Returning home soon... Concerned about NPC ram and scan

After almost 2 months of exploring, I'm finally going to start back for the bubble. However, I've heard tell of a bug affecting station security called the NPC ram and scan. I am deeply concerned that this bug could end up costing me my ship, and the months of exploration data I've accumulated (many first discoveries: dozens of terraforming candidates, multiple water worlds, and my very first earthlike I found last night). Needless to say, I would be completely devastated if I were to lose it all because of a bug.

I have 2 fears about this bug:

1) Station security rams me and does siginifant damage to or destroys my ship.

2) (my biggest fear) Station security rams me and gets himself destroyed, resulting in a bounty on my head and the station obliterating me.

What precautions can I take to keep my ship safe from this bug? If I fly below the speed limit, will that prevent me from getting a fine/bounty if #2 happens? Will putting 4 pips to shields be enough to prevent any damage? (I'm in an Asp Explorer with D3 shields.)

I happen to be equipped with 4 heat sink launchers. Would firing those off minimize my chances of being scanned? Are there any other precautions I can take?

Would appreciate any advice you can provide.

I'd suggest returning home to a system you are allied with to reduce the chances of interdiction. Also try to find one with a station less than 200ls away to decrease the time you spend in supercruise. I'm not aware NPC's near stations scan and ram, only interdictions.

If you are not speeding then even you destroying the ship wont give you a bounty

Head for an outpost type of station - very unlikely to meet any ram and scan security there! But if you must go to a main station keep your speed below 100ms as soon as you are inside the no fire zone. In fact dropping to 85ms is a good speed as this allows a margin for any tailpipe bandits that might cause you to increase your forward momentum! Personally, I'd be more concerned about NPC & Human Pirates, especially if you intend to cross a lot of occupied space to get to a specific system before selling your data. Fly safe CMDR :)

- go to an outpost. the chances of system security at an outpost are nearby zero

- full pips to shield, and going under 100 m/s makes you safer, comitting a crime - system security won't get killed if they bump into you.

- the scan-ram of system security right now is annoying, but i haven't lost a ship through it - even not an racing eagle without shields.

PS: the safe harbour list is always worth it to look upon return: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=164893

In the hundreds of times I've entered a station, I've only ever been ram-scanned twice. Both times I took no hull damage and got no bounty. A fine once, but no bounty. I'd be more concerned with interdictions.

If you are not in a large ship, you can land at an outpost, no ram-scans there.

Don't forget to request docking. After a while not using stations you could easily forget that on the way in.

Since 1.2 I have never been rammed by a scanning ship near a station if I keep my speed below 100 m/s inside the no-fire zone.
Did a couple of speed dockings (as much as one can do such flying Anaconda [hehe]), one of them included a loud bang & 200 Cr fine for reckless flying.

For a while, before Horizons launch, station security ships used to ram the station (but not me) quite often.

Thank you all for your replies. Feeling much more confident now, and I am relieved that I don't have to worry about the 2nd scenario happening. That was my biggest fear. :p

Ill post an update when I get back home, might a couple days though (I'm about 3,000 light years from Sol!)

FutronBob - I approve of your avatar.

Z...

Thank you, yours is nice as well! Love classic space and Futuron Lego (which my CMDR name is based off of :p), though I don't actually own any of the sets... My profile pic is a screenshot of my (former) Lego Universe character in my favorite outfit. :p I miss that game. :(

Well, I made it back home to Ray Gateway without incident! Cashed in my data for a total of just over 9 million credits. Not a whole lot considering I was out for 2 months (50 hours of time in-game), but I really enjoyed it. And seeing that precious "First Discovered by FutronBob" over my earthlike world? Absolutely priceless.

Ill be going through my screenshots (aka the REAL reason I went out in the first place :p) over the next few days and make a post about my expedition with the best ones sometime soon!

welcome back, cmdr! the only good things about exploration payout is that those cr are the only one counting for your exploration rank :)

enjoy your bubble time!
