I can't fly

A horrible realisation struck me as I was playing Incursion for the umpteenth time - I'm really not very good at this game. The difference between my current flying, dulled by years of rpgs and strategy games, is far removed from that of my perceived inner ten-year-old.

I've never got past wave 8 and generally I don't make it past wave 7, and I seem to be getting worse not better. I have all these knobs and buttons on my joystick, but I really don't know how to use them in anger, despite watching many youtube videos. Whereas some aces can complete Incursion, I struggle without seemingly doing anything different. I can't shake off attacking ships and more than one ganging up on me seems to lead to near-instantaneous destruction.

So, does anyone know of a video that explains how to do the basics of combat from a general standpoint? Like how to engage, how to throw off pursuit, how to avoid enemy weapons, those sort of things. I feel like I've been given a big gun but not told how to turn the safety off or which end to point away from me.

Keep practicing, learn to use energy distribution, e.g. the more energy you have in systems the stronger are your shields, more energy to engines increases your speeds both top and maneuvering, more energy to weapons cools weapons faster. Learn to use vertical and lateral thrusters.

Just in case - you have the best maneuverability when your speed is at the blue markings that are to the left from the speed bar.

Don't worry, I am also completely useless.

I could only get to wave 5 in incursion using a joypad, so shelled out for a hotas controller expecting to get some improvement. But no, changing controller from the pad has actually made me worse, and I need to completely relearn how to fly.

It's even worse when you know exactly what to do, but I know I just need practise.

I'm giving up until the beta comes out, as I'm fairly sure there are tweaks to the flight mechanics after Alpha 1.1 and I don't feel like learning bad habits if I'm going to relearn.

Energy bombs and missiles, all the way home.

trust me you are not alone. I can hardly keep target in my sight. even if i managed to do so, i could hardly get any hits on them =/

Hmmm, you've done pretty well if you've got to level 8 without knowing how to use the joystick buttons in anger ... once you figure that out (or get the joystick set up to suit your play style) I think you will be unstoppable

From what I remember of Alpha 1.1 this is to be expected - the balancing is already much better in Alpha 3. If you're getting to waves 7/8 of Incursion then you are well prepared for Beta.

And this is why premium beta was given access 1 month early . ED is a pretty challenging game to play, with a fairly steep learning curve to begin with. Throwing you into beta cold would be mean . We alphas had single player only for a month or so too

It was very easy to dodge from missiles in Alpha 1 and Alpha 2 if I am correct. However, it became almost impossible since the release of Alpha 3.

My best so far is getting to wave 7, and i am stil getting used to the x52 pro joystick, i am not sure i ever beat this senario before the beta is upon us :-/

Darn those nimble fed fighters, need to practice to defeat the Arch enemy.:S

You still have enough time to master the single player.

Many people have not got further than wave 7, some not even to 7.
