Xbox Live now supports full cross-platform play - time to look at bringing the separate Xbox and PC/Mac communities together?

As announced here: https://news.xbox.com/2016/03/14/letter-chris-charla-idxbox-updates-gdc/

Cross-Network Play

First, in addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we’re enabling developers to support cross-network play as well. This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks – including other console and PC networks.

Of course, it’s up to game developers to support this feature, and Xbox Live players will always have the option of choosing to play only with other Xbox Live players. We’re thrilled to confirm that Psyonix’s Rocket League will be one of the first games to take advantage of this new capability by enabling cross-network play between Xbox One and PC players, with an open invitation for other networks to participate as well.
Please FDev, bring the separate communities together: more Player Group co-ordination, more CMDRs in CQC matches, more CMDRs in Open play, and bigger friends lists! :)

Edit - many news articles:

Bringing people together would be great. The only issue is whether or not the PC version would be held back as far as updates go, due to the crazy policies of Xbox live.

Also, the windows store games are gonna be horrible if they keep their current plans. No sli/xfire support, no modding, no true full screen mode, etc.

In the Recent Lave radio interview, braben stated that the PC and Xbox are synced up now (with ED1) and when horizons drops they would be synced up as well for ED2.

This idea would be wonderful, but it must be implimented with two open modes, one that is everyone and one that is just PC or Xbox, so those Xbox players that feel intimidated by a HOTAS have some place to go.

When i Log in on my Xbox i want to see:

Open
Solo
Xbox Only
Group

My dream. Also i dream of a fully customizable controller. I have weird dreams.

I read the article early today but iirc it says that xbox wants its users to have the option of xbox live only, so that would be the case. But please, please, please FDev I believe everyone wants this. And please, please, please XBox we want HOTAS.

Disclaimer: I speak for no one when I say "everyone" and "we" except me and everyone I talk to. :)

Only if it does not lead to any form of downgrade or slowed down updates.

But I dont trust microsoft I feel its part of there evil plan to put PC into there stupid walled garden with universal windows app that diables freedom and modding...

Would be awesome but as above it'd slow the updates as I believe MS require several layers of testing above and beyond what FD currently do before they allow a new release to surface. Don't expect this until at least 2 years time when all major content has been added... I've been wrong before though. :D

Hmm, on thinking about it they may make it enabled for CQC or some limited aspect of the game, possibly some unique co-op training missions or test-areas. Above still applies for the main release though.

I will state this again:

In the Recent Lave radio interview, braben stated that the PC and Xbox are synced up now (with ED1) and when horizons drops they would be synced up as well for ED2.

So our platforms have the same game. If they wanted to they could turn off the ability to join the full Open if PC was out of Sync with the Xbox

This. And keep the current Open Xboxplay mode for:
  • The X1 CMDRs who don't want to play with PC/Mac CMDRs.
  • When Open Crossplay is disabled (X1 ED version doesn't match with PC/Mac).

If I was being sarcastic I'd reply: Because 3+ months out of sync is pretty short, that's fine...

But yeah I saw that interview.
In seriousness we have no idea if Braben means the background sim or the game since these commentaries overlap a fair bit. We will only truly know if the sync remains once 2.1 comes out but historically the x-box has lagged behind pc updates. All Im saying is history does tend to repeat and I have been following Developer comments for some time

You are confusing "synced" up with "cross platform". Both platforms affect the same BGS, but a PC player and Xbox player will never meet each other regardless of mode being played. There is effectively an Xbox open/groups and a PC open/groups with no ability to switch between them. This update would allow players to all play together in a universal open or group.

We have been on the same update schedule since 1.4, the only updates that have been different have been bug fixes for our respective gaming devices. The basic game has remained the same. The overall version is what needs to be in sync, that's why you can run PC/Mac with the same game, they both may have different bugs, but the game is the same.

In reality, in order to sync the two, you just need two separate teams, which is sounds like they have.

i really need to re-listen to that chunk of the interview again.

also, thanks for your polite reply, i hope i do not sound like an at when i talk about this. Its silly to get upset about a game, but this one thing bugs me for some reason. I think it might be due to me being an old school PC player, but with life and kids, i don't have the time or desire to fiddle around with my PC anymore. It also could be that there are so many wonderful community things happening on the PC side that i would like to do one day.

I guess what i want to say is this games success lives or dies with its comunity, and the community as a whole is great, i just think the whole family needs to be together.

Yes, i know.

In order for us to all play together the game versions need to be "synced" so we are all playing in the same version. He stated in that interview that they are, and have been, and will be when horizons drops for us Xbox'ers.

anyway, thats what i meant by "synced" i hope that clears it up.

No worries, I also would very much like to see cross-play, I just like to stem the flow of hype constructively and realistically. Yes it'd be amazing to see cross-play in 2016 but I just don't see how FD can persuade MS to change their policy <- if this is indeed the sticking point, i'm not 100% sure but I believe that was the thing people brought up last time this was discussed...

My only comment would be that traditionally console users haven't faired well against PC players due to the input methods used. (KB/Mouse >>> xbox controller for FPS games). However, as ED isn't a twitch based game and you can use an XBox controller on the PC then in theory it should be evenly matched. (Although a slight edge to PC users as they typically have more buttons / KB to augment their contols)

That aside, the more the merrier IMO ...

Copy & Paste from another thread...

(We should merge these discussions...)

I believe FD very much want to do crossplay since that is what they said back when the Xbox version was announced. Why wouldn't they want that after all? Back then it wasn't an option. They never gave a straight answer for why, but I would bet that it had to do with simply not being allowed to mix the networking by Microsoft back then. So yes, I pretty sure they will try to go for it now. When is another question...I'm guessing this is going to be the new "they will never support Oculus Rift" until they eventually announce it. :D

Different controllers have never been the deciding factor for not doing crossplay...and the same can be said about hardware limitations. These reasons are something the players have been using in their disscusions for or against. FD themselves have never said it. (The article when they talked about separating the CQC tournament competition between controllers and joysticks is NOT the same thing).

People on PC alone are already playing the game on wildly different rigs with all kinds of different control inputs. Many of them Xbox controllers. Some mouse and keyboard...some even just the keyboard. Yes, they exist believe it or not! ;) Also, many PCs will undoubtedly be even worse in terms of performance compared to an Xbox One. These machines have no problems playing together...or at least this isn't something people are debating about.

The main reason for not having crossplay have always been the walled off networks between platforms IMO.

This news changes that.
