to explorers I will put that theory to the test.

Hi,

There's been a number of notorious cases, first CMDR that got killed at Sag A*. The return of a famous explorer doing a photoshoot amongst a few others.
What they fail to realise is they never get remembered but we all know it was Anuranium that went to kill said person attacking people at Sag A*.

As to who, presumably any number of people: Those who hate challenge, prey on misery, enjoy bullying others etc.

In this case (the one I think you are referring to) the arguement is role-play vs killing unarmed ships with 12+ hours of gametime lost.
Which side you come down is up to you, I'm not wanting to call it grieving/griefing or whatever because I've long since said the difference between griefing and killing is having a reason for it. If you just kill Patreus supporters asking them to defect first then you are roleplaying. If you kill anyone for lulz you are griefing (in my opinion). It just depends on if you accept the role-play, for me the act of limiting access to one of the exploration marvels is the sticking point since I have always maintained I believe in a free-to access galaxy where players and factions don't get territory. Got put off Eve because you need a map and guide to avoid places where there's a clan performing kill on sight.
I'd support said player roleplay normally but in territory arguments I'm against it, especially the whole Queen of Sagittarius A* part, the other things is yes she gives warnings to the 99% who don't know or care who she is but it's very rare for explorers to be attacked outside the bubble so some fall victim to these "silly people".

Note: If you are not referring to the case I think then disregard the last paragraph.

Who would do that?

Griefing is the act of abusive or bullying behavior because of the lack of consequences caused by the pseudo-anonymity of the internet. It is normally performed by people that feel helpless or are in some way abused in the physical world. They are often the victims of bullies. They get a sense of empowerment from being able to negatively impact someone else, especially when there is a lack of effective punishment for their behavior.

Explorers make an ideal potential target since the majority of them go unarmed in ships that are optimized targets as a side effect of making them optimized for long distance exploration. They tend to have slower sublight drives, weaker shields and a lack of weapons; what better target for someone that wants an unfair fight?

I've been on the receiving end of it (first time just on the sunny side of 20klys from home) , and sure, it is a -move on the part of some players whose idea of "play your way" differs from mine, but tbh I don't see the problem, primarily because:

a. choosing to fly defenceless/boostless was my own call, no-one forced it on me
b. playing in open, there is the implicit assumption of risk, no-one forces me to play open, I only choose to do it when I want the extra adrenaline, and don't mind losing my cargo/exploration data/time/etc (the threat of which increases the excitement), and
c. hopefully it will all become moot once the thargoids show up and start attacking us anywhere in the galaxy, even in solo (ok, might be wishful thinking on my part :p)

edit: I also consider that someone who is willing to schlep themselves out that far with heavy engines/weapons/etc (i.e. gimped jump range) has invested a fair bit of time and effort into doing so, and isn't just hanging in the starter systems vaping sidewinders

Very well said. It is difficult to take an objective view towards griefing because of its nature but these individuals usually have low self esteem and griefing is a mechanism for them to retain a degree of control in their lives. I prefer to avoid judging people, and instead attempt to understand their motives first. Of course in most walks of life this behaviour would be unacceptable but in an open style game like ED it is what it is.

Yeah, "A" rate my Asp when I go out and keep her armed. She can't jump as far as the lighter builds, but I don't care as I am out there to see things and explore. I bounce back and forth from Open and Solo when exploring. I like to bump into other explorers out in the deep at some of the more traveled to sights. But I am ready to fight if need be, or run.

While greifing is a real problem I dont believe the reasoning is just because some loser has nothing better to do when it applies to Sag A. Any player setting out to kill explorers could almost claim insanity if not going to a specific location.

The problem as I see our galaxy is not only in a constant state of war through the power play system but this combat mentality is encouraged and rewarded. Now that alone is not a terrible thing and is not a call for change but it is important to note the game promotes killing for territorial power.

The center of our galaxy is arguably one of the most famous locations apart from Sol itself and as such attracts a large group of visitors. However this location is free from all goverments and therfore all laws. These losers and greifers do not attack there simply for the laughs but because it is an unclaimed and unregulated area of space in a galaxy where war is a way of life for settling boundary issues.

To put this in modern context imagine a great landmark like stonehenge or yellowstone were set to the same rules that everyone is allowed to visit even in their personal tank if they wish and given no punishment if they kill someone in said tank.

Until such time as Sag A is declared a galactic monument or at minimum given a treaty similar to the Antarctic Treaty System* people will continue to lay unfounded claim to this area. As sad as it is the people who do this are almost guided to by in game logic.

I have no idea what anybody would want to claim anything in game as theirs.

I feel justified in claiming my house as mine as well as my PC and controversially, my cat. I am at a loss to comprehend the desire to own something in a game. I don't even own the ship I have been exploring in the last 24 days and I don't care to. It isn't even a ship, it's an interface to a game concept.

Have you ever been proud of a first discovery tag? Similar idea
