Calling All Pirates: The First Great Heist...

Explorers will be opening new territory and selling information about the same. Factional powers might be very interested about this or feel threatened by expansion possibilities that might upset power balances. It could even be that explorers are funded/protected by the factions in addition to working independently.
Pirates, organised or freelance, might not be the only human threat an exploration enterprise might face. I hope that disputes about new system ownership generates bountiful game playing opportunities. I know some players want a peaceful life soaking up the light from unknown suns but what they see and know will have real value.

The Frontier is a dangerous place for everyone. ;)

Just my daydreaming guys.

I like the way you think. Finding new lands for major powers was after all very important in the past. Why should it not be so in the future. I am attracted to the idea of factional conflict and expansion. Hopefully the major powers will be able to expand over time. For only then will we feel part of a living universe!

Yaarrr! This all sounds like fun, but I'm left wondering about Frontiers P2P grouping system. Are we all guaranteed to be in the same instance? Seems unlikely..

Finally, between the group of the explorers and the group of the pirates, it emerges an observation: it is the triumph of the multi-players mode. Beyond these two groups, the game will take all its meaning with the multi-players mode. As wanted by David ...

I wonder who will be brave enough to run weapons, ammo and other supplies to both sides, and make a killing? :D

This won't work, because all the explorer/trader company has to do is fill their instance with their own guys (or at least have the majority). That way any attacker will always be massively outgunned. Or just go friends only.

It could only work if it was all pre-arranged taking numbers in to account :)

Not necessarily. The explorers will have to split up if they wont to work efficiently. No group is guaranteed to end up in the same instance (even if they are officially grouped together.) I would imagine that if you had exactly 32 players in your group and all went to the same place, you wouldn't all be in the same instance (even though you all could fit in.) There has to be some unpredictability there to avoid people gaming the system.

They may make it so that no more than, say, 10 players from a single group could be in the same instance.

Which just about maxes out Multiplayer as its working now...

Luckily I suspect that preying on the explorers is a massive waste of time for pirates. The only reason to do this would be the joy of griefing those who are creating something / doing something hard.

The explorers will not be carrying valuables, only fuel, food and possibly some repair parts. Any organised sabotage will just be kicking down a sandcastle and laughing at spoiling somebody else's fun.

But you can demand a random :)

Seriously, I can imagine the sh*t storm now if they get heavily pirated - awesome :D

Personally, I think miners will be more worthwhile :)

I disagree.
I think it's the proposed supply line that are the pieces of eight in this case. Ransom, taxing, mugging - whatever you want to call it - could be very lucrative for business types on the frontier. The frontier belongs to the bold and some of them are also brazen. Explorers either need to cross it or be supplied through it.
For this reason, gringo, you must pay.

Piracy is not griefing. In addition, preventing castles being built, be they sand or not, has the possibility for some excellent game play in terms of factional politics and conflict.

I fully agree with you. All the time reading this thread i wonder what could somebody gain by attacking an explorers ship. The only valuable asset might be the ship itself with its precious sensor systems and long range capacity.

But then an explorer might have a good idea where somebody with a criminal record could hide from the authorities (for example a dark system, that nobody else knows about, yet). So mabe if asked nicely and for a little fee i could tell... ;)

Much of this is still speculation. The great expedition doesn't know what sort of supplies (if any) it will need, so the pirates don't know how lucrative it will be. The expedition they are discussing has already been firmly accepted to be something of a dry run for the real game and at this stage they have no idea how to organise it, what they will need, how far out they can feasibly extend a supply route, good ship loadouts, which ships are the best for exploration etc. They don't even know if they will need a supply line, which is what the original post was most concerned with.

Similarly, we pirates have no idea about piracy yet! In fact we can't even speculate how a raid on their expedition will work until they work out how their expedition will work.

The dry run expedition will be met with a dry run pirate assault.

However, i like the idea of a big heist, i just doubt that explorers could be a worthy target for it. Maybe look for a way to steal the emperor's jewels is a more interesting choice. Just imagine the headlines in the newsfeeds. A pirate who could do something like that should gain some reputation. ;)

I guess teaming together into a pirate gang might help to archive any high set goal of this magnitude.

... defenseless exploration and cargo vessels loaded with provisions...
Defenceless maybe not, but capable of defending against a dedicated attack? I think the sort of ships that would be best for exploration won't be combat focused, certainly any ships loaded with cargo to keep the fleet going won't be.
I'm going to be in the exploration fleet, and depending on exact game mechanics, will be bringing a combat-focussed warship. Who knows what we'll find out there; I'm going to be built to repel a dedicated attack without needing resupply.

I hope you do find us, I'd hate to get bored if there aren't any aliens.
