The Buckyball Racing Club presents: Spring Break! (March 18th through 26th)

OBJECTIVE
Within a specified time frame, visit as many stations with Tourism economies as possible, while carrying as many "passengers" as possible.

RULES & PROCEDURES
  • Choose a certification class (see below) and acquire an appropriately outfitted ship.
    • Ships are required to outfit and use a fuel scoop during the event.
    • Ships that do not equip shields will incur a safety penalty to their pilot's final score.
  • Park your ship at Slackagers' Hangout in the Exigus system.
    • Notice: Slackagers' Hangout does not have shipyard or ship outfitting facilities.
  • Declare your availability to escort students in this thread. This is identical to how one might enter a race, as described in the How to Enter section of the official Buckyball Racing Club website, even though this event is absolutely *not* a race.
  • Fill your cargo holds with Biowaste or Hydrogen Fuel "passengers".
  • Take a screenshot of the Commodities screen showing your cargo and CR balance.
  • Plan your route.
  • Take a screenshot of your ship's Modules tab to document the presence of a fuel scoop.
  • Take a screenshot of your ship in the launch position at Slackagers' Hangout.
  • Visit as many Tourism stations as possible before your Tour Time elapses.
  • Take an arrival screenshot on the pad at each station you visit.
  • Do not repair your ship or purchase fuel during the event; spending credits in any way disqualifies your certification attempt.
  • Visit as many stations as possible while there is still time available.
  • After the Tour Time for you class has elapsed, return to Slackagers' Hangout and take a screenshot on the pad to document your return time.
    • Continue visiting stations as long as you have Tour Time remaining, even if your it will elapse before you can reach another station.
    • If you return to Slackagers' Hangout when there was still Tour Time available at the previous station, your certification attempt will be disqualified.
    • If you return to Slackagers' Hangout before the end of your Tour Time, your certification attempt will be disqualified.
  • Also take a screenshot of the Commodities tab on your return to the Exigus system, documenting that you still have your passengers and that you have spent no credits during the tour.
  • To calculate your Certification Safety Rating:
    • count the number of tourism stations visited;
    • in any system where you visited more than 1 station add +1 per station beyond the first (e.g., if you visit 2 stations in a single system, you get a +1 bonus; visiting 4 stations in a single systems grants a +3 bonus);
    • if not equipped with shields, subtract a penalty as indicated by your class;
    • multiplying the total by the number of tons of "passengers" carried;
    • then multiply the result by your remaining hull percentage.
  • Also calculate a Tardiness Time:
    • subtract your tour start time from your tour finish time to find your tour duration;
    • then subtract the Tour Time for your class from that;
    • For example, if you start a Cobra tour at 18:12:00 that ends at 19:03:41, your tour duration is 00:51:41, from which you subtract the 40 minute Tour Time for the Cobra, resulting in a Tardiness Time of 00:11:41.
  • If for any reason you and your passengers must use escape pods to abandon your ship (for example, because of pirate attack), immediately report the number of passengers requiring rescue in this thread.
  • Submit screenshots and other required info for your certification attempt to this thread, via forum private message to Seneh, or emailed to jhyrryl <symbol: commercial at> buckyballracing <symbol: dot> org <symbol: dot> uk.
    • Ideally, your screenshots will be collected into an Imgur album and appropriately sorted.
    • If you record your attempt with video, please extract screenshots with readable timestamps from the recording.
  • Submitted evidence must include:
    • Your CMDR name.
    • Your forum name if not the same as your CMDR name.
    • The certification class of your attempt.
    • Your ship's name.
    • Game mode (Open, Solo, Private Group)
    • All of the screenshots indicated above.
    • Whether or not FSD Injection was used.
    • Whether or not you incurred a missing shields penalty.
    • Number of Passengers carried.
    • Total stations visited.
    • Total bonus for secondary stations.
    • Final hull percentage.
    • Your calculated Certification Safety Rating.
    • Your calculated Tardiness Time.
  • Attempts cannot begin prior to 18 March 3302, nor end later than 26 March 3302.

CERTIFICATION CLASSES
There are 8 non-faction ships suited to chauffeur work, but 2 are not available due to contractual limitations. Safety ratings for each certification will be calculated independently, as each certification requires touring for a different minimum time frame.

FAQ
Q: Some systems list a Tourism economy, but none of the stations there do. Do they still count?
A: No. These systems have planetary tourism sites that are not yet implemented. It is recommended that you scout out any such systems ahead of time, but here are details for some of the relevant systems within 75 LYs of Exigus.

Q: What about systems that only have Outposts, preventing the Yacht and Party Barge classes from landing?
A: If you can't land at a station, you can't improve your score from visiting it. Here's a list of relevant systems, which may include systems with both outposts and larger stations.

Q: Does a system with two Tourism stations count double?
A: Not quite. Scoring is for total stations visited, not systems. But there is a bonus for visiting multiple stations within a single system.

Q: Why are fuel scoops required?
A: Because it's an exciting, but very safe aspect of racing that we can use to promote racing to our passengers!

Q: What if there's a tie?
A: This isn't a race, but it's worth noting that a prospective employer who is evaluating which of two pilots to hire, who happen to have the same Safety Certification Score, is likely to pick the one with the lowest Tardiness Time.

Q: What if it's still a tie?
A: There are no ties when there isn't a competition!

Q: Can I use FSD Injections?
A: Yes.

Q: Isn't that unfair?
A: To whom? This is not a race!

Q: Imperial ships are sleek, why can't they be used for this?
A: Imperial vessels typically win racing event, and we do not want to confuse people into thinking that this event is a race.
We also don't want the passengers scared into thinking they might end up as slaves.

So many variables - this should ensure a large spread of "Certification Safety Ratings". +1

But please reconsider the colours used:

Doh! It was copy/pasted from one browser to another...I suppose that had something to do with it. Fixing a.s.a.p.!

edit 1: Pretty sure that it's fixed, but I'm not sure what theme you are using that is a white background, so difficult to check.
edit 2: Ah, it's the official Frontier theme. Definitely fixed. Thanks for pointing that out!

Are the results going to be normalised in some way so we can compare Safety Ratings across classes?

In any case think it would be appropriate to play the Orca card for this event.

That wasn't really possible, at least not in a way that also made it meaningful to differentiate the classes. So I decided to exaggerate those differences instead, giving each class a different Tour Time.

Besides, driving a taxi isn't the same as piloting a party barge, so their certs shouldn't be comparable either! And while some pilots like to specialize, it gives other rac...event participants multiple goals to pursue during the vacation period.

I'll be participating but probably not until the final day as I am AFK until then.

I can do some planning in the mean time...

I'd like to declare my availabilty to escort students around some terrific tourist hotspots, some on the beaten track, some less so.

WARNING: I take no responsibility for any flu like symptoms which some of the male students (females are immune ... ALLEGEDLY) may start to experience following their tour. Students prone to infection are advised to bring their own masks, helmets or hazmat suits (as deemed necessary).

I can now confirm that I'll be piloting a ship in the Taxi Driver class (at least to start with). I haven't decided on a name yet. I've got a few possibles and I've asked my students (who are all excitedly gathered around my ship while I run through some basic rules and safety reg's with them) to vote on their favourite. We won't actually be departing on our first tour until later in the weekend (still awaiting a few parent consent forms to be returned first).

Quick question: are bi-weave shields acceptable?

Absolutely! They're my favorite ship cushions for situations where their weight isn't an issue.

edit: Wait, why wouldn't safety equipment be "acceptable?" Are you asking, because you think this is a race?

I think I can probably manage a road trip to escort some 'students' ...as long as they aren't sick on the upholstery.
CMDR Kliggish
Sidewinder 'Boost fail'
the sheildless penalty looks a little better than for the higher classes so I should be able to fit more students in to terrify. ;)

The shieldless penalties are 50% of the cargo capacity that would fit in the smallest internal slot that could hold shields for each class, including bi-weaves.

soooo .. what are you telling me here .. remember im a thicky artist... I should use shields.. or I shouldn't use shields..? or are you just explaining the basis for the penalty.. I cant work out if your trying to suggest I should use shields.. which goes against any sort of sensible buckyball ideals.
and ive noticed you say I have to have fuel scoop.. whys that?... if its just because .. then fine.. but do I really have to have one? ;)

Just explaining how the penalties were arrived at. :) The choice is yours to: take the penalty or risk an equivalent amount of hull damage.

And yes the fuel scoop is required, since there's no way to distinguish credits spent on fuel versus credits spent on repairs. :) No spending credits.

ok cool I missed that.. no buying fuel . gotcha. I kind of worked out no repairing... I've had a bit of a recce... will try and make a run later.

EDIT:- so ive had 3 runs.. all getting slightly better than each other.. but each one ive got the wrong screenshots.. the last run was great.. managed to get round with 100% hull left. well 4th time lucky tomorrow hopefully, my laptop isnt good.. every drop into station takes 10 seconds.. and everything's on lowest settings. rant... foam... whinge.

EDIT:- so putting in a word thats excrement and rymes with rap.. it changes it to awesome.. as ive used that for a while now , Im annoyed that everything I previously disliked is now going to come across as I like it. im being misrepresented.

My sympathies on the issues. Hang in there!

Just so you know, my tours will be starting in earnest on Monday. In the meantime I've been doing some research on the best places to take these kids. I must say, all these so-called "Tourism" systems that don't have a gift-shop you can actually land at really tick me off.

P.S. I suspect it's unlikely such a thing exists but would a planetary base with landing pads whose economy was listed as "Tourism" be applicable for my tour?
