Game creation for thickos?

Does anyone know of any user friendly, easy to learn game creation software that isn't outrageously expensive?

I bought Gamemaker Studio a couple of months back and although it has a good reputation and strong user-base, its just way waaaaaaaaaaay too complex for my old and uneducated brain to learn. after 2 months of trying to use it, following guides and even following books, I've tossed it in as I'm getting nowhere and just feeling frustrated and stupid.

a friend did give me the name of a simple to use 2d game maker but that has a monthly fee to use it. stuff that, I want a one price and its yours forever, not a damn subscription!

You could try the Unity game engine http://unity3d.com/ There are lot of tutorials on their site and is easy to get in to and follow. is free and only have to pay if you relese a game and make over $100K I believe.

Udemy do a lot of courses for it too https://www.udemy.com/unitycourse/ this one isn't bad and just started it, can pick up on there for about 20 quid or so

Hope that helps and good luck

You can make 2D games with it also, when you start and create a project have option to select either 2D or 3D assets to use with project and can lock the camera to postilion that suits 2D. The project in 2d has number or layers i.e. Background, mid-ground & foreground and is built in sprite editor you can import and edit images in to use in your game. The Forums on the Unity site be better place to ask for advise and they're very helpful.

Concur. I'm taking a course that lasts 250 hours and goes through the creation, step by step, of six games: from a text based on to a Co-op Online 3D sand box game.

Unity is a nice engine - I'm also trying to learn it - but if you're looking for something simpler perhaps RPG Maker? Its obviously focused on RPG games (jrpgs to be exact) but that focus also makes it easier to pick up and use.

I purchased that course in a sale :), I havent started it yet as I'm just over halfway through a C# course which I am getting through slowly.

I was hoping the C# knowledge would give me a boost with the unity side of things.

I have an idea for a fun little sim that has been buzzing around in my head for the last 6 months or so and from what I have seen I reckon I could get a nice little demo setup in Unity, using the asset store (as I am no artist!) - theres just the small matter of learning how to do it first!

What C# course are you doing? I've been looking for a decent one for a while.

This one : http://rbwhitaker.wikidot.com/c-sharp-tutorials

I also bought the 'players guide' book, written by the same guy.

It was recommended several times on reddit.

It has been very enjoyable so far and I have learned a lot, what always happens to me doing courses like these though is that at some stage I hit a brick wall, it is then up to my determination as to whether I can smash the wall down and keep learning.

the first brick wall that is facing me is Classes, Objects and contructors, for some reason I am getting stuck on this, not so much on the practical side, but more on the theory side of things.

My friend created a few cool 2D multi-platform games with Unity for free. They were even good enough that he sold quite a few copies of his games on the Android market and Desura, but not quite enough to justify paying for Unity yet I don't think. He's self taught but has some graphic design, 3D modelling and programming skills. If you're a one man software company, I think those three disciplines are a must. Even for 2d games, if you can generate your sprites from 3d models the final product is going to be so much better for far less effort. Master Blender, then create your game.
